The food was awesome. I’m so full. My ribs were a little over cooked but Dan compensated or bill. The service was great too! I’m definitely coming back. The lemon drop was great too. Oh but wait the collard greens… mmmn come try em for yourself, but do me a favor and save me some. Jenn

This is my second time at Maxies The first time I came everything was awesome. The food, the drinks, the vibe and atmosphere This time i came the drinks and service were very good but the food was just okay *Oysters– they were okay– but not so fresh and large and firm as advertised to me *Tofu chicken wings– innovative but just ok *Pecan crusted fish– with s was on a bed of sweet potato hash and arugula on the side– it was good– but i would have preferred a piece of blackened or grilled fish *Jambalaya– not bad but it had no real spice or kick to it as others i have had *Corn bread– this is very good and so is the honey butter I think it is time to try a new place

We enjoyed our server Justin immensely. He was attentive and very knowledgeable about every dish, every ingredient. Local foods infused with creative and varied regional flavors. Seafood or southern comfort food, regional cheeses, creole or Cajun influences — all were available. Oysters from the East Coast were offered and enjoyed. A great find for weary travelers new to the city.

Solid, solid place anywhere ESPECIALLY in Milwaukee. You almost don’t even remember you’re not down south. Great staff, excellent food. Really a great southern restaurant in the Midwest. Shrimp and grits areas awesome, good corners bread. Rich Mac and cheese. Well done.

My partner and I dined at Maxie’s tonight and we would definitely recommend it. Our waitress was pleasant and attentive. The cornbread was some of the best that I have ever eaten(especially when slathered with their orange honey butter). My partner enjoyed his ribs. I had the trout. It was good, but it was overwhelmed by the sauce and underwhelmed by the slightly underdone sweet potato and fennel hash underneath. We’ll be back!

This place is the bomb. The servers are amazing and so are the bartenders. The chef has worked with me both times I was there to make certain things that were not gluten free, gluten free. I also let the waitor choose my meal last time(thats how much i trust them) and he did great! There cocktails(I personally love the jalepeno margarita) are amazing and their wine list(and prices, just like BKC) are unreal! Some of our favorite things so far have been their fried green tomatoes, trout dish, brisket, even the tofu! Everyone raved about the corn bread that is complimentary, which I could not try. Just a side note, you will ROLL out of this place. The portions are great and the food is amazing, so you can’t stop eating.

This food was amazing! We started with the NOLA grilled oysters and they melted in our mouths. I should have ordered those for dinner too. The cornbread was cold and fell apart very easily but great flavor. My boyfriend had a full rack of the baby back ribs and he ate them ALL! the meat literally fell of the bones and was super tender. They were smoked very well. I had a bowl of the gumbo and a side of the maple-braised collard greens. The gumbo was excellent and a large portion so I am afraid of what the jumbo size would be. The collard greens on the other hand were way too sweet and I did not like the maple flavor. I would also cook mine a little longer so they would not be as tough. Service was great and have no complaints on the drinks. We spent about $ 74 for everything(not including tip). Overall a great meal and will definitely return.

Wow! I can’t believe I’ve eaten at a hundred different places all over the country since my last review and haven’t posted anything in forever. Made plans with my two favorite boys for dinner on Monday night. Decided we’d meet at 6:00 — almost all the tables were full when we got there. Drinks are strong, and everything we tasted off of each others’ plates was delicious. And… it’s close to the house, so will definitely be back.

COST: — Corn Bread(FREE!) — Maxie’s Mighty-Mighty Gumbo(Happy Hour $ 6 Price) — Chicken Po’Boy($ 10.50) — Crab and Corn Chowder($ 7.50) — Corn and Arugula Salad($ 7) — NC Pulled Pork Sandwich($ 11.95) — Jambalaya«Me-Oh-My-A»($ 17.95) — Chicken Fingers Went on a little day trip to Wisconsin with some family and we managed to end up in Milwaukee. Literally Googled and Unilocaled for some places to check out, and Maxie’s was almost always mentioned in very many of them. We decided to check out! The first floor is more of their bar scene with a big, full bar and counters. There are also smaller tables for a more casual dining scene. Their second floor is where they have a smaller albeit still full bar and big giant tables for groups. I liked the ambiance of the second floor even better, and so did my family. They pride themselves as a place good for groups AND kids and upon eating there, I could see why. They have happy hour daily from 4 – 6PM where you’ll see a ton of food options for under $ 6. You also get $ 1 off any alcoholic drink or beer you order. We skipped on the drinks, but ordered a few items off the happy hour and regular menus. Our group enjoyed pretty much everything we ordered. I personally had the pulled pork sandwich and I thought it needed some BBQ sauce. The beans were amazing though! The corn bread is good though I couldn’t tell if they bake/make it in house. I hope so! The prices are fair and everything was served in ginormous portions! My favorite was their jambalaya which was overflowing with tomatoes, toppings and just the right amount of heat for some kick. Definitely recommend this place if you’re around Milwaukee!

Came to this restaurant due to its great ratings. I’m moving to Milwaukee soon and wanted to check out a local place. It was amazing! The atmosphere is really hip and I enjoyed the décor. I had a jalapeño margarita(delicious) and had Cajun fries as an appetizer from the happy hour menu. The fries came with a spicy mayo dipping sauce that I wanted to gulp down(so good). Maxie’s gives you corn bread as well so if you’re not too hungry skip the appetizer and enjoy the cornbread! I ordered the Jambalaya since I saw several people eating it and it looked great. It tasted wonderfully, spicy with a generous amount of shrimp and sausage and a delicious sauce. Big portion sizes too! My husband asked for the brisket and loved it. The service was swift and attentive. Devin was our waitress and had excellent recommendations. Overall loved our experience here and will absolutely return! i

I found Maxie’s with a search for ‘fried chicken’. Imagine my shock when I pulled up in the dark to ‘Maxie’s oyster bar’! I nearly pulled out. Feeling a weariness from my long day I had a ‘why not’ moment and went it. I’m so glad I did. Despite its focus on Seafood Maxie’s has PERFECTED moist fried boneless chicken. The Tasso gravy was an unexpected savory addition. I dipped everything in it. Everything. Except the napkin. And I considered it.

Heard all the buzz on this place. Upstairs restaurant seating much nicer ambiance. Started with the gumbo and arugula salad. Both live up to expectations as well as nice spice. Corn bread is LEGIT! Jambalaya has an incredible kick and sneaks up on you. The brisket and Mac & cheese were well seasoned and not too powerful. Highly recommend this place! Will be back when in town next. MUSTSTOP!

Take me to the South!!! Maxie’s most certainly delivered some Southern charm, hospitality, and most importantly – comfort food. Cajun, Creole, seafood and BBQ… Need I say more!!! On a Monday evening, I was seated instantly, and the wait staff was very prompt and attentive. My meal was started off with a basket of cornbread served with homemade whipped orange butter… Yes, my friend and I devoured two whole baskets. As you may have picked up from my previous reviews, I like my food FIERY, ZIPPY, ZESTY, HOT!(And all other synonyms for spicy, flavorful goodness). Maxie’s flavors sure do pack a punch! And a kick! I enjoyed the BBQ organic tofu. I found the tanginess of the BBQ to be juuuust right. But the mixed veggies topped with Creole sauce was what sealed the deal for me. AMAZING. Truly food for the soul… I could have been in Louisiana for all I knew. For a side dish, I just had to choose the sweet potato fries(served with chive crème fraîche). It is evident Maxie’s takes their food seriously, as serious as the south does. It was so hard to choose from the many southern favorites they serve up. A quick side note… I was impressed by the selection of vegetarian options! It’s awesome when a restaurant accommodates this population, and I think it adds to the appeal and broadens the type of customers wanting to dine here. Some more attractions Maxie’s offers includes Daily specials, such as mojito-Mondays and chicken-fried Tuesdays… AND happy hour EVERYDAY4 – 6 pm with $ 1 oysters, select starters for just $ 6, and«buck off» all drinks. They also do take out! Sometimes it’s nice to grub out at home, but you’d be missing out on a cool ambience and dining experience, worth eating in for. Maxie’s is a Black Shoe Hospitality restaurant, along with StoryHill BKC(one of my absolute favorites!) and Blue’s Egg(which I’ve been dying to take a spin at for brunch). This restaurant got me sooooo jazzed for my New Orleans trip this summer! I will have to update my review once I can compare it to some authentic dishes. But as far as I’m concerned, this place is top notch, and I’m happy to have this dining option near me. Definitely wanting to get back to experience their famous raw Oyster bar, shrimp and grits, and jambalaya.

My dad was born/raised in Alabama. When I visit my family down there, it’s a matter of mere hours before I pick up the accent. I like to say that I’m half Southern, I use«y’all» often and seriously(despite mocking from the Boyfriend). Then I went to Maxie’s, and it said, «Shut up and eat this fancy-ass Southern food.» Holy heck, y’all. Every single bite here has been insanely delicious. And I have bitten all of the foods I could get my paws on. I force my dinner mates to share, because every item on the menu is that good. The first time I went, I had some mushroom special(WHATISYOURNAME, MUSHROOMSPECIAL), and months later I am still wishing for it again. The tofu wings are fucking top-notch, even people who are hesitant about tofu have liked these. Gumbo? Eat it. Ribs? Eat ‘em. Cocktails? Slurp it up. Pulled pork? You better believe it. Maxie’s is magical. Eat all the food. Take leftovers home to savor. Don’t let your evil genius of a dog open the refrigerate and eat those leftovers. You will cry a lot.(It happened to me, no jokes)

My wife and I dined here over Valentine’s Day weekend and it is truly as good as everyone says it is! We started our first childless«date night, in years, drinking at Foundation and hit Maxie’s at about 5:30pm. I’m not sure if they are normally this busy or because it was the day before Valentine’s Day but at 5:30 they were already on a 1 hour wait. While they don’t take reservations you can call ahead and put your name on the waitlist. I should have done that, but I figured that at 5:30 there wouldn’t be much of a wait. Lesson learned. Because we had had a few at our previous stop, and had another stop after dinner, we opted to not drink although it was a hard choice seeing as they had a bunch of great Southern classic cocktails. Instead we quickly ordered up the«Daily Preserved Platter» which that night included a fabulous Duck Mouse and a wonderful terrine of pork with pistachios. It also included a whole grain mustard and an awesome port wine gelee which my wife didn’t like but I loved. Also on the platter were a couple of different pickled vegetables. Most were really good, although the pickled okra had a bit too much clove in it, which I felt overpowered the rest of the flavors leaving it one dimensional and tasting too much like clove-not one of my favorite flavors. My wife had the Chicken Fried Chicken and I had the Shrimp and Grits, both were awesome, packed full of flavor with just enough heat in the sauce for the Shrimp and Grits to give it a kick. We ended diner with a Bourbon Pecan Pie which my wife and I fought over, it was so good. I wish I can remember our server’s name because he was great. We told him that we were in kind of a rush because we had a show to get to and didn’t anticipate the hour long wait. He was right on top on things and had the timing down perfect. He never made us feel rushed but did make sure that as soon as one course was done the next course was right on its heels and we got out with plenty of time to spare. He also dropped our check a little early but made it very clear that he didn’t want us to feel rushed but knew of our deadline and wanted to make sure that we got out in time. Overall, it was one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in a while. Now that might partially have been due to the numerous Tiki drinks still coursing through my system, but I like to think that Maxie’s just hit it out of the ballpark, and looking at what others have written I do think that they just really know what they are doing.

Maxie’s, Southern Food. That is what it is. For sure. It is hard for me to write this review because like the place. But the time I went there, I ordered wrong. Everything I ordered and my wife ordered was delicious except my clams. I should not have ordered the clams. I like clams but I guess that day I just thought I was in the mood for clams. I guess the clams were good. I would order them again… I think. Yeah. I would order them again. Not as a meal but as an appetizer. Next time I will get the Po Boy… hmmm… now I am in the mood for clams. As for the service, our wait person was just learning and she was very nice and did a great job. It is a crowded place. Very popular. No reservations but if you are on the way there they will put you on the list.

Everything about my dinner at Maxies was excellent! I can’t think of a single issue to report. Seated surprisingly quickly given we showed up at 7pm on a Saturday. Helped that we were only a group of 2. They have call ahead so I would recommend that for future as I’m guessing larger tables had a longer wait(duh…). They also have that cool app that shows how long your wait is. My friend and I both got the specials. I got the Skatewing based on the servers recommendation. ITWASDELIC! Cooked perfectly with some sort of seasoning and gnocchi and spinach. I finished every bite. We also got Oysters to start and they give you cornbread for FREE. I repeat FREECORNBREAD. It was great. I would recommend the Prince Edward Island Oysters. They were the best of the 3 types we tried. Service was great. Ambiance was great. Free street parking was fine(lot was full but I think we had a shorter walk than the lot would have been). Overall excellent experience. Will be back for happy hour $ 1 oysters.

I live less than a mile from Maxie’s and yet I seem to forget it is hidden over there just beyond the freeway. I was out with a friend recently when I was reminded that I should check it out. West Allis area is so desperately in need of decent dining options. Thank God this is here. On a random Wednesday night, this place was PACKED! I called in an order to go and immediately felt the twinge to stay as soon as I walked through the door. We just grabbed some finger food to nibble on while we were wrapping presents and such. Clams and Fried Pickles. The clams were fat and succulent and delicous. The pickles were good… but kind of weird. I may be wrong, but I believe there was cinnamon in the pickle batter and that was off putting. Either that or my pickles were in the same bin as beignets or something. I will definitely be trying again. Maybe not for the pickles though.

AMAZING. That’s all I have to say. Just kidding. So, I ordered the tofu BBQ sandwich with the fries. Omg, those fries are to die for. Anyways, Maxies has a decent amount of options for vegetarians like me. Also, the corn bread that they start you off with is so good! With the orange butter accompanying it, it’s best served warm. It isn’t dry and crumbly as most would think, it’s the perfect density and moisture, I think. :) I’ve only visited on weekends and it’s been around a 45 minute-1 hour wait, and they don’t accept reservations, I’d advise going early or going on a weekday where it wouldn’t be so packed.

We thought we might have to wait because they don’t take reservations for parties less than 8, we only had to wait 10 Minutes! I would definitely come back here next time I’m in town:) the shrimp and grits are a must try as well as the oysters!

Let’s not just call Maxie’s «Southern Comfort Food» — let’s call it «Life Fuel.» Keeping a close proximity to Maxie’s has literally kept me from moving out of Tosa toward downtown. I have not had anything on the menu that I haven’t liked. Their mint juleps are like boozy adult slushies(aka heaven — the pellet ice is ideal for a julep so they do it right). The portions are huge so you get your money’s worth and leave feeling oh so content. The only down side is their lack of reservation — so if you’re planning to go during a «regular» meal time, expect to wait. Is it worth it? Beyond a doubt. Grab a julep at the bar and wait, you won’t be disappointed. There is also space upstairs for larger parties/events, though I’ve never gone up there. Maxie’s downstairs is cozy, lively and full of happy people enjoying good food. It’s perfection. Also, the red fish stickers — grab one on the way out, they’re iconic!

I’m giving it a «4», becasue the overall vibe and the majority of the food we ordered were 4-worthy. My shrimp and grits were only a 3… but we’ll get to that. We started with a delicious pork confit flatbread. The crust was tender in the middle, crisp on the bottom, and the pork confit along with fresh arugula garnish was delicious. The cornbread they brought to the table was slightly sweet and very moist. My friend ordered the fish fry which had yeast-risen batter. It was light, crispy and perfectly greaseless; as were her sweet potato fired. My shrimp and grits however, were disappointing. The grits were really quite tasty, however the shrimp were on the small side(maybe 16 – 20’s) and they were really overcooked. Needless to say, there are many variations of shrimp and grits, however the one at Maxie’s was served in a piquant tomato-based sauce with tasso. I’ve enjoyed the Creole style tomato sauced shrimp & grits in other restaurants much more than the preparation at Maxie’s. Service was spot on, despite a full restaurant. Menu is fairly priced. And if you love oysters they have a buck off oysters between 4 – 6PM Happy Hour(now there’s a concept!)

Went here on a recent business trip to Milwaukee based on the Unilocal reviews. Great local place with character and unbelievable food. The décor and vibe was on point– NOLA style mixed with 60s kitch. My group ordered the NOLA oysters which are grilled with butter and Parmesan cheese — amazing!!! Blew through a dozen in 5 mins. Also got the fried clams which were delicious. I got the braised pork cheeks based on recommendations from the staff and it did not disappoint. The cheeks were fall apart tender; the jus was deeply flavorful and the lemon poppy cake in the bottom sopped up all the wonderful juice. Beer selection was great. Staff was very friendly and attentive. If I lived here I would be a weekly patron. Highly recommend this place!

I’m fan of the Blue’s Egg group. They do food well, and they do food right. Maxie’s is a solid Southern sister in their group. The cornbread is delicious, and that orange butter, oh the orange butter, is fantastic. Some of the food is a bit overpriced, but it is good. Good enough to justify the price? Meh. Service was great. Stopped by on a Saturday night after a movie date and I am very glad we did! We had never been to Maxie’s but immediately knew we were there by all the red fish symbols around, which I appreciate. Walked in and didn’t have a reservation, but it was like 8ish so it didn’t seem to be a problem Amanda, our server was great — I’m not a huge fan of corn bread(so judge me), but she recommended I dip it in the crab/corn chowder and I am SO happy I did! I wasn’t super hungry, but I had the crab/corn chewer + crab cakes and grits, and everything was definitely amazing. The server was super nice and attentive, whatever we needed, she provided. I would absolutely come back again, and plan to, soon!

I’m sorry for all of you 5 and 4 star reviewers out there. Allow me to explain. Maxies southern is an overpriced southern food experience. Having southern roots(Mississippi and Memphis) and and knowing what good southern cuisine taste like, this place didn’t match my expectations of the reviews I read. Let’s just get right to it shall we? Pros: Great Service, Cool Ambiance, Variety of different drinks, Great Cornbread. Cons: The BBQ Ribs should be smoked and rubbed for that real southern cuisine experience and it wasn’t. It was oven baked(not a bad thing) and with very little seasoning or salt, slathered with a sweet BBQ sauce. All I tasted was sauce!!! The baked beans tasted very weird, I don’t know what they put in them, it tasted like seafood stock in my beans, Yuk! And last but not least, my french fries were served cold and tasteless. I really, really, wanted to like my plate, but I didn’t! I felt like my fellow Unilocalers let me down. Hopefully it was a bad day for the kitchen, because I was not happy with my food. My wife’s shrimp and grits were tasty. Huge Shrimp, and cheesy grits with peppers. I’ll give that a 3.5. And my Step –Daughter’s fried shrimp was good, I was sooo envious of everyone else’s food because mine didn’t meet the«Southern Standard» I’m sure the food is decent, just not southern enough for me. Try Mr. Perkins on the north side of MKE. Then tell me how southern the food is, better yet come to my house! ;) I’m sorry 2 stars for me…

Went here for the first time after having always wanted to go. The location is interesting. It’s right off a freeway but the area is still quite active. It’s not loud and it’s quite pleasant. Every few minutes, someone would stroll through, which gave the area some life. We sat on the patio. As a graphic designer, I appreciated the rather large menu being presented as a horizontal placemat that easily fits on the table instead of a gigantic book that you struggle to find room for/covers your entire face as you struggle to open and read it. So many places don’t nail simple things like this that really make a difference. On to the food: everything on the menu looked mouth-watering. It took us some time to decide. As an appetizer, we had the crab cake. It was very good and a perfect starter size. For entrees, I ordered the chicken-fried chicken, collard greens, and mashed potatoes. With a side of grits. My girlfriend had the half rack of baby back ribs and fries. We were very hungry. Now I definitely like soul food, but some minor personal preferences stopped me from loving it. The Tasso sauce on the grits and around my chicken was fine but a little too acidic. I’m not familiar with it or know if it’s a common sauce in southern cooking, but it overpowered any other flavors. And the greens were cooked lightly in maple syrup which I didn’t love, but we’re good all the same. The only other thing was our server. Seemed very unsure of himself and what exactly he wanted to say to people. We witnessed him explain to a table that a menu item they used to stop serving because«it got bad», was now back if they wanted it. Doesn’t sound appetizing to me. Seemed like a nice enough kid, he just needed to be a little more clear and confident. Overall, I enjoyed the food and atmosphere and so did my girlfriend. We will definitely be back for more. I would for sure recommend this to friends.

You ever have those times when you’re done eating, so you put down your fork, lean back in your chair, and out of the corner of your eye, the leftover mac and cheese is smiling, winking, waving at you, so you pick up your fork again, have a tiny bite, and put the fork back down, only to see it still, sitting on that plate looking all gooey and savory and delicious, so you pick up your fork and have another bite… and the next thing you know, you’re in a food coma for the drive home. Yes. Maxie’s has that kind of mac and cheese. The shrimp and grits were very good, but the shrimp to grit ratio was pretty lopsided. I would have preferred a smaller portion with about ½ the grits to work with the shrimp but it’s all good. His NC pulled pork platter was very good, too. I only tried a bit of the pork and it was definitely in the NC style, slightly on the tangy-er side. And we’ve already covered the mac and cheese. Maybe you should go and order just the mac and cheese. I’m thinking about it. We brought back lunch-size portions of our meals. Wednesday night, plenty of open tables and good tunes going. It’s an excellent choice for dishes and flavors you don’t find too often in this area.

Yum! Yum! Yum! Great spot for a group of friends. Everything I had was great. Asparagus salad was delicious. The tomato vinaigrette was spot on. Maple braised collard greens were exactly that. Collard greens with hints of maple. Pork cheeks… hands down amazing. Only reason it didn’t get a 5 star? The pork cheeks which have a beautiful stew/pot roast homey taste come served over grit cakes. Loved the pork. Loved the grit cake. Didn’t love the two of them together.

This place is so, so good, and completely lives up to the hype. There is little better in this life than real good Southern comfort food. The cornbread was delicious, the chicken-fried chicken was delicious, the mashed taters were delicious, EVERYTHINGISDELICIOUS. One nitpick: why oh why can’t the drinks I ordered at the bar just be transferred to the table when our names come up? Having to close out at the bar to walk over to a table is massively inconvenient for all involved.

What!!! I’ve never reviewed Maxie’s? How is that possible? Where do I begin? I could start with their delicious gumbo with tons of great flavor and enough kick to satisfy me or their very meaty wings. Their beef brisket and ribs are great. They use a smoker and offer different styles of ribs, so check the specials. Tuesdays feature some of the best fried chicken in town. They start prepping it at 3AM! That’s why one day per week is it. I love the Shrimp and Grits in Tasso sauce. The shrimp is plump and the tasso sauce is all kinds of savory! Jambalaya! So much jamabalaya I couldn’t finish it, and took leftovers for lunch the next day. It includes chunks of blackened chicken, andouille sausage and large shrimp. Tomatoes are plentiful and so is the heat, one of my favorite dishes on the menu. People rave about their cornbread and Key Lime Pie. I think both are good but do not live up to the hype. There are several places in town with better cornbread and the best Key Lime Pie I’ve had in MKE was at Bosley, but Maxie’s is pretty good. Although I prefer they don’t add so much whipped cream. What I did like, A LOT, was the Bourbon Pecan Chocolate Chip Cookie. That was probably the best cookie I’ve ever had — ever! I find it challenging to converse when the restaurant is a little busy. The place can get loud, as is also the case with Story Hill BKC. I’ve visited Maxie’s on Luni Gras for the specials and had the Turtle Stew. It was great! I never had turtle before, but I like! Besides Luni Gras and Mardi Gras, they also run Kentucky Derby specials, drink specials too, of course. Maxie’s is what started it all for these guys, who also own Blues Egg and Story Hill BKC. I haven’t had a bad meal yet.
