Having been coming to this place for years… and just came back today with a HORRIBLE experience. Dont know what changed… either they arw cost cutting or the cook was having an offday… or the regular lady manager was not on duty today… but both our dishes were horrible today. Veg kung pao chicken: i dont eat meat but LOVE this dish at this restaurant. Unfortunately it was horrible today. Not cooked at all and very chwey… and on top of that the manager on floor had the balls to tell us that the dish was spoiled because we sent it back. Well… why did we have to send it back? We have NEVER sent it back all these years! Veg Kee mao: HORRIBLE… there were hardly any noodles in there… we asked to replace the meat with tofu… instead they replaced it with full size boiled potatoes. Didnt even bother to get it fixed even after we complained. We have been coming to this place for years but todays experience was very bad. If it continues, we might have to start going back to Penang garden on the ranch. Though, a big shoutout to my favourite server… he is a pleasure to talk to and always has a smile on his face. There is only so much he can do if the cook screws up! I will be going back in there… not for dinner… but to talk to the regular manager… to voice my discontent. Hopefully, she will do something to fix it. I will be very saddened if this restaurant continues like this and i have to vote with my wallet and stop going there. Please…please…fix it and learn to listen to your longtime faithful customers! Peace!

The location in Cupertino is much better. We ordered the Seafood Sarang, Hokkien Mi, and Sizzling Beef. We would have ordered others, but every dish we asked for, they were missing ingredients for it. So on repeat, we heard, «Sorry, we don’t have that today». This was probably the faster dinner for us in a while. Why fast? Because the food came out about 5 minutes after we ordered it. –The Seafood Sarang was underwhelming. It was cold. You can tell that the taro nest was pre-made and sitting there to be filled. –The Sizzling beef came out right after. It’s was decent, but nothing special. –Hokkien Mi was ok. Good for toddlers. Nothing to see here folks… look for another place.

I have been to this place 3 – 4 times so far. This is not my favorite Malaysian restaurant but I wouldn’t mind to go there if someone picks it for lunch. At the last visit we ordered Roti Canai — Their fried it too much that all the pieces were breaking into powder at the touch itself. That is not the way to make Roti. Chicken Satay — Good, it was flavorful. Thai Iced tea — They premixed it and it was just okay. Kari leaf chicken — Very different than I expect. It tasted okay but I wouldn’t order it again Singaporean chilli prawns — Prawns were good but the sauce was out of a bottle. Maysian Fried Rice — Good Mango Juice — Out of a box

Was going to try Banana Leaf but line was SUPER long. Came here, pretty packed, but able to get a table. Ordered their sizzling beef, roti, and their mouse tail noodle. All very good. Reminded me of thai food, but less sweet and spicy. Pretty crowded place at dinner. Mix of couples and families that eat here. Pretty casual place. Very quick service. Pricing is reasonable for what you get. Next time, I would like to try their bird’s nest!

Dinner on a Wednesday night was not too busy so service was a little slow. My friend and I ended up ordering too much food. We ordered 2 appetizers and 2 entrees: — Roti Canai — Poh Piah(3 rolls) — Beef Rendang — Mee Goreng — side of steamed rice Since we sat near the front door, it was pretty cold every time the door opened that our food got cold fast. I would prefer to sit farther from the door next time. Everything tasted good except I would skip the Poh Piah which was just a steamed roll with vegetables. Overall, decent Malaysian food, but I’ve had better.

I get my Nasi Lemak from here and my Seafood Laksa from Mango Garden. Given its one of the only malaysian restaurants, it’s good by default. The one thing that would make it better is if they provided some sambal with every dish, regardless of what is ordered. It’s a staple of every malaysian meal and really makes the dish tastes better. Layang Layang makes fantastic sambal, and it is one of the many perks of this restaurant. Recommended dishes: Nasi Goreng and Nasi Lemak; ask for sambal and lots of rice!

We came here because of all the Unilocal reviews. It was really below average. First of all we told the waiter that it’s our first time and wanted some recommendation, he really was not much help. I asked him what do you think is better? His answer was everyone taste varies, it depends. I guess that’s a safe answer but it doesn’t help a patron trying to make a decision. From the dishes we ordered, I guess we ordered all the wrong ones! We ordered: — Roti with curry sauce — don’t know how you can go wrong with this, it was just average for $ 3.25. — Coffee spare ribs — it was just pure bitter, not sure if that’s how it is supposed to taste, if it is do not order it — it was awful! — Pineapple fried rice — they should call it ketchup fried rice because that all it is — yuck! How can you mess up fried rice? — Green chicken curry — it was just pure spicy with no flavor, go figured — a bland spicy curry. This is by far the worst curry we have ever had! — Princess Tofu — the tofu was average, the sauce is basically oyster sauce from a bottle, what is so special about it? How did this place get over 600 reviews with 4 stars??? If we ordered all the wrong dishes, then our waiter sucks!

It was alright here. This is my first time getting Malaysian food, and it was a nice location for super big groups. I wasn’t really mind blown by anything, though. I split a chicken with pineapple as well as a noodle soup with two of my friends. The chicken came in mini nuggets and it was cute that it was arranged in an actual, hollowed out pineapple, but the meat seemed sorta dry to me. The service was fine, but it’s not likely that I would try this place again.

After a morning of running errands, our bellies protested at the lack of food and so we decided to go for something simple and hopefully tasty. Layang Layang was in the area and because I remembered reading good reviews about it, I chose this place for some much needed food with my hubby.(I also just got a kick out of saying the name so many times. LOL) Layang Layang is located in a large Plaza with a bunch of other eating restaurants. Honestly, you can choose whatever cuisine you like because on every corner there was something different. When we walked into Layang Layang, we were pleasantly surprised at how big and beautiful the place was. Decorated as if we were right in Malaysia, there were hut roofs, colorful green and red walls, warm lighting, and beautiful art pieces. I always take it as a good sign when restaurants put thought into their decorations because hopefully it means the same thought was put into their food. A waiter then kindly showed us to a roomy table and took our order for drinks. There were lots of people working that day so we didn’t just have one waiter for the whole meal. However, every single person was very courteous and friendly. For our food we ordered two entrées to share: Sarang Seafood and Belacan Pearl Mee, a fried noodle dish. The Sarang was the most interesting dish with stir fried vegetables and seafood served in a crispy taro pastry bowl. The noodle dish, also known as Mouse Tail from the menu, certainly earned its name since the noodles did indeed look like the tails of those critters. Taste-wise, my hubby and I greatly enjoyed both. The taro pastry was flaky and crisp, but not too oily like we would expect. The presentation was beautiful with the colorful vegetables and peppers sitting on top. Of course, it’s a very filling dish so definitely order that to share. As for the Belacan, the noodles were thick and short, but coated in a thick Belacan sauce. The chicken was tender and the shrimp had a good bite to them. Even the bean sprouts were flavored well. It also came with a side of spicy sauce, but it was way too hot for the both of us. Prices are very cheap here, so that’s an added bonus. All in all, delicious food and a great looking restaurant equals a new lunch spot for my hubby and I in the future! Layang Layang had a lot more options than the two we ordered and with such a good lunch, we will definitely come back for more.

3.5÷5 Layang Layang, I have not ever noticed you in that plaza with the other restaurants.(Jang Su Jang, Tofu House, etc.) Perhaps it’s the big fat neon sign like Paris Baguette, that you’re missing. Or perhaps it’s just me always eating Korean food 24⁄7. I am a thirsty woman(dirty joke insert here). And I really appreciate restaurants that automatically notice my thirst and refill my waters for me without asking. So brownie points there. As for the food… Questionable. The princess tofu was surprisingly my favorite out all the other ones. And don’t be ashamed to order it because of the name! Other dishes, Sarang Seafood was eh and so was the noodle dish. All in all, I would come back here definitely for the princess tofu.

This is a great alternative to Banana Leaf if you’re in Milpitas. We’ve stopped going to BL because dining in always has a long wait, and the parking lot is always packed so even to-go orders are a pain. What we like: Roti Canai– Flaky, thin, and yummy! Must get this one! Mee Goreng– I like that they make it spicy with spices rather than dousing it in red hot sauce. The noodles are a little on the soft side but are still good. We always order this dish. Sizzling Fish– M likes this dish a lot. It’s a little sweet and has a tiny bit of spice. It’s similar in execution like the spicy garlic sauce fish at Sala Thai. Here they have a black bean sauce. You can also order it with a kum huong sauce but I don’t know what that is. Service is friendly and quick. The food comes out fast and hot. It’s a plus in my book!

it’s been years since I’ve gone to the Layang Layang in Cupertino. that one is pretty good tho kinda small. this one in milpitas is so much bigger n the waiters n busboys r very attentive. they cleared the dishes right after we all cleaned it.(that’s pretty damn rare for Asian places.) we went early to avoid the dinner rush. pretty surprised it’s just as good as the original one in Cupertino. I would go again just cuz it’s close to my parent’s home n it’s bigger so much easier to get a table. we ordered the following dishes: roti canai: this is always a great app to order. very crispy n the sauce is the right amount of spicyness for me(my preferred spice level is light to medium.) if Malaysian restaurants don’t do this right, then they really shouldn’t b in business. seafood tom yam soup: the sourness of their soup is good. not too sour that it’s too much for me. there is a good amount of shrimps, squid, veggies in it. we ordered the small size which is supposed to b for 2 ppl but it is still enough for 4 ppl to have a bowl each n there’s still some left.(sometimes I feel that Asian restaurants tell u the smaller size dish is too small for a group of 4 cuz they just want u to order the higher priced one…) coconut prawns: omg. this dish is so good! ok, I totally love my shrimps n prawns tho. even tho this costs over $ 15, I would order this dish again n again. they don’t take off the shell but it’s not hard to get them off. there’s a mound of coconut in the middle but it’s covering a few pieces of lettuce. I’m not really sure they go with the prawns well but hey, it’s like a hidden extra salad! clay pot princess tofu: this dish was ordered for my mom cuz she is totally into clay pot dishes. the tofu r under the shrimps, squids n veggies. very flavorful n totally goes well with plain rice. coffee spareribs: this dish is something u would probably find in a Cantonese style café. i could totally taste the coffee but it’s actually a sweeter version of salt n pepper pork chop cuz of the sauce. he didn’t like it cuz it was sweet.(he thinks spareribs should b salty than sweet.) I found it ok.

I had been meaning to try Layang Layang for years but never took the chance to. My boyfriend and I finally took a chance and tried this place. It was fantastic! The restaurant is very casual and ordinary but the staff is extremely friendly and tentative. Walking into the restaurant, you wouldn’t be too amazed or expect the food to be either. But you’re soooooo wrong! We ordered the chicken satay, sizzling beef, green curry with chicken, and fried ice cream. Chicken Satay — Amazingly flavorful, very juicy, and I would definitely recommend this to anyone. Sizzling Beef — Another flavorful dish that comes out on a hot sizzling plate. It is very saucy! The beef tasted like good quality beef and it was mixed with bell peppers and onions. Green Curry Chicken — On the thicker side of curry but it’s ever so good. It has a kick of spice but nothing that would cause alarm for the people who can’t handle spice. The chicken was juicy and was cooked well with the curry. This curry has green beans, eggplant, onions, tofu, bell peppers, taro, and potatoes. Fried Ice Cream — They only have vanilla so that was a bit disappointing but the fried ice cream was still delicious. This dish is served with lots of powdered sugar and some strawberry jam which made the ordinary fried vanilla ice cream come to life. For those who search for heat and are not afraid of spicy goodness, make sure to ask for their chili paste! It’s not so much of a paste but it’s very spicy. The waiter even said, «be ware» before I tried it lol. I loved it and it definitely packs a strong punch but it only enhances all the flavors during our dinner. I will be back for more!

My gf & I had dinner here today & grubbed like two alpha-females! We ordered so much & it was still $ 25 pp! I can’t believe it. We ordered: Cendol — Malaysian drink like Halo halo Coconut juice — straight from the coco nut! Roti — good sauce, but doesn’t keep warm/good & gets cold easily Calamari sticks — watch out for the blazing hot sauce Sarang — fried veg & seafood in a fried taro bowl, signature/hip dish Beef dish — good for meaty, good for sauce lovers We asked for halo halo, but there was a miscommunication & we got a Cendol drink instead. Either they were trying to tell us that they’re out & we clearly didn’t hear them, or they didn’t hear our order — there is a bit of a communication barrier. Cendol tastes really sweet with a texture like milkshake and with red bean. The coconut juice was good too, and it came with an umbrella. The food was OK& good for it’s value.

So flavorful!!! Definitely get the roti kanai appetizer. Princess tofu is phenomenal. Tofu with an egg crust to it. The salmon fish with mango sauce is super! The last dish we got was a yellow curry with lemongrass and corn and noodles. Can’t remember the name, that was okay. The snow desert was so tasty, had cherry and coffee sauce on it. Lychee drink was unique with actual lychees in it. Malaysian Tea is similar to Thai Iced tea but stronger. Minus one star because we came here for my dad’s birthday and they didn’t have complimentary dessert for special occasions. Great, attentive service otherwise and reasonably priced. One appetizer, 3 ontrays, 3 drinks and one dessert was $ 63 before tip.

I have never had Malaysian/Singaporean food before so I went in with an open mind and palette. I truly enjoyed the cuisine here! During dinner time we were seated promptly and given our menus. Although it doesn’t look like it’s very spacious on the outside, it does seat a good amount of people. We decided on some of their most popular dishes. Their most famous appetizer is the Roti Canai. It is the Indian style pancake(homemade of course) and it comes with a curry dipping sauce. The roti itself is flaky and crisp on the outside, but fluffy and thin on the inside. The curry adds another dimension to the flavor. Ask for the spicy sauce and they will bring it to you in a small dipping dish! A little goes a long way because it is spicy! We decided on the Malaysian Fried Rice for a rice dish. It comes with shrimp, chicken, egg, basil and veggies. Although there were a few clumps of rice that were not seasoned, the dish as a whole was delicious. It was not overly salty, and all the protein in the dish was cooked right and tender. Add a little bit of the spicy sauce if you want a kick. One of their popular noodle dishes is the Chow Kueh Teow. It is a stir fry using flat rice noodles, shrimp, squid, bean sprouts, and egg in a soy sauce and chili paste sauce. If you ever have had Chow Fun in Chinese cuisine, it is a little similar to that. The noodles are smaller and thinner, and the Chow Kueh has a bit more of a kick to it. Although the sauce was soy sauce based, it was not overly salty. There is plenty of protein in the dish so no skimping here! Lastly, the princess tofu. The tofu is home made and is fried to a crispy exterior perfection. It comes with an oyster sauce that covers some shrimp, squid, mushroom and veggies. Once again, plenty of shrimp and squid. The tofu is amazing. It is so soft and silky on the inside that it nearly melts in your mouth. It is not too soft that it falls apart. The sauce pairs well with the tofu and does not overpower it in any way. Service was spot on. Anytime you look at a waiter, they will come rushing to you. You don’t even need to wave your hand or call for someone. They are very prompt in refilling your water and are quick to clear empty plates out of the way. Portion size is great. The 3 main dishes and appetizer filled a party of four. Price is also very fair. The bill floated around $ 35 without tip. The only reason why I am taking away a star is because we found a small twisty tie in one of the princess tofus. Yes, it’s not the most appetizing and I really wish I could give them 5 stars, but this mishap can not be ignored. Hopefully the cooks will be more careful. Overall, great place to try new kinds of food. Really liked it all!

We were hankering some pineapple fried rice and well this was the place we picked since it was nearby and well on our way from the Milpitas library for our weekly drop off and pick up. We also decided on getting their roti murtabak as we loved the murtabak back in Singapore and wanted to get something in conjunction with the pineapple fried rice. Layang Layang is in the same plaza as the Milpitas Grocery Outlet, Paris Baguette, Lee’s Sandwich, etc. but it’s more to the right of the Grocery Outlet. Last time we went here they hadn’t expanded to the right side which was surprising which means more space for them. We ordered and they said 10 min and well they were right. It was a quick turnover! ~Pineapple Fried Rice~ It was quite flavorful, but a little oily and a bit over cooked so the rice was a little mushy. There were 3 pieces of shrimp, a few slices of chicken, chunks of pineapple. I kind of wished there were more veggies or more meat. Good thing we got the murtabak cause that had some more meat to balance. ~Murtabak~ The roti was thin and the filling of meat was nicely balanced with the red onions sliced. The curry sauce was so good. I covered my roti and rice all over it. It was a good departure from just plain roti. Overall? Not bad for to-go. Quite quick and hit all the necessary spots but nothing that I would absolutely run out to get again.

I don’t really understand why this place has an overall better rating than Banana Leaf? I thought it was just O.K. We came right when they opened but this place fills up quick! There’s lots of tables inside to accommodate the crowd though. FOOD: – Malaysian ice tea — 4 stars Yuuuumm, tasty! It reminded me of HK-styled milk tea, except not as strong. For only $ 3, I’d say it’s worth trying. It’ll also help quench your thirst from the MSG they put in the food. – Roti canai — 3.5 stars Satisfying! Thin and crispy, paired with the curry sauce, nom nommmm. – Satay chicken — 3.5 stars Chicken was surprisingly tender and grilled just perfectly! The peanut sauce was also delicious. There’s hot sauce too… but warrrrning, it’s HAWWWT. – Chow kueh teow — 2 stars Ordered this off the lunch special menu and it was the disappointment of our meal. The noodles were overcooked and they loaded too much MSG. Overall, I prefer Banana Leaf but I can see why people enjoy this place so much. Their staples are made well and I would return again to try other items! Service was friendly and attentive.
