Jawbone is one of those places that appeals only to a certain contingent of humanity. Jawbone canyon is a wild desert area that runs northwest of CA-14 just south of Red Rock Canyon and the junction of CA-14 and US-395. The canyon is relatively flat and wide with hundreds of miles of dirt trails for the off road enthusiast. A paved road runs about 15 miles into the canyon, where it turns to a dirt road. 4WD helps here, but we’ve ventured out in 2wd with a group and a tow cable(but I don’t recommend it.) At the bottom of the canyon adjacent to the highway, there is a visitor’s center with vending machines and pit toilets. Farther away from the highway, there are numerous turnouts and camping sports, although only plan on staying here if you are prepared for desert life– daytime summer temps can top 110°, and winter nights are below freezing. Plenty of reptilian wildlife makes this place interesting for the road-cruiser or amateur herpetologist, but don’t let Fido out his face into a sidewinder or get whacked in the night by a pack of coyotes. Summer flash floods, off roaders driving too fast, and guys blowing through shotgun ammo round out a few of the major hazards in the area. I’ve visited Jawbone mostly at dusk/night, roadcruising for snakes, geckos, and other critters. It’s a pretty dry place, but animals out here have adapted to the temperature and precipitation extremes better than humans have. Always take water and plan for the unexpected. Cell phones don’t work a lot of the time, so definitely also file your travel plan in the desert back country with friend or family member. All that said, there is a beauty to this area unmatched in the state. For the adventurous, you can trail drive through some fairly pristine areas, and back-road all the way to Red Rock if you know the way or have a good map. The desert isn’t for everyone, but if you enjoy the solitude and the adventure, you can’t beat a moonless night of stars and a sunrise over the rocky horizon that will rejuvenate your soul, and remind you of the way the gods intended us to live.
