This town is the last populated area before the 100 Mile Wilderness section of the Appalachian Trail, the segment that leads to the end point at Mt Katahdin. When the Monson General Store is closed, this plus a pub and a BBQ restaurant are the only places for northbound hikers to resupply for an isolated full 100 plus mile hike. This convenience store gives no indication of its potential importance to the national treasure that is the AT. Drinks, like bottled water, are only a little cooler than room temperature and prices tend to be double or triple what similar commodities would cost elsewhere, expensive even by convenience store standards. It would not take much to make this a spot that through hikers would look forward to patronizing as they walked the 2000 miles from Georgia. As it is, it is simply just another bit of mediocrity alongside the road. The business could be awarded two stars as opposed to one, in that despite the lack of nearby competition for gasoline, those prices are competitive with stations between Monson and larger cities. If you need just another gas station, this place actually is no worse than many others.
