Came here with my family for dinner on a whim because of their friends suggestion. That evening we decided to order a variety of rolls to share and ramen for the kids vs getting their bento boxes. My overall impression of the rolls were they lacked flavor, was too mayonnaise heavy, and the fish got lost. Their rolls are very standard and straight forward, no frills or unique standouts. I also wanted to give their nigiri a try to make sure I was making a fair comparison. Overall, the quality was a B+, solid in texture and flavor but lacked the silky mouth feel one comes to expect with higher grade fish. Service was good, prompt and food came out fast. The price point was definitely reasonable especially for a family to go out and eat. I believe it ended up being around $ 80 for everything we got(6 rolls, 5 smaller rolls, karaage, ramen) + tax and tip. Overall Thoughts Family friendly in terms of cost, seating and portions but quality and flavors are lacking in certain aspects

This could be such a great spot. First off, the hostess either didn’t understand us when we said three or she just couldn’t hear. She repeated three, three times like we may change our mind and say two or four. We were seated at a very sticky table and given a nice pot of tea. We ordered a couple rolls of sushi as a appetizer, two of us ordered the combo dinner and one ordered the charashi. The dinners came before the two rolls of sushi. The charashi never came. We tried flagging down a waitress, they are few and far between. When we got her attention she was surprised the charashi never came. Shouldn’t she had been on top of that? Wasn’t she our waitress? I understand why everyone gets their own pot of tea… because they are not very attentive. Once your seated, this staff operates without any rhyme or reason, no timing of dishes so everyone can eat together. Appetizers come after you eat and God forbid you order a dinner and others order sushi, like us. The combo dinners were brought soup and salad and then 15 minutes later the soup for our sushi diner came. Bizarre! It seemed like we were there forever. We all ate at different times. Then we had to ask for the check. We paid and were waiting for our change and they brought us another bill! We had to tell them that we already paid but the waitress never brought back or $ 46.00 change. Sheesh!

It was within walking distance of my hotel do I went. Pretty basic place with nice people who try. Nothing special but good enough for a meal.

Ain’t a DAMN thing sunny about this place! They can’t seem to get their head out their out their ass long enough to run an effective business. 1) when you arrive they will seat you pretty quickly. Ok that’s a plus. 2) when you’re seated, no one will come and take your order unless you ask them to. That sucks. 3) a box order takes a bit longer. That sucks. 4) you order a total of «4» rolls & sushi…45 minutes later only 3 orders come out. 10 – 15 min apart. I totally get it. You got a big party. Guess what, as a business you gotta be ready for«big» parties, without compromising the service towards your other patrons. Otherwise, your service just sucks! Overall the food here is average. You’ll find other restaurants in Millbrae worth your $. This place is just convenient. But not one I would recommend for anyone to go out their way for. If the food was good and service sucked I’d still come back. But they carry a double negative in both arenas — so I would not return nor recommend this place. Waste of $ waste of time.

My buddy Eli loves to come here, and I’m beginning to doubt both his basketball skills and his taste in food. The lunch bento is cheap, hence the 3 stars but it’s not worth a 4 or 5 star Its just average. Except for the portions, which are smaller than average. He usually gets the katsu and I get the beef teriyaki bento. Always looks like a kids meal. But for the price, under $ 10.00 per person, I guess it’s not that bad.

I appreciate that they give me a teapot despite being alone. :) I prefer their San Bruno counterpart, but that one is always packed(as it is smaller) but I still love this anyway! Food is really good, they have one of the best tasting beef terriyaki in town! The service is okay. Not exceptional, but acceptable. They’re not too quick, but not too slow either. One sad thing about Sunny Sushi is that I feel like there isn’t enough portions per serving even for their dinner combo(or maybe I just love their food so much that nothing goes to waste and I actually beg for more). Ultimately, I will recommend this place to a friend. But be aware that this is not right off of the main road of El Camino Real, you’re gonna have to go around an access road to get here.

Driving to this restaurant actually proved to be a bit tricky because it’s situated not right on El Camino Real but on the bit of parallel street that you access one block south of Millbrae Ave. There’s no access to this restaurant at the intersection of El Camino and Millbrae; you’d have to turn back and go around in that case. In fact, even the front entrance does not face El Camino but the parking lot in the back instead. Once you make it in there, service is pretty friendly. The deluxe chirashi priced at $ 23.95($ 8 more than the regular one) proved pretty worthy because, at least for my order, they included a raw sweet shrimp(amaebi), a sea urchin(uni), and a giant clam(mirugai). I think those three pieces combined makes the extra $ 8 worth it(even though I don’t know what would have been in the regular chirashi). Also they did include quite a few pieces of hamachi, and I agree with the other reviewers in that the hamachi here is excellent. For those who are fans of tatami-style seating, they have it here. However, it looks like they partly take away from the experience by putting actual chairs around the tatami tables. I’ll be generous and say this place merits 3.5+ plus based on my Labor Day dinner visit, and will round up to four stars.

I have been looking for a good sushi place by my work and finally have found one. Service is fast, friendly, and food is yummy. So far I have tried their salmon teriyaki, ebi roll and dragon roll. Everything was really good especially the ebi roll and teriyaki. Only done take-out but the restaurant itself it super cute and would definitely love to dine-in one day.

Delicious chirashi here! The regular size is $ 15 and they do have a deluxe version for about $ 5 more. The fish is really fresh… so buttery and melt in your mouth. The nabeyaki udon here is standard– however the deep fried shrimp was extremely fluffy! Also tried the ice mountain roll($ 8) , which is a standard tuna roll topped with imitation crab and fish roe. Good deal and great portion. And WOW, the seafood yoesenbe was brimming with mussels, octopus, tofu, etc( ). It’s quite the presentation for a soup. The beef sukiyaki comes in a very thick broth, so don’t drink it, but it accompanies the beef very nicely. Tender pieces. I love the fresh quality of food here and the polite, quick service.

Ordered takeout from here tonight since S and I just started moving into our new apartment today, and had no food. The person who answered the phone was friendly, and gave me an estimated time that was right on the money. When I got there, the restaurant was decently busy for a Saturday night. My order had just finished being boxed up, and I was ready to go within 5 minutes of being there. I ordered the gyoza, a philadelphia roll, and a spicy tuna roll — kinda the basics to see what this place was about. And because I just wanted those things… Anyhoo — the gyoza was alright. More like Chinese potstickers than gyoza. Although there were six in my order — which I was not expecting. The spicy tuna roll was good — not too spicy, and overall well seasoned rice. The philly roll was also decent. I didn’t order anything special, so I didn’t get anything special. It seems like a dependable joint for basic sushi. I wouldn’t go here expecting omakase, mouth-wateringly(is that a word?) fresh sashimi by any means.

Very good value. They have $ 13.95 set dinners where they allow you to choose 2 items from a very long list of foods(chicken/beef/salmon teriyaki, katsu, sushi, sashimi, etc) that comes with rice, salad, and miso soup. The portions are huge — my mom had the beef and salmon teriyaki and the portion of each meat was a deal even at regular price. I had the deluxe chirashi which had tons of raw fish — including uni! The quality wasn’t amazing, but the fish was fresh and the cuts were thick. They don’t seem to do much business at night so I’m not sure how long this place is going to be around. I’ll like to come back though!

Great sushi, great prices, I will for sure be returning! You are greeted with tea and cold edamame. Sushi come out quickly. My only disappointment was the lack of spice in the spicy rolls that I ordered.

I’ve only been here twice with my friend and I think it’s a pretty decent and affordable place for Japanese food. On our last visit, we ordered hamachi rolls, the Lion King roll, Tiger roll, and the Honey Crunch roll. The Lion King roll was my favorite even though it was smaller than I’ve had at other sushi restaurants. The other rolls were good too. Everything tasted fresh. The service is friendly. But, can go slightly downhill when they get really busy. We were there on a Friday night and it was pretty packed. The décor is nice. They have traditional Japanese seating towards the back, which is pretty cool. The atmosphere is average. It was slightly louder the last time we went because there was a little kid that was being unruly. But, besides that, I’ve never had a problem with the noise level. Overall, I’d say consider coming here if you live in the area and want pretty good sushi at an affordable price. There’s also no need to worry about parking because they have their own private lot.

Way before I joined the X-men, because of my freakishly Adamantium skeleton and mutant healing abilities and my dynamic sense for the weapon X program… I was in Japan, Ummm well Sorta was in MILLBRAE! At this anxiously STYLIZED Japanese restaurant. called«Sunny Sushi» I love the décor and feel of this place. They try to make it traditional Japanese style, and In a modern way it works! Although they have weird unqiue Japanese seating, in which you have to see to believe… I noticed how limited the space in the dining area was, and how noisy it can get because of the space you can hear the person besides you, talking about thier boyfriend experiences. Meh :/ The place is hospitable for the price you pay. They offer warm towels to clean your hands/face. which kinda felt like a spa when I did that, and a complementary«Edaname for your mami’s body. (heh heh I rhymed) and a pot of hot green tea. The sushi rolls are decent in price although rolls are on the small side, but nice arrangement of sushi rolls. I can tell they took their time crafting the sushi so it wasn’t sloppy. The sashimi combo looked good, But I ordered this dinner special combo which came with terayaki and some undercooked rice, the terayaki was Delicious as well as the the tempura. The combo included a salad and miso soup, the miso soup, I can tell«instant» prepackaged just add water, Miso anywhere! Ha! I was a little upset when it seemed like our Waiter was so quick to take away my plate and I kinda had the feeling like they wanted us out, but it’s okay. The rolls my friends Ordered were the Dragon Roll, Tiger Roll, and Some other one I couldn’t remember. One thing I always order since it’s my favorite roll is the Lion King. *sigh* I’ve had this roll many times this time it seemed to disappoint, simply because of the size and I understand the sauce maybe be a little different. I’d give this 3 stars. I’ve had better sushi. Yes, I repeat I’ve had BETTERSUSHI. and ASFARASCUSTOMERSERVICE, It was average, if I was in the area, I wouldn’t be so quick to give this place a try… Because of it’s location I often wonder how it gets buisness… I’m curious, seriously, I am… but I’m glad I choose this over the Wendys which is basically Next door. ;)

Went to lunch here last week. It was pleasant. Menus are easy to read. Photos are always more enticing. Good number of selections; not too overwhelming. Price points are good for the portions you receive. Service is on point and friendly. Space is good in size and is clean. Parking is a private lot. Will definitely be back!

Came here during the Saturday of Mother’s Day. It wasn’t busy at all, and there were empty tables, yet the waiters/waitresses gave us grief for wanting to sit at the bigger table. We finally got it, but I had to make a scene which kinda ruined the mood for the rest of the night. The manager later would come by and check up on us from time to time which ended things on a better note. The waiter who gave me trouble must have been new, but seriously. if it’s a holiday weekend and you can afford to give a nicer table, you minus well cause that can only mean a bigger order and bigger tip.

Sunny Sushi has discontinued honoring the sf gate daily deals. found this out when i show it to the waitress. no biggie. eats: –lunch chirashi special(9.95) came«spicy», with minichucks of tamago, hamachi, tuna, tako, and salmon on top of ½ vinegared rice. sashimi ok, rice no –miso soup filled with msg, tofu bits and wakame. –chicken kaarange(5.5) lite brownish chucks of fried skin-on chicken. not dry but definitey flavorless no chicken taste, no additive taste, no greasy taste. huh? temaki: –2 stars since i was orphaned after the food came. –busboy walked to my table at least 6 times, wouldn’t pick up almost-empty dishes –had to asked for check after i waited awhile –went to cashier station after no one picked up $$ after a few minutes. –waitress didn’t inquire whether a wanted lunch chirashi, just assumed i wanted regular chirashi. –lots of parking in back –doubt i will return.

FOOD: We ordered: — Lunch Special B(spicy salmon roll, a shrimp tempura roll, and a california roll) — ***Tiger Roll(smokey flavored california roll w/ebi & unagi) — Deep-fried California Roll — Miso soups Food was smaller than anticipated, but was pretty delicious. The shrimp tempura roll tasted good, but the lettuce filler in the roll was kind of strange. We stuck to some basics when ordering sushi, so I can’t really say how good the specialty rolls are. The Tiger roll and the spicy tuna roll were my favorite. The rest tasted a little bit bland so I asked for a side of eel sauce and some of my beloved Sriracha Sauce :) Side note, the tea was almost as clear as water – needs more steeping! —– SERVICE: Subpar. We were ignored pretty much the whole time. The rest of the wait staff seemed pretty attendant, I guess ours was just too busy or something. Anyway it took forever to get everything so I just asked other waiters and waitressed when I needed a water/tea refill and such. They all were very nice though. —– OVERALL: I’ve been curious to try it since it opened a few months ago since until very recently it was the highest rated Japanese restaurant in Millbrae at 4 stars. Since then it has been bumped down to 3.5, and I have to agree with the lowered score. Its good, but nothing spectacular. The ambiance isn’t anything out of the ordinary, a traditional nicely decorated Japanese restaurant. Service needs to improve, prices were decent for lunch, wouldn’t wanna go here for dinner though. Would have gave it a 4 if the service wasn’t as bad. I’ll go again though and see if that same thing happens. Overall a decent place for some pretty good sushi!

I’m already a fan of the Sunny Sushi in San Bruno, so I was happy to see they expanded and opened a much bigger and better place in Millbrae. And apparently, other people are too! We tried to go to the San Bruno one, but it was full, so we took the short drive to the Millbrae one. It was easy to get a table, but boy were those sushi chefs hustling. My kids and I sat at the sushi bar and watched roll after roll get dished out. We were able to order quickly, but had to wait a bit longer than usual because they were so busy. And rightfully so — their rolls are creative and delicious. I have to remember to always order one roll less because I get so excited looking at their menu, I end up eating with my eyes and ordering too much every time. So four rolls later(dragon roll, tiger roll, rock and roll, and shiitake with avocado roll) between me and my daughter, along with tempura udon for my son, and we were all ready to call it a night and fall asleep in a comforting food coma. So happy for the owners and staff, who are most gracious and quick to serve you. I will definitely add this to my restaurant rotation. Only I fear they may get so popular, it will be hard to get in to either place. We will see.

Sunny sushi sure brighten up my day! Haha get it? Okay, so I walked into sunny sushi since I’ve been anticipating it’s opening and I finally got to try it out! from what I understand it only opened 2 weeks ago, and the service was aweeesome. I was greeted with a friendly smile, hot towels for my hands and an aesthetically pleasing menu. We started with some hot sake(which wasn’t warm like other places but HOT) and we went straight for the sushi rolls. They were alll so fresh and delicious! We had: Dynamite roll Sunny roll Tiger roll Green tea ice cream for dessert I’ve never had such fresh tuna and salmon in the bay area! I actually asked the hostess and she mentioned that the owner wakes up every day at 6am to get the freshest selection from the fish market! That’s a reason in itself to come back here. Overall i was not dissapointed, and I’ll definetely come back for my sushi fix.
