Went for lunch, fun modern 70s bar. The food was great and the service was awesome! I’m a huge fan of sushi so I get excited when I find a great place :)

Great stop for some quality sushi in a popular area. Good beers on tap and a really good sushi selection. The Las Vegas roll is awesome and so were the lettuce wraps. The decoration and atmosphere is cool and they have Bose speakers hanging from the ceiling which offsets the slow/understaffed service. The wait staff was very friendly, but with only two people running the dining room and bar it was pretty slow. Five stars for the sushi and lettuce wraps alone!

Made a delivery order at 7.30PM through Seamless and was told that the food should arrive before 8.50PM. No food came, so I called the restaurant. The lady who picked up said my food won’t be here until 9.30PM(initially said 9.45PM) because they have a different delivery time on their system and their system is not in sync with the Seamless system. I decided to cancel my order. Should’ve believed other bad reviews here.

I ordered online from Shag via DoorDash(which is also a great service, especially when you have a promo code). I got the calamari and lettuce wraps, which were both awesome. I’m fussy about both of those items, and they both exceeded my expectations. I also ordered the Bama and Flip Side rolls. both very good. I would definitely order from here again and recommend it to others. Shag might just be my new favorite sushi spot :)

Again high marks and I was not disappointed. They recently updated their menu and I was a bit worried however the new sushi maki rolls are delicious, beautifully made and generous portions. Bartender made great recommendations, I appreciate that the staff here samples the menu regularly and knows it well! Keep up the good work and sushi lovers should stop by.

Arrived at Shag — love the décor — wonderful lighting — wood paneling on the walls — was hopeful and ready for fun. Although we were one of 3 tables in the place we had to wait almost 15 min before we were acknowledged by the staff… Ordered a few of the rolls — California — Rainbow and Bama and the Mongolian beef — completely disappointed with freshness — flavor and preparation… I feel like I could have gone to Lunds and picked up the same items for 1⁄3 the price with better results… Sorry — this was a complete miss for me… I won’t be back

I had previously reviewed Shag, shortly after their opening, and was less-than-impressed with the quality of the food. I decided, partly due to being lazy and walking across the street from my house and partly because they reached out in an attempt to clarify some points(for which I’m thankful) to give it another try. So I went back, again for happy hour, and enjoyed myself a little bit more. Had a few happy hour rolls(simple but delicious), a few cocktails(well done, tasty and didn’t skimp on the booze) and then two of their premium rolls(excellently plated, tasty and generous portions of fish). I was FAR more impressed this time than last time. It’s a great addition to the North Loop, and certainly offers a wide variety of not only sushi, but hot dishes as well, but if I were to plan to go out for Sushi, in Minneapolis, Shag still wouldn’t be my first choice. That being said, I’ll probably still go back occasionally as their mailer has a good coupon every month, the food is pretty good and the wait/bar staff are quite friendly. I’d probably eat from Shag more often if they had delivery(maybe they do and I don’t know it).

Looks like Tom Dixon lighting, beautiful metallic globes reflecting the raw concrete ceilings. The name made me smile, that’s RUDE! I wouldn’t say that in front of my mum. The wait staff were awesome, I couldn’t tell if they were just really good or I should ask for a date. That’s the sort of ambiguity that I like. The menu’s a bit difficult to navigate, I asked where the Sashimi was and the waiter pointed out the dishes. I asked if wine was in the happy hour menu, it was, though not listed as included. The price felt high for the food, but the décor, ambiance and staff definitely took the place to the next level. I’ll be back for the fish and flirting, most enjoyable…

Arrived at Shag on 5⁄31 about 730pm — great décor — lighting — tables — art — had a cocktail from the specialty list — Old Fashioned and my bud had a Shagarita — mine was good to avg — the Shagarita was very sweet. Had the calamari — it was average — kind of soggy with the predominant seasoning of Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce… Our entries came mine was the Pad Thai — I chose the shrimp for protein — the dish was soggy and had nothing fresh in it — it was so overly spiced that I could not eat it. My friends meal was Spicy Chicken — broccoli and water chestnuts over rice. I could have eaten the same entrée at any Chinese take out joint in the city. I don’t know about the sushi — but I probably won’t be back.

Shag — what a miss. It’s on my block when I’m in MPLS and I wanted to give it a try. Menu is poor; just wanted a standard sushi deluxe which was not on the menu. I asked the sushi chef after waitress was unable to accomplish sushi deluxe mission. Spoke with the chef and let him know that we wanted sushi dinner for 2 people and wanted to spend $ 50. Chef was super friendly and helpful and left the sushi bar feeling confident. Arrive home(it was to go) and it wasn’t enough food for 1. Check the picture posted on their page. Fish quality was good, not East Coast/West Coast good, but a solid middle of the country fish. But the quantity was unacceptable. For $ 19.95 in NYC or Philly I’m stuffed and even the togo plating is well thought out. We were taken for a ride here. The roll was subpar and the chef gave multiples of some sashimi. Some diversity would have been appreciated, as would some nigiri. If you’re looking for a solid $ 50 appetizer, Shag accomplishes that. Don’t waste your time. Go to Masu or if you’re up for a drive, go to Yumi’s. Better cuts of sashimi and better overall experience. Bummed that my local joint is a let down.

Has the potential to be a 4 star someday, but not right now What’s good: — the fish in the sushi was quality — calamari was tasty — good happy hour prices(but couldn’t find HH times anywhere on the menu) — good music(lighthearted throwbacks) What they need to work on: — service was incredibly slow because they only had one guy staffed at the sushi bar — overpriced compared to other places like Wakame and Fujiya

We had a five star experience at Shag. Everything was wonderful and we anticipated a lovely start to our evening. Our plan was to start with a cocktail and a few sushi rolls to share before heading to our dinner restaurant across the street. This is a modern vintage concept renovated lounge /restaurant complete with 70’s style patterned carpet. Think Saturday Night Fever and Austin Powers. Foxxy Cleopatra was there too, on the wall behind me. Bee Gees music was playing. There was nothing I didn’t love about this place! I’m an old soul at 32 years of age, and I’ve always appreciated the music that my parents grew up with. I felt completely at home. Our server was absolutely delightful, explaining all the key menu items for us since it was our first time here. We arrived at 6:30 on a Saturday night and stayed for an hour. I had the Singapore Sling, sis had the Thai Basil Mojito. Both were very good and we would order them again. Water had cucumber slices inside the glass — nice touch! Sushi rolls were good and everything tasted very fresh. They were prepared well and did not fall apart the minute you pick them up. A little pricier than other sushi joints around town, but this is the North Loop and I’m willing to pay extra for quality, ambience and location. Nothing disappointed us, not even the cool bathroom that was 70’s funk. The 5th star is for the unbelievable purple crushed leather chairs. Hilarious and comfortable they were. Love this place!

Great service. Creative plates and dishes served are delicious. I luv shag and they do deserve better ratings. It’s on the pricey side for sushi but service makes up for it.

I unfortunately have to agree with the lack luster reviews. The appetizers(calamari + edamame) and drinks were wonderful though overpriced, however we waited 50 minutes to receive our main meals. When I received my coconut curry,(advertised both online and on the restaurant menu as having potatoes, tomatoes and coconut flakes) it was mixed with peanuts, red peppers and onions– lacking any curry at all, I asked our waitress to ensure I received the correct order. She checked with her manager and then returned to tell me they had changed the recipe and apologized for any inconvenience. She offered for me to order something new, but I did not want to wait another hour for food so I kept my mystery order. It did taste fine(without satisfying my curry craving). Our waitress did not offer to comp my order, disappointing for multiple mistakes in service. My friends got shag roll #1 and orange chicken. The chicken was great, the sushi… Not as much. If you are looking for Thai food, I recommend Roat Osha. For sushi, go to Kiku bistro. Both have excellent happy hours and full bars. I will likely not be returning to this restaurant. Neat concept in a great area! But clearly with a lot of kinks to work out, and not worth it’s price tag.

Excellent experience! As I consider myself a tartar aficionado, I was pleased to taste that Shag offers a delicious and creative tartar that is out of this world. Following that, the fish in the sushi was absolutely tremendous. Some of the best salmon I’ve had around the twin cities. The service was attentive and the drinks did not disappoint.

Been here several times now and although we like the vibe and the sushi is adequate if not pretty good, the drinks are very lacking. Since when does a Manhattan have soda water added? It’s also not advertised in the menu as such. We also tried the Harvey WallTANGer, a creative twist from a Harvey Wallbanger. Unfortunately it tasted like tang with a splash if Orange juice. Good place, bad drinks.

I hate to jump on the bandwagon of unimpressed patrons, but that’s exactly what I was: mostly underwhelmed. Which is too bad because I’m in the neighborhood almost weekly to see live music and getting dinner in advance is always part of the agenda. First things first — the décor is pretty. It’s 70s mod-ish and the atmosphere is fun. However, when was the last time you saw carpet in a restaurant that is newly-opened? I just imagine carpet in a sushi restaurant being a disaster. ISH. The thing that struck me the most about my first trip here on a Friday, is how understaffed the bar was. There were two people working the bar(where we sat to have dinner) and they were trying to crank out drinks for the entire restaurant while effectively juggling the needs of the people sitting at the bar. Did they do a good job? Sometimes. The bartender did his best handle a tipsy princess from the suburbs who wanted to give him suggestions on how to make the drink menu«wayyyyy more authentic». Drunk inflection intentional. Two staff in a busy bar on a Friday night is not nearly enough. Three would be preferable and four would be perfect. I ordered a glass of wine that they had on tap, 1. because I love sauvignon blanc and 2. because I had never had wine on tap before. I asked the bartender what makes it special because it is on tap and she gave me the canned speech about how it helps it breathe and provides for a better mouth feel but then ended the spiel saying that they bought a lot of it and that it’s made cheaper that way. The Costco of wine here isn’t very good, by the way. The food, I have to say, was not very good either. We ordered a light dinner of splitting lettuce wraps and the spicy chicken. The chicken was not spicy and was boring and the lettuce wraps were tasty enough that I ordered them again the next time I was there but they tasted distinctly different. I also tried the Mongolian beef entrée yummy and garlicky and the Singapore noodles with tofu, which was forgettable. What i won’t forget from my second visit is getting an entire glass of water spilled on me by the bartender. I was given a bar towel to clean myself up with, which made my black pants have white fuzzies all over them. She apologized, sort of, but never checked again on us to see if everything was alright including my phone which was part of the damage. It was fine, by the way. My whole experience here was just fine, I would say. But fine doesn’t really entice me to want to come back next time.

The new sushi spot in town. The décor is spot on. feel like Austin powers is going to pop out. Throw on your best bel bottoms, feeling alive tunes and grab a Miso soup, calamari and sushi rolls. Yummmm

It’s WAY too early to really rate this restaurant since they literally just opened, so let’s call this an extremely tentative 3-stars(and that’s only because I have to give it something to write this info). Shag is still figuring itself out, so I will highlight the strong points and offer a few suggestions. + The tartare! EXCELLENT, especially with the guacamole. The tuna was wonderfully seasoned, really enjoyed the quail egg mixed in and the marinated shiitake mushrooms. Id say it’s second to the tartare I had at Nobu, and that shit is legend. + Potstickers were good for potstickers. Good texture, skin, right amount of crispy. The filling(chicken) was also quite nice with a good mix of veggies inside. The sauce was really good. + #3 Shag roll was lovely. I don’t remember all that was in there, but it tasted fresh, was super flavorful, and I loved the combination of textures. The shiso leaf really helped«brightening» it as well. + the service we had was excellent. Super attentive, helpful, and when we went the restaurant was packed, so way to keep cool. + the layer cake. Cream cheese, chocolate, win. — something to work on: the wok items. In my opinion, way too much sauce. I also wonder if maybe the wok wasn’t hot enough when the main ingredients were cooked. Flavors were good, just need a bit of tweaking I’ll definitely be back!
