Disappointing, at best. The menu looked lovely but nothing matched the anticipation. The Mountain Mule came in a coffee mug, the tuna was over cooked, the raspberry vinaigrette salad dressing was tasteless, and the peppercorned steaks were ladened with an overwhelming amount of pepper… the bread was yummy! We will not return.

I had heard about this place for several years, but we live an hour and a half away and only pass through en route to Nashville. We generally make that trip earlier in the day, so it has never worked-out to stop. This trip was different and when thinking of places to eat dinner, only High Point Restaurant came to mind. Lucky for us, they had room for two at the early dinner time of 6pm. In the event you didn’t know, the restaurant is located in what is purported to be a home that was financed by Al Capone(either for a mistress, business manager or both). Who knows the validity of the claim, but it makes for a great story. The home has been completely restored and the atmosphere was pretty cool. The menu is quite extensive, but not to the point that they are trying to offer something for everyone. We started with sesame crusted duck. It was too rare for my wife, but I thought it was great. The duck was complimented by fried ginger on argula. They brought delicious(homemade) rolls with butter and even my wife(who is not a big bread eater) opted for seconds. I ordered lobster bisque soup and my wife ordered the house salad(ome of five options) with a pineapple honey mustard dressing. She loved the dressing. While I really had to look to find the lobster(very little) in the soup, it had great flavor. I ordered a filet with truffle fries and my wife ordered grilled shrimp Charleston. My steak was very good and the truffle fries were great!(I wouldn’t have typically ordered fries, but when they include the word«truffle», it’s hard for me to turn away). I was, however, concerned about my wife ordering shrimp so far inland. My concerns were unwarranted. She loved it. Next were the grits. Again, I was concerned because my wife makes homemade(stone ground yellow corn organic) and nearly none others compare for her. She liked them so much that she told the server to compliment the chef!(I don’t think I’ve ever heard my wife compliment the chef). Lastly, we ordered crème brûlée. This is our go-to dessert when on the menu. Some places just flat mess-up a crème brûlée. High Point did not disappoint here, either. I don’t think we’ll make a special trip to come again in the near future(a bit far from home for dinner), but we’ll definitely stop here again, if/when our schedule allows, en route to Nashville.

You got to be kidding. This is no better than restaurant trying to be a restaurant serving food that is not cook properly. Steaks are over cook and cuts are thin. If you are going to serve steaks on fine dining prices they MUST be no thinner than TWO inches. The soup of the day was NO better than vegetable soup with pieces of chicken in it. I really don’t think this restaurant employed a chef!

This is one of our«special places,» and has been for years. Fine dining in a beautiful old house, and it’s just far enough away from our hometown of Franklin that you feel like you’ve really been somewhere… know what I mean? We have visited many, many times and enjoyed terrific appetizers, especially the lobster bisque, exceptionally good salads, delicious steaks and seafood, and our personal favorite crème brûlée anywhere. We’ve never been disappointed. I will say our last trip a few weeks ago the lobster bisque was not the same recipe I remember, had significantly more cheese and no actual lobster that I could detect. Or maybe I’m spoiled after our trip this past summer to Maine, and my memories are now clouded… still good. Definitely plan a visit, you won’t be sorry. For weekend evenings be sure and make a reservation.

My fiancé and I were driving up to Chicago, stopped in Monteagle for the night and found this amazing place! Our server was Terri, she was so pleasant and welcoming! The place had nice ambience, dim lights and a fire place. In the summer you could sit outside. For dinner we had chicken caprese and the grilled salmon both to die for ! We had to skip dessert but the menu looked so delicious! Cheers!

Yeah, I hand out the 5 stars pretty sparingly. Everything was pretty top notch at High Point. For a small town, the place sure was busy. Food and service was great. Wife got Chicken Caprese, is chose Madiera Chicken. I tried both and my wife asked which was better. They were very different flavors, but both were excellent. We’d talked about going to this restaurant before but never seemed to make it. We’ll definitely be going back.

Charming location. Food was well prepared with generous portions. Service was good despite a very full house. Waitress was very friendly, although her backup was a little too enthusiastic clearing appetizer plates before we were done with them. The summer peach salad was very refreshing and the bacon wrapped scallops were excellent. The ribeye steak was cooked to perfection and well trimmed with very little waste. Very good attention to detail. Pricey, but well worth the money. Next time need to make reservations as they are VERY popular esp. with the summer season. P. s. Having read a few one star reviews of this place on Unilocal,I’m not sure where they ate, but it wasn’t the place we dined at.

A good selection of items on menu from steak to duck to fish. Opted for the steak as did my husband. Both ordered medium and both came well done. Not even a little pink in middle. My ribeye had three strips of grissle(?spell) through it. Poor cut. Service was okay. A little sloppy. Waitress handed all four of our menus to one person to pass around. Upon first getting to restaurant, I went to restroom. I overheard a young lady sigh and say«Let’s get this over with. I need to win the lottery so I don’t have to come back to this place.» I smiled at her but imagine my surprise when she was our waitress. May return for another try…

Go here for the baked Brie and you will be happy. I would say 4.5 not 5. The steak Diane sauce was overpowering but the steak was cooked well. The grilled poundcake is amazing as well as the Alfredo. I’ll be back. Two people had the Brie Alfredo, steak Diane, and grilled poundcake our bill was $ 85. This is dirt cheap for the quality. A gem

Great service, classy atmosphere, and delicious food! I live in CA and while visiting relatives we stopped here for dinner, so glad that we did! My filet mignon with the grilled shrimp was amazing! Next time I visit TN I must return! Also the grilled pound cake dessert is a must try!

This place could be soooo much better. The Rainbow Trout was cooked perfectly. It needed no heavy sauce they put on it. Salads fresh and good. Rolls ok. Lobster bisque was way too salty. So were the heirloom potatoes. Too much salt. Plus the service was slow slow slow. And only one bathroom for a place that serves over 60. So wrong. In any state. Plus no women’s or men’s bathroom. Just unisex. Really??? i I do not care what historical list your on. Update the bathrooms & get rid of the sou chef. Salt is killing. We were not offered straws but everyone else had them. Even passing thru you want to entice us to come back. We won’t.

Incredible meal in a historic home! We went here for my husband’s birthday and it did not disappoint! From the fresh bread to the grilled pound cake dessert… everything was top notch! I got the New Orleans tuna and my husband got the Blackberry Duck. Both were cooked perfectly and the side of cheddar grits were a great match! Stop in if you’re between Nashville & Chattanooga… this place is worth it! The patio is also a great spot to sit!

I can’t imagine why anybody would give this place anything but five stars. It has it all… superb food, ambience, service, and history. We were visiting middle Tennessee, from Los Angeles and were taken there by local relatives. Los Angeles restaurants rival any fine restaurants in the world, and High Point rivals the best in Los Angeles!

High Point is a great place to eat with a group. We had reservations for 9 and I was able to hear everyone at the table, which is definitely a plus. I would have given more stars but being a vegetarian, there was very few options to choose. What I did select was good. I got the«personalized vegetable selection.» I opted for the blackberry winter salad, which was excellent! I requested the cheese and the dressing on the side, and the staff were very accommodating in that regard. I also selected the asparagus(hold the Hollandaise). That was most excellent. The fried heirloom potatoes were much too salty for my taste, but otherwise very good. The other guests at our table seemed to enjoy everything in front of them. The wait staff were excellent. Our server was friendly, accommodating, attentive, and just a sweet person! Loved her! I’d recommend this place to my friends! Just wish they would have more veg selections!(Think VEGAN)

Ate here twice recently with colleagues and was happier than previously. The Cesar salad was refreshing an I enjoyed the fillet mignon, although the sauce was too heavy for my taste. Tried the steak Dianne as well but again didn’t care for the sauce. Had the crème brûlée for desert and it was very nice, but definitely large enough for two to share.

High Point is an excellent place for special occasions! The seared tuna is delicious and the Maker’s Mark steak are two of our favorites, however, I’ve had everything on the menu and never had a bad meal! The only criticism I have is that the servers could dress up a bit more and the décor could be more lavish. The theme is roaring 20’s and it is very modestly decorated. Details are important in a fine dining experience. The foods is great it it just needs a little fine tuning.

We’ve given this place three tries hoping it would improve & just don’t understand what others see here. The service & food were B–(to be generous), ambiance was C-, & prices were steep compared to a nearby elegant restaurant in Sewanee.

Had a business dinner there last June 26th, 2014. It was one of the best meals that we’ve had. The food was fresh and well prepared. I had the Bruised and Blue Filet Mignon with Chef’s vegetables and a Loaded Bake Potato. It was just fantastic. Tammy was our server, with 13 years experience there she was forthright with her suggestions and answering questions. When one of my colleagues ask about the scallops she said«they just came in Tuesday and they are on the small side.». It’s always refreshing when someone is straight up honest with you. It would have been very easy to have pushed those scallops on him just to get them out of the kitchen. Since it was a week day we were seated immediately, but I understand it can get very busy during certain seasons. Anyway, great food, great service and wonderful ambience with lots of history and folklore with the Al Capone connection. I highly recommend this for special occasions.
