I had brunch here a few times in the summer. The food is awesome!

I really wanted to love Anderson’s, and I would totally go back again and give them another chance. I’m giving three stars because I felt the portions were small, and because the prices on the wall/menu were different. We were also given a brunch menu that was only served Saturday/Sunday and we were there on a Friday. Thankfully what we ordered was also on the regular menu… Had I wanted something else I would have been sorely disappointed. My husband and I got«The Mitch»($ 11) their famous sandwich, which was good, however the waitress said it would be filling we were hungry which we were… Needless to say even with a side order or kale salad($ 7), which was delicious yet SMALL, I left feeling like I could eat another sandwich. Lastly, I know everyone has bad days, and I have worked in the food business for 8 years and I am sure I have had days where i couldn’t fake being happy. But, the owner/cook, seemed to have a scowl on her face the whole time even when I smiled at her(it’s a small place with an open kitchen). When I requested my egg extra runny for my sandwich the server relayed It to her and had her come back to me saying that it always comes fried runny. Yet my husbands sandwich was more over medium– hard. Barely runny. Pros: tasty food Cons: small portions for large price You leave smelling like FOOOD, more than most places Seemingly unhappy/disinterested staff

I actually am nervous to write this review because I don’t want others to discover the gem I found one Saturday morning amidst the very crowded brunch crowd in Montclair. My boyfriend and I were searching for a place to go with our 8 month old daughter… And we literally are sick of waiting on huge lines for mediocre food and service etc. It’s too much with a small child. So I remembered that this place existed because I took a sewing course right across the street. We decided to drive down, parked in the lot across the street, and carried in our baby and her seat. We walked in, found ourselves with the place to us. And three people behind the counter. We were greeted warmly, and were told the specials etc. I got one of the lemonade drinks the server recommended which was a lemonade concord drink… Expensive but worth it. Anyways, this isn’t a place you come if you want to order like two eggs and this and that and special whatever. No. You come here if you are in the mood for like amazing whatever that is placed in front of you. French toast with peanut butter and bacon(mind you the peanut butter isn’t just skippy and the bacon is beyond) … Amazing fresh made scallion biscuits with cheddar bacon eggs… This place is literally incredible, and so cool. Everything on the menu is amazing… And I highly recommend the Parmesan truffle fries. Wow. ANDTHECOFFEE. That alone can make you come here. Holy shit. Ok I’m done. Much respect to the owners and servers here who make this place wonderful.

I’ll start by saying the only reason there are 4 stars instead of 5 is seating. Not very comfortable at all if you don’t end up at either of the 2 tables inside. Which is unfortunate because if the weather doesn’t permit, you just can’t enjoy your food(which IS delicious) sitting at the tiny rickety tables outside-believe me-I tried. I couldn’t enjoy or finish my food(really just wanted to; so yum) and it got cold right away because it was windy outside that day. This doesn’t really seem like the kind of food which will travel well for pickup or be as good after a while, either. Hopefully, the next time we give it a try, we will have a better dining experience and I can update my review! Now, for the food. THEFOOD. Do yourself a favor and go here at least once. Order The Conductor if you can. You’ll slap your momma, it’s that good. They seem to have a southern-down-home approach to cooking, are unafraid to pair unconventional textures together and it results in a combination of flavors in each bite. Your entire mouth is a party, folks. My husband and I ordered the same dish and couldn’t believe how delicious it is. I’m not even gonna try to do it justice. Just know that if you love bacon and life, you’re gonna enjoy it. We also ordered the Elvis Waffle-bummed they brought it out first and it sat in the wind and grew cold. The first warm bites I did try upon it being brought out were in line with our other dish-same thoughtful approach to pairing of flavors and textures. There is a thing called butter maple-you’re going to want to bathe in it. Amazing. Can’t wait to give this place another try… hopefully, while sitting indoors. I wouldn’t go back to sit outside and wouldn’t urge anyone else to do so. Definitely try if you’re in the area and looking for delicious food.

What a nice little hole in the wall place. They get 4 stars over 3 because of the farm-to-table fresh food! Went for brunch and sat outdoors on a nice day(very very limited seats inside anyways) and had our meal. We ordered the chicken and waffles, stuffed French toast, and chorizo scramble. Everything was pretty tasty and made fresh. I also had their drink of the day which was a lychee lemonade and that was really really light and refreshing! They put real lychees and I didn’t taste any lychee purée or other added sweeteners which I highly appreciated. Definitely ask what they have on special that day. I don’t really live in the area, but if I did, I would definitely return. Such a cute little spot.

The food here makes me so happy. I’m pretty sure I’ve told the chef I love her a couple of times. The only downside is the space they have to work with. If they were a little bigger, it would help the end customer in comfort. & if she would get a little help in the kitchen it would expedite the service. This is the only reason they 4 Stars because the food is the BOMB !

Overpriced, extra small dish and the waiter wouldn’t leave our table till we order or till we pay the bill. Very weird. I had the smoke salmon omelet, a side of sautéed collard greens and 2 watermelon lemonada $ 27 + tip! What?! $ 15 for an omelet!!! Never again. Not worth, the omelet was so small and nothing much about it for the price, the lemonade however was delicious, $ 5 each. Find some place else…

OK I hate leaving bad reviews on family owned restaurants… I know how hard they work to make their establishment work but I left out of here furious … First of all it took 15 minutes to get our drinks. Mango lemonade which was delicious and cold coffee that was supposed to be hot OK no problem I’ll drink it … When I arrived to the restaurant there was one table occupied outside and the people sitting inside were already eating so I was like great came at a great time noticed some reviews stated to get there early so u could find an open table… So upon getting our drinks we decided to place our orders … I ordered stuffed French toast and bacon and my husband decided to order chorizo eggs w truffle fries… Simple right??? Especially being that menu literally has like less than 10 choices. anyway hubby and I are chatting away when I noticed the inside of the restaurant and nearby outside tables were getting full so at this point we are the first of the crowd… Kept chatting when I noticed Everyone around us started getting there food how is that possible??? And their food was pretty much what hubby and I had ordered now I’m getting aggravated but still kept my cool… Then 5 minutes later I get my order of bacon … OK? Where’s my order of French toast … What am i supposed to do with cheap $ 5 bacon(expensive for no reason) mind u, it was like 3 slices of fat crumbled together. anyway I take a little piece and it was cold … How is that possible??? I thought the pig was getting cut in the back and making it to the table fresh since it took 40 minutes to make it to the table… Anyway 5 minutes later the truffle fries make it to the table now I’m agitated and my husband had to hold me back … Where are the eggs I ask ?? Bacon with no French toast and now fries with no eggs ??? Grrrr… So when the waiter comes back I tell him I don’t want the bacon is cold and his question is what you want me to do with it??? Really? Now I really don’t want it… For $ 5 u should say let me fry u some fresh slices not microwave… Ughhhh… At this point I completely had lost my appetite, I told my husband let’s go inside pay for whatever had arrived to the table I don’t even want the French toast and I’m sure u don’t want the eggs… My husband being a smart man tells me to wait for him in the car he’ ll take care of it… Let’s just say if I would went inside this whole garbage of food would of been free… He tells me the owner/chef … Which I’m convinced all of those good reviews must be of people she personally knows because she has no idea how to cook… Tells him well u can’t cancel your order because the eggs are ready which they were, he tells me; they were just sitting there waiting for someone to take it to the table… The hold up was my French toast… $ 40 later my husband walks to car with $ 40 worth of garbage I mean food and it looked disgusting I kid u not, not even a dog will eat this food, and the pictures are the proof. When I saw the food I was even more furious my French toast didn’t look bad I must admit but why do I care the looks of it doesn’t taste good… My husband’s food looked like vomit … $ 15 for his plate and it was a COLD hot mess… Ughhh never again not even if they’re serving food for free and what got me over the edge was when my husband told me the owner had the audacity to tell him yes u have to wait for the food is only myself in the kitchen and I have to serve 15 people… She’s really lucky he was the one that made it in and not me because I’m not violent but that day I would of left in handcuffs… How is it our problem u have to serve 15 people and we were the first ones among the 15(?) No apologies was given, no is on the house please come back I’m just backed up just attitude for awfully expensive bad food… Will I come again ??? You’re joking right??? Unilocal needs to give me the 1 star back because this place deserves a negative 0(the whole time no one came out to check up on us to let us know what was the hold up completely unprofessional) After wasting money here had to go across the bridge to TOPSDINER … Best food ever . P.s did I mention the seats are so uncomfortable I had to do stretches while waiting for my food… And the food made it straight to the garbage where it belongs. 100% sure the owner will try to twist words when replying to the fact that service and food was atrocious and she was utterly unapologetic and rude. The negative reviews are not LIE they all pretty much say what I said.

This is an awesome place for any meal of the day, with specials being based off the chefs taste and menu items that are always there. I went in for some breakfast, unfortunately i was under the assumption that their brunch menu was daily, those menu items,(chicken & waffles, french toast, etc) are only available on the weekend. However, you can still get some nice breakfast sandwiches and lunch as well as dinner items throughout the day. I went with the homemade turkey sausage egg and cheese on a brioche bun(balthazar bakery) and my mother got the delores special which was the same only on a waffle. Both sandwiches were absolutely delicious and fresh. We also ordered coffee(javalove) which is made to order. The reasons for 4 stars is, the place is very small, if you do not like sharing a table with strangers your only option is to eat outside or at a stool. Service is slow, as there is only one chef preparing everything and one person taking orders and making drinks. Other than that will most definitely be returning to try other things.

This was a great spot to come for brunch even though we didn’t have a reservation we sat down right away midday on a Sunday. There are some little tables outside to sit at which is great in the nice weather. The inside looked neat though with fun décor and communal tables. The food was really good, nothing to complain about. I had the special omelet with salmon and the lemonade and tasted some of the chicken and waffles, which was great! The waffle was very substantial and the chicken was very flavorful and not overdone. The service was very friendly and attentive too.

In the continued quest to try different brunch spots in the area, this one definitely hit the spot. The wait staff was friendly and knew the menu and specials well. I had the chicken & waffle and it was quite filling as well as flavorful. A nice sized waffle and chicken cuts. It could’ve used a bit more syrup but it was definitely the best waffle I’ve had in awhile. I also had the daily special — goat cheese omelette with salmon which was also very good and a nice size. I also got a meyer lemonade seltzer which was refreshing and came in a ‘hip’ jar. On the downside, this place is small. Were it not for the plentiful outside seating we probably wouldn’t have been able to eat without a reservation. If it’s cold out, this is pretty much a take out spot. There is no bathroom either. Also I noticed the consistency issue someone mentioned in their review. I saw another person get the chicken and waffle as I was paying and it was generously covered in powdered sugar. Mine had none. Still it was a good meal and would try eating here again on a day with good weather.

Stop scrolling through Unilocal right now and just go to Anderson’s 1949. There is no reason to eat anywhere else, especially for Saturday or Sunday brunch. In a town like Montclair where there are countless amazing restaurants, Anderson’s blows each of them away. They use local ingredients in creative and absolutely delicious ways and you can tell that the chef puts thought into every dish on her menu. On our first visit, I had a bacon, egg, and cheese on a scallion cheddar scone which was on special. It was probably one of the best breakfast dishes I have ever eaten in my life. The bacon was perfectly crisp and slightly sweet to add depth of flavor and texture. My boyfriend had the chorizo scramble with cornbread and pineapple salsa from the brunch menu. Every ingredient added a new, unique level of flavor. It was super spicy and absolutely delicious which is exactly what he was looking for. Let’s not forget about the coffee. It’s also some of the best we’ve ever had and we are coffee junkies. They had regular and hazelnut. We got the hazelnut and it was perfection. It’s a very small place and it gets pretty packed so I would suggest getting there early. Even if you have to wait, its worth it. We will definitely be back soon!

My friend and I tried this place for the first time today and it was so fantastic that it compelled me to write a review. At first glance, the restaurant did not seem like anything special. When I first walked in, the space was quite small with very little seating but well-decorated and totally adorable. For someone who has brunched at many places, Anderson’s 1949, is definitely one of my newest faves. Now on to the important part… the food! EVERYTHING sounded soo good — I wanted to eat it all lol I did not catch the waiter’s name, but he was very friendly and took the time to explain each special. I ordered the BLT which was made differently than the classic BLT we all know and love. This BLT had a special type of tomato spread, of some sort, with Anderson’s well-known black forest rubbed bacon(soo good). In addition, my friend and I shared a side of parmesan truffle fries. We were completely obsessed! We were even texting about it later on during the day! lol last, but certainly not least, the iced coffee. It was pressed and made to order. The waiter explained to me that they mix some sort of liquid sugar in it, which was nice, because I prefer that over regular sugar. It came out fantastic. I also loved the fact that the cooks made everything in front of us and we could smell the lovely scents of food cooking. The one and only thing I would change is the fact that there was no bathroom available for the customers. I can’t wait to go back and try their weekend brunch!

I’ve been wanting to try this place for a while now. My gf suggested we get together for lunch and I immediately thought of Anderson’s 1949. It’s literally a stone’s throw away to the Bay street train station and perfect for someone who wants to grab some grub before boarding(and after) The place is very tiny and decorated very well. 2 large communal tables and some window seating with bar stools. The place was filled with some of their regulars who were all telling us what their favorite meals are and what to get. BTW it is an open kitchen, so the chef(Sherry Grimes) was throwing in her 2 cents as well. Here’s what we ordered. Korean short rib sandwich. OMG amazing. Special Jerk chicken sandwich. Seriously. The most beautiful thing I’ve ever tasted. Don’t think regular hunks of chicken in a jerk sauce. Think of the most incredible grouping of ingredients all coming together — including the chicken which was more like a meat patty. Sides: Kale salad. I hate kale. This salad was gorgeous and tasted amazing. Kale was prepared in such a way that it was tender and easy to eat. Parmesan truffle fries. Cut in the shape of little match sticks and very addictive. We also split their home made blood orange drink which was exceptionally good AND one small coffee donut. This small donut was packed with a punch of flavors. Not too sweet but just the right amount of umph. Service was amazing and loved that the chef remembered what every one previously ordered as her clients suggested dishes to us.

Wavering between 3 and 4, 4 for the pleasant reception by the staff. I went here for Saturday breakfast. I entered the small restaurant and was greeted by a cloud of dense smoke hovering around the kitchen, which is open and connected to the eating area. Disconcerting, but since I was hangry, found a table for myself and my companion despite the smoky atmosphere. He ordered pancakes while I got a jerk burger(really happy about this, since I’m the type of weirdo who likes eating dinner leftovers for breakfast). The food itself was great — very flavorful and delicious. Portion sizes were ok and you’re not exactly getting the most bang for your buck(if you want that, go to Denny’s or IHOP). I know my companion wanted his dish to be a little larger. We had no problems with the service, although since the entire restaurant is an open space, we could clearly hear the staff talking about a phone canceled order in which(it sounded like) a snotty woman on the phone cancelled her order because she didn’t want to «pay 10 dollars for pancakes.» I totally get some customers are super rude, but as a patron I think it’d be better if I had not heard that conversation. Not a secret restaurant staff have to deal with lots of crazy people, but it’s probably not a good idea to talk about those stories in front of current customers either. We haven’t gone back because we’re the type that prefer an economical breakfast. Maybe we’ll try it again for lunch/dinner.

Came here for a nice Sunday morning brunch after a long night out. It was so worth it. Upon coming here, my friends and I realized how small this place is. However, it is so quaint and hipster. Given that it was Sunday, I opted to cheat on my diet and order hot chocolate. The hot chocolate: So worth it. It honestly might be one of the best hot chocolate drinks I have ever gotten in my life. You could taste the freshness in it. Next up, I got the Chorizo Scramble: an instant awesome mashup dish. The different consistences I had in my mouth at the same time were orgasmic. If you’re coming here for the first time, the above dish is definitely my recommendation. What else made this place is just the whole atmosphere. You could definitely tell the people who run this establishment are a tight-knit family. I love how you could look over your shoulder and see the cooks creating your dish in front of you. Maybe I’m just a sucker for seeing how my food is made, but the whole concept really lures me in. Overall: If you’re looking for a hipster place to grab Sunday brunch with a couple of friends, this is definitely the place to be: D

Came here this morning by the suggestion of one of my friends for Sunday brunch! We love brunch and there’s no better start to the week than a nice well-cooked brunch made with love — and that’s what I found at Anderson’s. Wow, it was so hard for the three of us to decide where we wanted to begin on the menu but we all eventually settled with burgers and scramble — with me enjoying«the Truth» burger, a Mexican chorizo burger. We all shared the Parmesan truffle fries which were pure bliss and a great touch of home — skinny sticks with the right crunch and flavor. My burger was amazing, a great mix of sweet cornbread and salty chorizo bursting with flavor. Not to mention, we ordered some pressed(yes French press!) coffee and one friend ordered a specially made hot chocolate that really warmed our souls. It was a great experience and we all loved the foods we ordered — will come again! I will echo the fact that it’s a small restaurant and we arrived when there were no people but it was packed fairly quickly. Also the chairs aren’t the comfiest but I guess that’s what the food is for: D

Very small space with limited seats.
I ordered the strip steak sandwich with garlic, pickled onions and fried egg on a crispy ciabatta. It was very tasty! My friend had the chicken and waffles. The chicken was boneless. I tasted it and enjoyed it very much. Great coffee! My only complaint would be the seats are not too comfortable and the atmosphere in general is a bit cold. I would defintely come back here! They have only been opne for 3 weeks when I visited, so I defintely see the potential.

My bf and I are constantly on the look out for breakfast places, so naturally, Anderson’s was on my radar for quite some time. For a second lost interest in Anderson’s because their announcement on Baristanet came waaaay before their grand opening, and I was tired of waiting. Nearly two months after opening and having regained interest again, we finally had a chance to try the place. VERDICT? Anderson’s totally made my list! The food here is pure excellence. I wasn’t expecting much from Anderson’s. How many new twists, reinventions, decontructions, recontructions, can you possibly apply to breakfast/brunch? At Anderson’s, it not about that. Anderson made to order menu may be small, but boy are they on point, and pack a punch of flavor. So the day we had visited, it was roughly around 10am on Saturday. Anderson’s being only able to seat about 12 max in the restaurant, was full. Thankfully for my bf and I, a party of two look like they were on their way out. Their/our table was cleaned in due time and we were seated within minutes. We sat down and were given menus right away, and drink orders were taken immediately. Having had the chance to read over their chalkboard wall, and posted menus on their window, I immediately was drawn to their CHICKEN and WAFFLES. Prior to ordering, our server mentioned specials so my bf took the plunge and tried their STEAK&EGG with CHIMICHURRI sauce on ciabatta. We didn’t wait long for our food, and we were in no rush either. This place was smaller than I had imagined, with only one cook, one washer, one runner/counter person. I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt until I was finished eating. Not long after came the chef with our dishes. They were presented nicely and actually took me by surprise as they were not traditional«CHICKEN and WAFFLES» looking waffles. The sandwich looked a little lonely since we didn’t order any sides. I moved past appearance once I had taken a bite of the food. The waffle was aromatic. It was coated ever so delicately with the butter maple syrup. It gave just the right amount of sweetness without overpowering and drenching the waffle. The fried chicken breast blew me away. It was boneless and so tender! Crunchy on the outside, with what my palate believes is peanut oil, similar to how Chinese chicken wings are deep fried. It was quite a pleasant combination with my fragrant waffle. I only had one bite of the Steak and Egg sandwich, but easily concluded that it too was excellent. The ciabatta was crunchy, the steak cooked medium, and grilled/pressed ever so slightly just to give it a great smokey flavor. This I gathered from just one bite. SERVICE: 4.0 of 5.0 FOOD: 4.5 of 5.0 AMBIANCE: 4.0 My only drawbacks to this place are functionality problems: 1. We sat near the faulty door that never wanted to close. Every time someone came in, my bf had to push door to fully close it so that the cold wind would not come in. 2. The table we used wasn’t very stable 3. I don’t believe they’re utilizing the space to their maximum advantage. My bf’s chair was right up to the doorframe of the main door.
