I ordered cheese curds here last night and got home and opened my marinara and I’m not even sure what I was looking at. Something was in it and it smelled really weird. Did anyone even check this before it was put in my bag? Well, it ruined my appetite whatever it was and I threw out the food. First and last time I will come here. I put a picture up in case anyone wants to know what it looked like.

Had delicious bacon cheese burger tonight and for my daughter a chicken tender basket. The tenders were plump and perfectly cooked. I usually love their fries but tonight not so much, I would suggest they shouldn’t put them in the same bag with the tenders they became soggy. Milkshakes are also a favorite made right in front of you.

Fred’s is a wonderfully established neighborhood drive-in. It is my go-to supper after a grueling day of house projects. I’ve always been surprised at the quantity, deliciousness, and quality of the food. I like everything on the menu, especially the chipotle chicken sandwich and the fish sandwich.

This tiny and quant little shop will completely satisfy. Quick and delicious food, absolutely fantastic malts. Friendly staff. Definitely try it if you’re in the neighborhood.

Let It Go/Let It Go! My young daughters insistence on watching Disney’s Frozen on an endless loop got that song stuck in my head. It also reminded me that I had to write a review for my recent trip to this little joint. Speaking of Frozen and Let It Go, this place should let go of the«Frozen Custard» in its moniker and just be known as «Fred’s Grill». The custard should definitely not be advertised, because quite frankly it’s not good at all. I had a cone of vanilla/chocolate swirl and it was gummy and lumpy in texture. It didn’t have the rich creaminess of some of the better custard joints in the area and it just didn’t taste good. Thank goodness I ordered some lunch as well. That was the saving grace here. They had a very diversified menu, but I went with the simple order of a burger with the works, an order of fries and a drink. The burger was great, the patty was good and the bun was soft, but when I asked for the works I didn’t except a half of bottle of ketchup and a half bottle of mustard on my burger, but even with that I really enjoyed it. The fries were good as well, but they might want to check the levels on the Mountain Dew machine. My drink was pretty syrupy. This was my 666th check in on Unilocal.Does this mean that Frozen Custard will be the death of me? Talk about cost effective here. A burger with the works, fries, a drink and a single cone of frozen custard ran me a little over $ 8. Got to love the prices here. This place is very old school. That means it’s small and it’s takeout only. They have a very small parking lot that was filled up even on the blustery winter day I came in. The streets surrounding it have plenty of areas that have No Parking zones, and don’t even think about parking illegally since this place faces the police station. Expect a walk when you come here. If you’re coming here for custard, forget about it. The food here might earn it a return visit though.

Thirteen years ago we lived down the block from Fred’s. My husband and I had the French dip on a weekly basis, and it was always delicious. Crinkle fries and custard completed this budget meal. Then we moved to Colorado and missed Fred’s very very much. Fast forward to a month ago, when we moved back to Milwaukee, and today when we decided we needed to have Fred’s. First, the roast beef on the French dip is still just as amazing. Tastes exactly the same, and the au jus is also just as delicious. This consistency says that Fred’s is family owned and cares about quality. On the downside, we didn’t love the«roll» the sandwich is on. Mine tasted oily. But I happily stripped my sammich down to beef and cheese and ate it like that. We are POSITIVE the fries used to be crinkle-cut, and they are not anymore. Bummer, but the new version are good enough. Minus a star for the custard. Ordered a hot fudge sundae and the vanilla custard was… grainy. Like the mixture hadn’t completely combined or something. I’m sure it was an off-day, but was disappointed just the same. As we had ordered to-go and brought it home, I wasn’t able to get a replacement or let the folks in the shop know there was a problem.

Great place on the West side/Tosa. But if you’re downtown, forget Sobelmann’s and try Oscar’s on Pierce(1712 W. Pierce St — 1 block north of Natrional)

I’ve driven past Fred’s many times over the years and finally got a chance to visit. I ordered a Chicago dog, a chili dog and an order of fries. The fries were crinkle cut, which is my favorite, so that was a good start. They were crispy and delicious. The Chicago dog was also pretty good, but I wasn’t that impressed with the chili on the chili dog. My test is to try it the chili separately. If I would eat a bowl of it, then I’m a fan. This chili was of the mushy kind, so I wouldn’t order this hot dog again. Fred’s had burgers, other sandwiches and custard. I plan to go back and try some other items on the menu some day. I’ve heard the patty melt is very good. We’ll see.

I saw this ridiculous special on the Food Network(Or the Travel Channel, one of the two) a few months ago about the best burger in Milwaukee. They went to Sobelmans and AJ Bombers to find out which was better. I don’t even know who won. It doesn’t matter. Fred’s is the best burger in Milwaukee. I’m not sure what the special sauce is. Maybe it’s mustard? Or some kind of spicy mayo? Who knows. All that matters is that it is meat ambrosia. I’m shocked that this place doesn’t have more reviews and stars on Unilocal! Do we not have people who Unilocal in this neighborhood? Do you not eat grilled meats? This is a no frills establishment. They don’t even have tables. Get your food and eat in your car. Or go home at eat. Or eat standing on the corner. Whatever, just try on of their burgers and tell me it isn’t better than Kopps, or Oscars, or AJ’s, or whatever. It’s baseball season now and if you, for some misguided reason like the Brewers,(GOCUBS!!!) then this would be the perfect place to stop by on your way to Miller Park. They even have Fried Cauliflower, which is one of my personal favorites but oh-so-hard to find. JUSTGOTOFRED’S.

Every time we go here the food is the same, and it’s delicious! Great prices. Wouldn’t mind if they were open later hours but we will continue to eat here when we are in a hurry. Fast service, hot food, awesome burgers.
