Monrovia Canyon Park

First time doing this trail last weekend, and it’s an easy, shady family hike. You can park in the residential area before the entrance, and it’s a 2 mile walk into the parking area. Parking is $ 6 –must bring cash. It’s my first time, so idk if there’s ever a staff to collect pkg fee. So, we had to walk up to the green ‘box’ and place our $ 6 in the envelope. You need to detach the stub and leave it on the dashboard. One bathroom in the lower pkg lot, and if you’re pkg in the upper lot (must pay first at the entrance), there are more bathrooms. Gets crowded on the weekend. Dogs and kids would enjoy this hike. We used the Bill Cull Trail to get to the falls and then headed back on the trail that led to the upper pkg lot. The Bill Cull Trail is a narrow trail hugging the mtn, so not for those scared of heights as everyone said. The trail back was much easier.

Took my daughters 6&8 for a stroll and it was ok. I suggest paying the parking fee of $ 6 and saving Energy for the hike. We will back soon waterfall is VERY SMALL

Short, short, short, short hike. Can it even be called a hike with it being so short? Regardless, it was still very nice. I love the shade, the scenery, and all the greenery! Surprisingly, there was a waterfall, but since there’s really nowhere else you could go after reaching the waterfall, people just hang out there like it’s a waterhole and they’re all animals in the Saharan heat.
The price of parking for us on a Sunday was 6 $ based on an honor system where you put the money in an envelope and into a box. The rangers are super nice, they drove by asking if we had enough water. I probably wouldn’t make my way out this far for this hike (45 minutes drive) but if I was in the area, I’d go again. I think it’s worth doing it once.

Didn’t see any waterfall. did we pass it? If it was dried up, we don’t care! We loved it! Rocks, hills, beautiful old trees, thoughtfully crafted stone paths. We loved every 100 meters more.
We didn’t even mind having to walk from the neighborhood parking after 5pm, and stayed hiking until 8pm
The map at the top of the trail where it splits off to the scenic overlook trail (white dashes) versus staying on the black dotted line trail made no sense. We figured it out, but if we were in a hurry, or injured or something that would have sucked.

Didn’t know and went there around closing time on a weekday. Asked the gatekeeper if there may be another way out if we decided to proceed and go in. He started giving us attitude and was super rude and unprofessional practically yelling at us. Telling us to park on the street then and walk in if we want to go and not answering our question.

There were lots of people hiking since it was Memorial Day and parking was a little far down the road too. People brought their kids, dogs and families since the hike is not too strenuous. One of the better hikes I’ve been on since there are a lot of shady spots where you can catch your breath/​take pictures. Tiny waterfall at the end and clearings here and there where you can relax. Overall, a pleasant hiking experience.

I had a great hiking experience here. I took the waterfall trail and it was about 2 miles one way. It was a relatively easy hike going up and hiking down was a lot easier. I was so happy to see the waterfall! The scenery was beautiful and the fresh air was very refreshing. I would definitely come back here.

Somehow when returning from the waterfall I took a wrong trail back and ended up on a paved road. This paved road is way easier so I wouldn’t go up the paved road unless you are looking for an easy and quick trip to the waterfall.

This one in particular isn’t huge but it is a waterfall and still beautiful.
Waterfall had a good flow when we visited which was in May 2016. There had not been any recent rain but the weathers been on the cooler side the weeks before our visit.

This is a fairly easy hike, well maintained trail and family & dog friendly. Parking is $ 5.00 if you choose to use their lots but I always park in the residential area, so I can get some extra steps in. The hike does have a lot of shade and the incline is not painful at all. I would say this is a great hike for beginners, elders and children.
I am actually here at least 3 times a month. I have seen a bear, numerous deer, a salamander and a deer carcass 0 – 0

Ben Overturff trail review! there are a limited number of trails at Monrovia Canyon Park. I’ve been to the falls so this time we decided to take the more challenging and extended Ben Overturff Trail (which was pretty empty except 2 other groups along the way)
for Ben Overturff i would suggest asking the park ranger for a map since the trail head is up the paved road past the scout campground (take the fireroad down if you wanna make a loop)
the reason i didn’t love this hike is that a big portion of it was on paved road, there were TONS OF GNATS, and the cabin at the top was nothing but ruins so there was no «AHA» view at the top
NOTE: parking inside is not free & closes at 5pm so park in the neighborhood before the parking and walk in if you want to save money or you want to stay later

Free street parking if you do not mind the ¾ mile extra walk to get back to the main gate. Dropped off my wife at the gate and ran back with my dog in like 10 minutes. The walk there is harder then the walk back. The parking lot charges $ 6 on weekends.
They have really clean restrooms compared to the other hikes in the area.
Hike was pretty easy and not to long. Took about 2 hours total with my curious dogs and hanging out at the waterfall.
The dirt path getting to the waterfall was pretty narrow at curtain points. I was really scared for my pups at times.
The waterfall was running, most likely due to the last rain storm we had. It is pretty small but better then seeing nothing. My dogs loved the water.
Overall it was a very easy hike. Total with street parking was less then 4 miles.

First time coming here with a friend for a short hike. The hike itself was 2 miles and a little more, but because we parked about a mile away, the total hiking distance us about 4 miles.
Note that if you do not want to pay for parking, there is free parking at the residential area. Parking at the entrance of the park is $ 6.
We hiked on a hot Sunday which made the hike in re exhausting but the hike itself was not strenuous. It is mainly uphill as you are heading in the trail towards the waterfall, but that makes going back much easier.
The waterfall was tiny! Nothing spectacular but I was happy to see water nonetheless in our current drought conditions.
Overall a good hike for beginners because it is short and low elevation.

Kudos to the park rangers Steven & Dan for informing me about what Canyon Park has to offer. Nice dirt trails or paved roads for you to hike. They also have cabins for rent, waterfalls to see, a dam for you to explore & many other things to do with your friends & family.
The park is closed to the public on Tuesday. I believe you can still use the park, but can’t drive your car in. They charge you $ 5 – 6 to park your car at the lower level or upper level next to the Nature Center.
For all of you that are talking prescribed medication for health reasons, please do so before you do this hike. As I’m hiking up the paved road to the Nature Center, I’m huffing, puffing, breathing deeply & it felt like my heart is beating heavily as if it is jumping out of my chest. Maybe I’m just out of shape & need to get out more often.

Short, easy, scenic hike. I hiked it for the first time today. It is pretty easy to get to since it is not too far from the 210.
Parking– $ 5 weekdays, $ 6 weekends, free on the residential streets I parked on Canyon/​Ridgeside and it added about 1.5 miles to the total hike
Trailhead– I accessed the trail on the left side after passing the ranger station; the trails are pretty narrow for the most part, shady, with a not too steep incline to the waterfall
Waterfall– about 1.25 miles from the trailhead; it was flowing pretty well today but it is on the smaller scale; some large rocks to rest on and view the waterfall before heading back down

Let me start this off by saying if you’re not used to hiking, you may want to start with an easier trail. This was my first time here and we did 10.07 miles! The scenery is beautiful, and there is about 2 miles that is moderately difficult to navigate.
There’s a location where you can pay to park, which may be a viable option if you don’t get there early. Luckily, we arrived around 8:30, so there was parking on the street about half a mile before the entrance. The bad part about this is that after a 3+ hour hike, it’s a half a mile from the entrance!
Be sure to bring your GoPro or high def camera, because the scenery is beautiful! There are little ravines throughout the trail as well as a giant dam that used to be filled with water. In addition, there are signs that discuss the historical aspects of the trail itself.
Overall, I really enjoyed the hike. It’s great to take your dog if you’re lucky enough to have one. I’m looking forward to going back, but definitely not after a 12 hour shift! Lol!

I went on a day after it rained and the waterfall was semi disappointing.
My group parked in the residential area for free and walked maybe 5 – 10 minutes to the start of the actual trail. You have to enter past the facilities services and pass a cabin rental place to find a sign that says «self guide trail». Once you find that trail you may or may not be able to find bears which seems really cool lol the trail is maybe a 20 – 30 minute walk with a bunch of great nature photo ops.
The reason I gave this place 4 stars is because throughout the whole trail there’s a stream that’s very calming and the whole trail is very calm and beautiful and lots of green nature but once you reach the actual waterfall it’s really small compared to eaton canyon and this was on a day after it rained. Besides the lack of a huge waterfall the trail was pretty chill and very dog friendly and semi kid friendly.

Short hike :(Wasn’t what I was expecting but perfect for beginners

I am either out of shape or took a different trail, but my hike was fairly not that easy. My cousin took us on a different trail that led to the same waterfall. The trail was uphill for the most part and very narrow. There were spots that were very easy breezy to walk. I enjoyed the uphill as it made the short hike more worth it. The hike was about 1.5 miles one way. I did not see any animals, but heard a few things rustling in the bushes and trees. Overall, the hike was pleasant and it is a fairly clean trail.

I really enjoyed this hike. The hike has a steady incline which gives you a decent workout but not too difficult. You need to pay for parking in their lot or find street parking down the hill for free (adds to your workout.) It’s a pretty busy trail, very pet friendly. There are several trails that you can take depending on how long you want to hike for. One of the trails that you pass to go to the waterfall, goes the other way.
Once you reach your destination assuming it’s the waterfall, there are plenty of rocks to rest on and take a little break. The pool that the waterfall falls into is pretty shallow, so you can almost go under/​next to the waterfall to take pictures.

A very very mellow hike. As soon as you enter in feel immediately like you entered into a different time. We took our kids with us on this hike and they enjoyed every moment of it. They ran ahead of us most of the time… They enjoyed their times climbing trees, collecting little acorns and little pine cones. The waterfall wasnt much of a waterfall. There was only a trickle of water, but the kids still enjoyed jumping around and over it. Kids were able to do this with ease and it was a great one to start as an introduction to hiking.

This is a pretty easy hiking spot. I’ve seen young children and dogs along the trail. There are several different trails; I’ve only tried the ones leading to the waterfall. I’ve been lucky every time I come here because the water is still running. I’ve heard sometimes there is no water, so there’s not much to look forward to at the end. You hike up and then come down the same way; the trail is not a loop. There’s a restroom available at the parking lot and another one further up the street (closer to the cabin rentals). They lock it up after 4:30 pm though.
The road leading to the entrance of the park is in the middle of a residential area. When you see a bunch of cars lined up against either side of Canyon Blvd, that’s when you know when to park for free. You can pay $ 5 on weekdays to park inside or $ 6 on weekends. I would say this trail is quite popular and therefore can get crowded, especially by the waterfall. Parts of the trail are narrow and can only fit maybe two people. Young children can slip and fall, so they need to be watched at all times. I usually see some squirrels and birds here and there.
The trail will take 1 — 1.5 hours going up and back. I added the extra 30 minutes for photos and random exploring off the trails.

It’s good for hiking. You can choose the trial with more shading. But be prepared, coz there’s a high chance to meet the beer, yea, even in the daytime. By the end of the trail, you will see the small waterfall, you can use this ice cold water to cool your water too. It’s not a tough hike, but when you need some outdoor activities, that’s one of your good choice too.

Such a beautiful hiking trail! I don’t have a lot of nice hiking trails near my area, so I always like to come up further into the mountains to enjoy a nice walk over the weekend. I decided to come here this past weekend (it was kinda gloomy/​sprinkling) but we wanted to get outdoors. We wanted to hike to the waterfall, which we heard is the easiest one.
The hike itself starts further up but we parked at the first parking lot so we had to walk a bit before we reached the starting point, but hey, not complaining since I need to walk more lol. They have another parking lot that’s further up so you’re closer to the trails.
However, we did encounter a bear !!! Good lord, I almost shat myself because it was right next to us and I didn’t even realize it until I heard rustling noises. I know you’re supposed to act big and go crazy, but because I was in shock, I just ended up turning around and walking away slowly D; Anyways, the bear didn’t attack us, but definitely be aware that they walk the same paths as everyone else. Just be careful!
Parking is $ 5 on weekdays and $ 6 on weekends, bring cash!

The air quality is amazing compared to where I’m from (Long Beach). The hiking trail we took led us to a small waterfall. I took my baby (2 years old in January) and he loved it! Theres a small nature center where you can look at some taxidermy animals and slides under a microscope. I bought a bracelet and a nice stone (gotta support them!)
The trails were pretty easy. There are some large rocks that you have to climb over, but nothing too extreme.
I highly recommend coming here if you want to do a small hike. There are other trails you can take, but I don’t know the details on how hard they are or anything like that.

This is a really easy hike, perfect for beginners! You can park inside the park for $ 6 or park outside in the residential areas. If you park outside, you will be walking about half a mile before reaching the trail. My hiking buddies and I felt like we cheated parking inside because the hike was so short! Next time we will probably park outside just so we can hike a bit more.
SHADE SHADE SHADE. This hike was so shady and cool. There was so much natural shade from the trees which kept us cool from the sun. The hike was very forest-​like with some incline and a few stream crossings. At the end of the hike is a small waterfall. Apparently it used to be bigger, but of course, we are in a drought now.
No bear sightings but we did see this very large gray squirrel causing ruckus in the trees above the trail. Largest squirrel I’ve ever seen! This hike was a bit too short for us but still an exciting adventure for those who like to hike!
Are you trying to convince some friends to hike with you but they complain about the sun? Bring them here!

Beautiful trails and nice little waterfall at the end. I’ve been coming here since I was a kid and love that it’s just a 5 minute drive from my house. I like how friendly everyone is and how clean the park is. I’ve come across rattle snakes and bears here, so definitely be careful if you’ve never encountered any of those dangerous animals before.
I came here again yesterday and loved the hike, but was bummed they closed the gates at 5pm. I had to park way out on the streets and do a long walk all the way in plus my hike (which I didn’t mind much because I like the walk) but I noticed parking now costs $ 5 during the week and $ 6 on weekends. That’s crap because they used to only ask for a donation of $ 2. I don’t know why they suddenly want people to pay that much to park there for 1 – 2 hours. I’d rather park on the street again instead. When I went to Eaton Canyon they didn’t even charge for parking and they have a bigger waterfall there and more trails. Obviously I will continue to come here, but not worth it to pay that much to park my car. It should still remain of donation of $ 2 and if people want to pay more they can.

I lived in Monrovia and loved this little gem. the waterfall trail is about 1.5 miles of you start at the guard station and hike the single track in the left of the road. It’s shady enough that even on the hottest days you won’t Fry before you get to the water.
It’s a good hike for beginners or children since you can park relatively close to the falls and make it as short as .5 miles total.
I suggest taking on the Ben Overtruff Trail (that road along the right that no one drives up) …Ben Overtruff trail connects to a lot of the Angeles Forest via fire roads and mixes some single track… and there is the remains of an old cabin towards the end. The water is cool but the longer trail on the right is just more satisfying for a solid hike.

Parking is $ 5 during the week, $ 6 on weekends so we opted for residential parking and added extra milage to our hike since we did Asuza Fish canyon the AM.
There were different types of trails to take so we decide on the easiest, but still challenging Falls trail. Lots more shades here, just let me say up front, the falls was more like a destination. Go to Fish Canyon, you’ll be more impress. But the hike was what we were after since our AM hike left us wanting more. There are a few skinny steams to cross but not bad if you fall in. Your shoes just get moist. All in all, we got our hike fill so by the time, we got back to our car, we were out of water, so we finished just in time. Not bad, worth coming back.
Oh yeah I forgot to mention, on our way into the park, along the hillside, near some residential homes, we saw two bear cubs, trying to get into their swimming pool! Well, you know the momma bear is not too far away, so I ran! Just trying to be safe and not get in the way;-)

Update for instructions… If you’re in Monrovia visiting one of our shops and you want to take in what we have to offer, then just park in one of the town parking lots, walk north on Myrtle Avenue, past Foothill, keep walking up Myrtle till you hit East Hillcrest Blvd, then take a right until you get to N. Ivy Blvd, take a left and follow the road to Canyon Blvd to get into the park.
Even if you are walking, the $ 5 donation goes a long way. Anyway regardless, enjoy the park, waterfalls. If you’re concerned about the amount of walking, I’m over 50 years old, chubby, if I can do it, you can do it. Also FYI I had high blood pressure, took pills for it, since I started walking each day past 2 years, Dr. states I no longer have to take the pills.
I absolutely guarantee that with your smile, a backpack with water bottles and first aid kit (not that you’d need it but recommended), you’ll have a great time, bring the right footwear and enjoy a few hours with nature!

Es cierto, pocas veces en la vida encuentras un lugar así que cumpla con todas las expectativas de ser un parque seguro, con hermosos pasajes propios de la montaña, pequeñas cascadas y un riachuelo que se incorpora hasta un gran presa de agua.
Si tuviera este lugar cerca realmente no dejaría de ir todos los días sin falta pues el subir es un excelente ejercicio y el sonido de las aves y otros animales lo hace un lugar muy recreativo y relajante. La ocasión que vine mi perrito quedo encantado con todo el recorrido y también ya al final no me toco ver osos pero sí alcance a ver un hermoso venado.
Algo que me encanta también de este lugar y lo hace perfecto, es que tiene su propio cuerpo de bomberos y guardabosques. Hay señalamientos por todos lados, estacionamiento propio (con costo y opcional), así como actividades para jóvenes y grupos. Lo que lo hace aún mas especial este lugar, es que las personas que lo visitan en su mayoría hacen un esfuerzo por preservar el lugar limpio.

Best hike around. It’s not strenuously long but its also not short. The hike there and back is probably around 2 miles which I think is a great distance for a hike. It will take up about 1 – 2 hours and its nice because its close enough to visit often but its also far enough so you can get away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy some fresh air and maybe even encounter some deer. I’ve seen deer about 3 times, so fun. If you enter the park with your car, parking is $ 5 but most people park just outside on the street and walk to the hike (you save some bucks and add to your exercise). Its not a difficult hike but it does take some energy, great intermediate hike for those that like a short casual hike.

I need to hike more often! When a girlfriend of mine invited me to one I immediately jumped at the opportunity. There was no traffic getting to Monrovia and I would say that this Unilocal address is the best one to use. No confusion getting there but I will say that you can park near the entrance for free or drive in and find parking in lots located throughout.
I opted to park in the first lot I saw and pay my $ 6. No hassle as I got there about 7:45am. My girlfriend found me and I hitched a ride with her to meet with our group. There was no distinct sign indicating where the trail starts so we all just pointed a direction and went. It ended up being the trail to get to the waterfall.
The hike is not strenuous but there are moments where you’re going up an incline. I think had we not drove further in, the hike would have been much longer but we somewhat «cheated.» Oh well. It was still a hike! I liked that it was shaded. No sun whatsoever. And since we got there early, there were people but definitely not a crowd.
We finally reached the waterfall and just hung out for a bit, and after we made our way back. We opted not to do another hike. Overall, it’s a great way to get your exercise in without dying from the heat or from Mother Nature. A great way to spend a weekend morning.

So you have two choices, pay $ 5 to park inside the park or park for free on the streets. I opted for free parking, the walk to the trail is only like half a mile or less so it is not bad, just be careful of oncoming cars. The trail is pretty easy and simple. There are a few areas where you have to be careful or else you’ll be rolling down the stream. The waterfall itself is pretty small and doesn’t have that much water cause of the drought. The hike should take about 40 minutes to get there and 30 minutes to come back to the beginning. This is a good beginner hike for you if you’re just starting out. If you want a workout, this would not be recommended.

So on our quest to find new local hikes, this was our 1^st one of the summer. We parked in the lower lot, be prepared to pay 5.00. The lot is tiny, so get there early or find a spot in the residential area and awl further or go to the higher lot, and walk less. There is a public restroom, which I suggest that you use before you start the 3 mile trek. It is CLEAN!
Now for the hike, it is a slight incline, with plenty of shade. the path at times is narrow, so be courteous of people passing. There is plenty of poison oak, so beware. I am pleased to say, that I did not see any sign of graffiti or trash. WAY TO GO HUMANS! The waterfall is not grand, but considering we are in a drought, it was worth seeing :)

Got the opportunity to come and hike the trail leading to the small waterfall. When I mean small, it really is small. Oh drought.
Anyways, parking is pretty easy. You can park in the residential areas for free or you can pay $ 5 to park in the actual park. If you park in the residential areas be prepared to walk a bit (not difficult at all). If you are scared of getting lost, just remember that there are probably a bunch of other people who are going on this hike as well!
This hike has so much shade! No need to worry about getting sun burnt or even darker from the sunlight. It’s a pretty short hike also. 1 or 2 bottles of water on a hot day should be sufficient. You have to cross the streams a couple of times but theres enough stepping stones around to prevent you from getting wet.
Nice easy hike! Would go again!
