Passing through I had to give the place a shot given so many outstanding reviews. My food experience didn’t match up with nostalgic view of so many locals(past and present). I would also state I only tried the chili dogs… So maybe the root beer is what makes the place special. Greet service for sure, carhops are not that common and these girls are real sweet. As for the Chili on the dog, I would give it a two. Overall I would say 3 stars is as high as I would rate

Been going to Monroe’s Original since I was a kid. Best Hot dogs on the planet. I could eat me about a dozen of these without lookin up and sayin hello. Look forward to going back to Monroe because we always fill up on MO’s before leaving town. I Love the simplicity. Dogs, Root Beer Chips, Cash only! Great business.

My kids have loved coming here since they were little. It’s the traditional style hot dog stand which makes it fun. Their hot dog chili is by far the best in town. Love the root beer in frosted mugs. Car hops are friendly and service is speedy. Must try!

Excellent hot dogs unlike anything you will get outside of Monroe. Their root beer is delicious. And the carhops are always friendly. Like on Facebook to find out when they have deals.

My Wife and I love this place. Her parents are from Monroe and love them too. We stop by when we’re in the area, which isn’t very often. The chili dogs here aren’t your typical Detroit Coney dogs, these are more of a sloppy joe chili dog or something. Just try one, so good.

First time and really enjoyed my experience. Dogs were hot w/killer homemade chili sauces. Root Beer fresh, homemade in cold frosty mugs! Wow! Great root beer! Oh and Trisha waited on us and was so pleasant and attentive. She was wonderful! I’ll be back next time I am in Monroe.

Great chili dogs! I came here the day before leaving Michigan and was so glad that I did. Growing up in NY, it was all about Nathan’s(good in it’s own way), but the hot dogs here are really good. They have a certain snap and taste great. The chili was great too. Get everything on it, perfect!

My son came to Monroe from Boston and he would not stop talking about the Drive-In until we got in the car and went over… My Grandson’s first drive-in experience. Excellent! Just as I remembered it from the 70’s

I’m normally not big on hot dogs, but the ones here are a huge exception! Their hot dogs are amazing, and the root beer in a glass mug plus the Better Made chips is a nice touch. I don’t even usually get chili on them(although my husband does and raves about it), but even plain they taste great. Fast service too!

One of the best hot dogs in the metro Detroit area. Their chili sauce is different from many coney restaurants. It has a sweetness too it that’s to die for and begs you to ask for another one. I would definitely recommend stopping in, its a must have if you’re in Monroe.

What a great find — thanks Unilocal!!!We had lunch here on our way back home from Sandusky and it was great! Loved the old-fashioned vibe, the simple menu and the delicious food(kids and husband loved the root beer too). We will definitely be back.

Best chili/coney dog in the world for my $. Perfectly simple marriage of hot dog, bun, and toppings. Onions do not overpower chili. I could eat an infinite number of these.

Retro, old-timey hot dog joint. No speakers; the car hop come to your car to take your order, and when you are ready to go, you start up the car and she gets your tray. The root beer is better than A & W’s and they serve it in a glass mug, which is a treat. The coneys are sloppy but good. I love the Better Made chips! If you bring the kiddies, they can have a baby root beer glass! They have a special in the paper that gets you four coney’s, two bags of Better Made Chips, and two large root beers for $ 10! Look for it!

I enjoy the 50s style drive-in experience, and if I was born here in Monroe, I’d probably like their chili dogs… but as with Vince’s, the chili is quite unlike typical Detroit(or Flint) chili, and is heavily laden with tomato. OK, but not what I think of when I want a chili dog. I guess I’m thinking Coney dog, in the more traditional sense… like a Nathan’s, a National, or a Lafayette’s Coney dog. The rootbeer is great, as is the car-hop service. A true bit of Americana that is getting harder and harder to find.

Conies anyone? We ordered conies for our family and ended up ordering again before we left. Delicious rootbeer!!!

If you are you searching for the best tasting chili dog? This is the place. I have been going here since I was little girl. My grandma’s mom brought her here… and I bring my kids. It’s a tradition and the best. The others focus on chips, fries, etc but, this place is great hot dogs and every summer I will be there.

Looked so cute but we were so sad that they did not have all beef dogs. Homemade root beer is mild and nice. Please get all beef dogs! Even the Ypsi hot dog place has all beef dogs.

Monroe Original is a small orange 1950’s style drive-in restaurant. They serve hotdogs, drinks and chips only, but these are the BEST darn chili dogs you’ll find anywhere. Rumor has it that the owner was offered a significant sum of money for the chili recipe but refused to give it up. Even after it was sent to a lab and analyzed for the ingredient list this great chili could not be replicated. Stop in, ask for«one all the way» and a large beer. Service is quick, and the root beer comes in a frosted glass. Outdoor, in-your-car dining only, so it’s a seasonal stop. Don’t visit in the winter!
