We were a small group of 4 people and showed up about a half hour before closing. Ignoring the circumstances, Donald, the proprietor, provided an unbelievable experience for us. It started with a normal tasting, interspersed with scientific tidbits about wine making, and ended on a free vertical tasting of Cabernet Sauvignons along with complete, knowledgeable explanations on terms, tastes, and the varied nuances of their product. He also stayed past closing to ensure we left completely satisfied. Donald was easy to talk to, eloquent, and made you feel welcome to ask any questions you had… unlike some snotty wineries closer to DC. Superb, phenomenal, wish they were closer to us… and their Cab Francs and Sauvs… to die for. This one is MUSTSEE!

I’ve been to many wineries which were bigger but this is one of my favorites. Great and friendly people. Even better prices for the great wine.

A great winery with beautiful grounds. Owners and management were extremely kind and knowledgeable. We learned a lot about their wines and wine in general. My wife finally knows what to look for in a wine shop! Most importantly, their wines are great!

Donald gave a very friendly and informative presentation with generous helpings of several wines for tasting. Our party of four included two who had previous wine tasting experience and two(my wife and myself) for whom this was our first wine tasting. All agreed that the wines were superb and priced reasonably(less than $ 20 per bottle). Highly recommended!

Charming and historic winery on Virginia’s lovely Smith Mountain Lake. Awesome Merlot! The husband and I on a visit to Roanoke decided to check out a few of the local wineries. Upon arrival at the beautiful Hickory Hill Vineyards your immediately transported back to 1920s Virginia South. The house that hosts the winery is a beautifully renovated historical structure from that time period. Inside the doors are small, and the walls are narrow but it opens up to a lovley wooden bar and an atmosphere that is very warm and inviting. It houses some really great wines and a great couple who warmly greeted us on a super cold afternoon on a Saturday in February. Upon arrival we were told a bit of the history of the winery. We were then given a free and generous pouring of some of there wines offerings. My husband and I were particular fond of the 2008 Merlot and Cabernet Savingon. In fact we bought a bottle of each. The wines were not overpriced at under 20 dollars per bottle and were a fantastic value for the quality. We really enjoyed both the property and the winery and highly recommend it.

This was a fun vineyard, and a must at Smith Mountain Lake. Vicky was very friendly, and loved her work. The wines were good, and a great place to go. Would go back again.
