Fluffy Fresh Donuts

Our school gets these donuts every time their is an event. I have grown so fondly of their texture, taste, and smell that i refuse to eat any other donuts.
Pretty simple. Best donuts i town. Had ‘em all.

For sure this is the best donut shop in Kansas City, and maybe the planet. I don’t usually look for donut shops, but after reading of the review of this place I decided to try it. When I told the owners it was my first time there, they replied «first ones on the house.» They are so nice and friendly I don’t know why anyone would go anywhere else.

You may have gathered from the other reviews that Fluffy Fresh has excellent donuts. And, likely, that they sell out early, and they only take cash. If anything is known of Fluffy Fresh, it is these three facts. You could probably strike up a conversation with someone in a pub in Scotland, mention you live in Mission, and there’s a chance that they’d say, «Oh, isn’t there that donut place there with excellent donuts but they sell out early and they only take cash?» So I’m not imparting any new knowledge here, I realize. But something you may not know – the shop owners are really, really, nice.
I was excited yesterday (Sunday morning) to get there about 9 AM and find they still had donuts left. Yay! Happy day! They only had nine glazed donuts, but I take my triumphs where I can. I’m not usually a huge raised donut fan, preferring cake donuts, but their raised donuts are good enough to make me change my mind on that. (Plus my wife loves raised donuts and isn’t a fan of cake donuts, so, you know, whatever makes my wife happy.) I bought all nine – we took a half-​dozen to friends, lest you think I was a giant pig. I was chatting with the woman who runs the counter, and she gave me a discount because they didn’t have a full dozen for me. Then she offered me free coffee. I mean, they were shutting down right after me, but still, she was very nice and friendly. I’ve also talked with the guy who primarily works in the back – I don’t know if they’re a husband and wife team or just co-​workers, but I like to imagine them as the Mom and Pop of the mom-​and-​pop operation – and he was just as pleasant. I overheard one customer get very rude and belligerent when he found out that he couldn’t use a credit card to pay for his one donut, and Pop, as I now like to call him, handled it without getting angry. (I would have beaten him with a dough paddle, shouting «THERE IS A BIG SIGN RIGHT AS YOU COME IN SAYING CASH ONLY!») So, yeah, warm fuzzy feelings for the place.

I have been going here my whole life, and it has remained as great as my memory serves that entire time. Some of my earliest memories are of getting donut holes with my Mom. The long-​johns are some of the best I have ever had anywhere, ever. Come early because once they are gone they are gone. I wish more places operated like this, letting product dictate business.

Our most favorite donuts anywhere. The tastes and varieties take us back 40+ years when donuts were not machine made, absolutely the best donuts, fixed the old fashion, classical way.

Grandparents have been going here for years and this place is always amazing! It’s a local staple of Mission and I hope they are around for years to come. This business is the definition of small business America. Just your old mom and pop shop that you can never go wrong at.
Tip: Call ahead and pre-​order because once they are out they close. (Just shows you how good these donuts are)

Make sure you order yours the day before and cash or check only. Best kept secret and best all handmade donuts in all of Kansas city bar nun.

They get the full five stars, even though have literally pulled up to the front of the shop, or walked there, in the wee hours, only to see the old school neon sign go tragically dark, and the cardboard «Sorry, out of donuts» sign go up. *cue sad trombone*
Old school. «Fluffy Fresh» doesn’t mean flashy or modern ambience. It doesn’t mean in-​shop seating. It certainly doesn’t mean you can count on there being doughnuts after about 7 a.m. most mornings, and pretty much never after 8. It DOES mean delicious smells, a line of dedicated locals often out the door, and, most importantly, as the name implies, baked goods that are indeed the epitome of «fresh» and «fluffy.»
This is a shop that adds, along with the blocks of low-​slung, chrome-​edged, vintage shops up and down Johnson Drive, a throwback feel to Mission, and one that you don’t find in just every suburban community. The place that is truly mom n’ pop. I talked to a high school wrestler on his way to a meet (maybe the doughnuts helped him make weight?) on a recent Saturday morning, there with his mom, and they’d been stopping in since he was five years old. Fluffy Fresh reminds me of venerable old shops in my rural hometown, from days when chains and convenience stores that have their baked goods trucked hadn’t yet gained serious footing.
They really do subscribe to the old «time to make the doughnuts» adage, and bake through the night for their morning crush. You can order ahead, as well, if you don’t want them to run out of your favorite in their small storefont display cases. My favorite are the cinnamon twists, a glazed braided doughnut that’s actually not super overly cinnamon-​y, just perfectly so. I don’t do cake doughnuts, so can’t speak to those firsthand, but my cake doughnut-​loving husband (that’s just wrong, IMO), gives them two sticky thumbs up. They are inexpensive (better bring cash, though, as that’s all they take), and biting into them reminds you of how NOT fresh most other places’ doughnuts are.

Unexpectedly, the power went off in my office building, so I felt like this was a grand opportunity to try out this donut shop. I rolled in at quarter to 8, and there was legitimately NOTHING in the display cases in front. I had that sinking feeling in my stomach as I decided to wait in line anyway, and ask about any other donuts they might be keeping on the downlow in the back. Luckily, there were three left (obviously –day = made), and they were warm and fluffy fresh. Only the original glazed were left, and ultimately, I prefer a cake-​y style donut, so these really weren’t for me. All in all, worth a visit if you like a fluffy, original glazed (cuz that’s all they may have left — can’t speak for any other type of donut), but this place ain’t got nothing on Donut King.
But additional bonus: 50 cents for a cup of joe in a Styrofoam cup. Can you beat that?

This wonderful little shop has the best donuts, in the entire KC metro area «more likely the entire midwest» hands down, and I have not had any other donuts from any other places that could convince me otherwise yet. If you are looking for nasty factory produced donuts that haven’t been touched by human hands, and are pumped out by the dozen from machines… Then go down the street to nasty Krispy Crème, or Lamars and stay out of my Fluffy Fresh! The two owners get up at midnight, and start making their donuts from SCRATCH for the day ahead, and if you think only two people can make so many donuts then you would be correct. Unless you call ahead you must get there at 6:00 a. m sharp! They will already be almost out of donuts any later than 7:30 a. m thats how good they are! Very friendly place. But get in, get your heavenly donuts and get out! Not any room for sitting and looking out the window, but who needs to when you will immediately want to get back in your car, and start munching on the best donuts around. And again this place hand makes all their donuts! Nothing is massed produced here, and none of it has that fake preservative filled taste that the other guys that are open all day have.

Seriously some of the best donuts in town. Even if you get there late (after 8am) they will probably still have cinnamon twists, which are really all you need. They look huge, but don’t kid yourself and try just eating half — you WILL come back for the rest of it.
If you want a couple dozen donuts and don’t want them to run out of your favorite, call ahead and place your order 24 – 48 hours early. Otherwise, show up by 7:30 and get an assortment of whatever they have left. You won’t be sorry.
I picked up a dozen cake donuts and a dozen assorted (twists, bavarian cream) and the total was only $ 18. Bring cash.
The parking is now diagonal parking in front, so you need to approach heading east to park without turning around.

I’m a Lamar’s girl, but my co-​worker requested Fluffy Fresh for his birthday.
I was warmly greeted and informed there were only glazed left. «Want ‘em all?» And they gave me a friendly discount on the last nine doughnuts only to turn away the elderly couple coming in. «We’ve just sold out!» To top it off? Some free coffee. And the actual doughnuts themselves? Warm, fresh, funnel-​cake like deliciousness. The glaze is super sweet so if you like icing and sugar, you’ll love the glazed doughnuts. I can’t wait to try the other flavors, I just need to get there earlier!!!

Let me preface this by saying I’m no donut guru. I associate donuts with occasional Fridays in an office or those rare mornings that I wake up too early and am out of the house.
My latest donut adventure came on the summer solstice, when I found myself wide awake at 5 a.m. on a Sunday. I figured I should get up and enjoy the longest day of the year and see the streets without any cars on them. After cruising around and getting coffee I found myself at Fluffy Fresh in Mission.
I walked up to see the big «We do NOT accept credit or debit cards» sign… D’oh!
Determined at this point, I run to an ATM and make it back at 6:45. Some dude in front of me literally orders up every good looking donut I could see and skips back to his card leaving me wondering if this is really meant to me or not. The selection was SO paltry and the sun had just come up. I couldn’t believe that they didn’t have more, and I communicated as much to them. At this point, my easy Sunday mornin’ was turning into a one or two star experience.
Then something changed — I’m talking with the woman running the shop who had been in since 2 a.m. and she shows me miles and miles of donuts that are packed and ready to go for Father’s Day. Oh yeah! So it’s not typical for them to be down to their last dozen at 6:45, they’ve just been busting their ass all night to make sure the orders were covered. Makes way more sense.
So I’m thinking three stars at this point, and I grab a single glazed and head out. Sensing my frustration, the owner grabs me a warm one. I tell you what, a warm, glazed Fluffy Fresh donut will make you feel better real fast. Four stars.
I’m not going to hustle back anytime soon, but it’s a good, small-​town feeling donut shop that’s worth going to.

Best donuts in JOCO hands down! I’ve been going there since I worked in the area years ago! Family owned.
Just make sure you get there early!

A simply great doughnut shop!
I’ll start this review by saying I absolutely love donuts. I have tried nearly all of the doughnut shops around, and always try somewhere new as I travel. This is one of the best mom and pop doughnut shops in the states. Period.
I should mention that if you want to try every kind of doughnut here; you’ll need to get here EARLY. They open at 6am on Wednesdays. I showed up at 5:58am, and they were down to about ¹⁄₃ of their donuts left. The owner said customers usually start arriving a little over an hour before the shop opens.
Now down to the important stuff. The donuts! I tried the following:
Glazed — Very good 8.3÷10
Cinnamon Twist — ¹¹⁄₁₀. I’ve seriously never had one this good. Ever.
Fruit cake (Flavor of the day) — 8.9÷10 This was very good for a cake doughnut. Slightly better than Lamar’s pineapple cake doughnut if you are a pineapple fan.
Chocolate Long John — ⁷⁄₁₀ Although good, it was just a normal chocolate LJ.
Maple Long John — ⁸⁄₁₀ The doughnut itself isn’t a knockout, but the icing is phenomenal. Its worth buying this doughnut just for the maple icing!
Raspberry Bismarck — 6.5÷10 This tastes like nearly every other shop’s Bismarck.
Chocolate Iced Bavarian Cream Bismarck — ⁹⁄₁₀ Their Bavarian Cream is one of the best I’ve tasted.
They are very well priced ($ 8 – 9 per assorted dozen depending on selection). I paid $ 10 for a milk, and a custom assorted dozen with five large donuts. Keep in mind they are cash only. Get here early and enjoy this gem in the doughnut world!

Possibly the best donuts in America. They don’t take cards, and the donuts are usually gone by 8 am… so set an alarm and get your ass there… Don’t miss the glazed. Owner Jim is a master and a nice guy too.

I love that this is an unpretentious mom and pop place. The owner is really passionate about serving his customers and dedicated to his business. The donuts here are fresh and not as commercial tasting as Krispy Kreme or Lamar’s.
The glazed donut was fluffy with a crispy sugary exterior, but a little too chewy for my taste. Almost as if it had been fried too long. The plain cake donut took the prize. A slightly crispy exterior that gives way to a fluffy, yet dense center with the perfect balance of sweetness. This is a donut that you want to dunk into your coffee (if you’re into that).
Cash only. $ 8 for a dozen. Call ahead and leave a message to place an order because this place sells out fast.

The perfect mix between overly dry & bready QT/grocery/Lamar’s donuts and cloyingly sweet Krispy Kremes (though I do love me a good enamel-​melting sugar shock donut from Krispy Kreme now and then too).
Everyone is right about getting there early though. Any time after about 7:30am, and you’re stuck with the leftovers. …which is, of course, perfectly fine if you didn’t have your heart set on a specific flavor.
They definitely need to be eaten warm too. Absolutely amazing. But that one post-​lunch leftover in the box will not be nearly as captivating.

Fluffy Fresh reminds me of being a kid. I grew up in a small town where there was a little donut shop for the farmers. No, you don’t see many farmers around Fluffy’s, but it’s the same atmosphere.
It’s kind of a grungy little shop. CASH ONLY. Prices are cheap & product is tasty. Don’t plan on them passing any white glove test, but take it for what it is: a mom & pop shop.
