I feel like the quality of the sushi has fallen over the last year or so. Not so much the quality of the fish, but the actual rolls. I find they fall apart pretty easily now in a way they didn’t when I first started coming here. I also really resent that they charge $ 1per roll for brown rice. That feels like a bit much. Maybe a dollar to have your rolls with brown rice, but not a dollar per roll. I also wish their wasabi was spicier. I think I’m going to start to look for a new sushi place.

I have come to this place a few times and have to say the sushi is good but can tend to be a bit pricey. I recommend their spicy kani salad and toro if they have it on special.

This is the best sushi restaurant my wife and I have been to, and we have been to more than just a few. Many unique choices and I have tried most of them. So far I haven’t tried anything I didn’t like.

Best sushi I’ve had in a long time. Fresh and delicious. Great miso soup as well. I will most definitely go back and try other items. Price was about average and we took out so no comment on the waitstaff but overall we are very pleased. First place we have tried in Montclair but we may not go anywhere else lol

I stopped in for their two roll lunch special. The guy with me had then same exact thing I did. You get the option of soup or salad, we both chose the miso soup. The two rolls we chose were the shrimp tempura roll and the California roll. Check was a little over $ 19.00 for two people to have lunch so it was worth it. I’m in this area often and will stop in agAin soon!

Rip off It was Mother’s Day. My husband and I decided to get Japanese food at home. Most of our favorable places were closed on Mother’s Day. I come across this one. I ordered a special roll lobster roll — the size is only half of normal special roll you can get, the same for tuna roll. Rice and noodle are 1⁄3 of you can get !!! Soup is ridiculously small — half oz size of box with half full. We spent 100 including tips for delivery. We were hungry after all It is a rip off place. I heard that Unilocal normally would block negative review for certain merchants I hope the truth can be shared and nobody should be ripped off by such horrible place!

To be honest, I was not very impressed. I’ve been here twice now, and I just did not get a good impression either time. I’ve had rolls(shrimp tempura, tuna, and spicy tuna) and assorted sashimi here. Some of the fish was decent, but some did not taste the freshest to me. I’m sorry to say it, but in my mind there’s no comparison to Dai Kitchi. One positive is the convenience– we walked in on a Friday without reservations during dinnertime and were seated immediately. The liquor store right next door is also convenient, so you can BYOB.

Have only ordered take out from here but it was very good sushi. Tasted fresh. Especially liked that the Rainbow roll uses real crab instead of imitation Krab. Udon was good, as were the shumai. The order took a little more than an hour to arrive, but the delivery person was apologetic and we didn’t mind.

Was here with my friend trying this place out. We ordered green tea. She had a miso soup and some assorted sushi. I ordered shrimp tempura and a tempura California roll(SoCal Roll). The shrimp tempura was very good. The SoCal roll was a bit soggy. The green tea tasted like hot water, not tea. Service was extremely slow, and out waitress didn’t bring more tea each of the two times she said she would. Right now I’m waiting on the check and it’s been several minutes since the waitress said she’d bring it. Most likely not returning.

This place is great! Totally hidden in upper montclair but worth the search lol. When I walked in my friend and I were the only ones in the restaurant last night. I usually take that as a bad sign but decided to give it a chance since all the previous reviews were great. The service was excellent, super attentive(although now thinking about it we were the only people in the place!). I have a sesame allergy and they were very careful to make sure nothing touched my food. For appetizers we ordered edamame(classic) and the pork gyoza, pretty standard and both were good. For dinner I got a plain tuna roll and the SoHo roll. The SoHo roll is usually a deep fried california roll with spicy mayo/eel sauce, I asked them to substitute the avocado for mango. They gave me no problems with the substitution and let me tell you… that roll was fantastic!!! I’m practically drooling over it just thinking about it haha. For desert we got the fired ice cream, always a win. This place is also BYOB — can’t ask for anything more! Only down side is the sushi can be pricey, like 12 – 15 per roll. I didn’t see any specials on certain days. Overall great quality and can’t wait to go back!

I’m not a big fan of sushi. At least I didn’t think I was until I went here, at which time I completely changed my mind about it. A newfound respect and appreciation for this Japanese staple … Went with the shrimp tempura($ 8), fried oysters($ 8) and LBK roll(lobster, spicy Blue Crab, king Crab). For $ 24, I thought the price on the roll was fair and comparable to what others in the area are charging for something similar. The tempura was cooked just right. Not too crispy, but not under-fried either. The fried oysters were definitely interesting, though I still prefer mine raw or baked. The LBK roll was delicious, fresh, and came with just the right amount of wasabi and shaved ginger on the side. The staff was prompt and friendly. And it’s BYOB — always a plus.

Just had the simply divine fried oysters. The way this appetizer is prepared, one doesn’t think they’re eating anything fried at all. These oysters are so delicate in their taste. Also, I had my favorite chef roll named Sade. This roll consists of crunchy spicy tuna, white tuna, mango and spicy sauce. All the flavors complement each other beautifully. Toro Sushi Rules !!!

As an aspiring«foodie» and a sushi-lover, I’ve been checking out the numerous sushi bars in Montclair ever since living here for school(Redhawks, hey). I’ll be straight up when I say this: this is my absolute favorite sushi restaurant in the area. I usually go here for lunch dates and get the Bento Box. The last one I got was Salmon Teriyaki with Shumai, Rice, Vegetables, and 4 pieces of Sushi. First off, the Salmon was deliciously marinated and melted in your mouth. The Shumai was every bit of fried goodness that you would want. The Rice was, well, rice. How can I explain more about that? The sushi. Guys. It was sooooo good! When you order a Bento with 4 pieces of sushi, they are are all Chef’s Choice. I recieved Salmon, Shrimp, Tuna, and Snapper. Each of them was prepared so well and went down very easily. My date who I was with ordered the Esther Roll for us which consists of Shrimp Tempura, Spicy Tuna and Avocado wrapped in White Seaweed. Oh my goodness. I went this 10 times more when I go there next time. It consists of my favorite things AND it tasted delicious. Like seriously fantastic. The service there is very nice(our waitress gave us free Green Tea Mochi Ice Cream which was perfection). The atmosphere is relaxed yet refined. Like you feel fancy but not uptight, you know? I honestly recommend this to everyone. However, keep in mind that there are separate hours for lunch and dinner so plan accordingly.

As far as quality relative to the sushi and sashimi, this is probably the best spot in town as there are many average sushi joints in Montclair. The only negative is the service levels at half capacity and above… I really don’t get how a restaurant doesn’t react better to much needed turns especially during dinner rush…

The food was pretty good. I got the tuna dumpling as my appetizer and it was incredible. The avocado with the crab and thin tuna was really good, I just wish there was a bit more tuna! And my sushi rolls were fine. The Central Park roll was very unique and I really liked it, and the Mexican roll was fine. The service, however, was not good. Although the restaurant was half full, there was only one frazzled waitress who took forever to come over to our table to take our order and bring our food. I saw my plate of sushi sitting on the sushi bar for 10 minutes before the waitress actually brought it over. And when she gave us our check and then disappeared before I was able to give it back to her, I had to get up and find her because I was in a hurry to get to my movie.

After reading a bunch of great reviews I finally had dinner here. The atmosphere is clean and warm(despite the view of the parking lot and the backs of other buildings). Parking is free after 7pm. The fish was fresh and the rice was seasoned very well. The tuna dumpling was an interesting take on a «crab cake» that was light and refreshing. We also enjoyed various combo plates for dinner. The rolls were clean and stayed together(dislike when they fall apart) and the sushi and sashimi were cut and presented beautifully. Have decided to make this our regular sushi spot.

We have been coming to Andy and Amy’s place for years now and often get the Sushi/Sashimi sampler for however many people are dining. We just found out that Andy(who is a traditionally trained Sushi chef) did Omakase and opted for that instead. He served us 5 courses that were all excellent and rivaled some of the dishes we have had at Sushi meccas like Nobu and Morimoto’s. Tuna ‘Dumpling’, fried mackerel cracker, Yellow Tail with Jalapeño and abalone with Uni. Very sublime and expertly prepared and just the right portion sizes that left you full but not stuffed. The best part? The price. Two of us for only $ 60.

3.75 I haven’t found my go-to sushi place ever since I’ve moved to North Jersey. With that said, I went to try this place one night just to see how it really was. I came here for dinner on a random weeknight, a Tuesday if I’m not mistaken. For a Tuesday night, this place was decently filled. Two large groups, three small group of families. We immediately noticed that there was only one server/host working the whole floor. Now, this place isn’t big. Maybe 30 – 35 people tops. But for one lady to expedite the food, greet people, seat people, take orders, I felt really bad for her. Nonetheless she did the best she could. I guess what helps too is that the kitchen really knows how to bang out orders. We didn’t have to wait long for four rolls and one hand roll once she taken our order. The food here is very good. Sushi was fresh, the rolls weren’t filled too much with rice. I had ordered the CONGA(tempura, spicy tuna, salmon, yellowtail, & avocado over three colored caviar) and ESTHER roll(shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, avocado w/seaweed). My only opposition with this place is that they don’t really have a method to describing the sushi combos and specialty rolls. «Shrimp tempura» is not the same as «shrimp with crunchies.» For someone trying to read and visualize how my sushi roll was going to be constructed, it was a little frustrating. I guess that’s what the pictures are for, not everything has pictures. The CONGA was essentially a spicy tuna roll, with salmon, with yellow tail, avocado with three colored roe, and deep fried. The ESTHER roll was was wrapped with marbled green/white seaweed. The CONGA was the only thing that threw me off. The ESTHER had a picture.
