I had a chance to stay here for two nights for a business trip to a university in the area. The owners were attentive and very friendly. The inn is a classic. The room were very clean. I was there during the snow melting time frame. So everything outside was wet and ugly. The inn was all warm and cozy. Highly recommended.

My wife and I were on a road trip through the New England area. We decided to stop in Montpelier because it was the capitol and there would surely be an abundance of hotel options. We arrived in Montpelier around 7 and found only a few places to stay. We then found out that Montpelier is the smallest Capitol with just under 8,000 residents. Did not expect that! We found The Inn and were able to make a last minute reservation. It was our first time at an «INN». The properties were nice. The best way to explain the feel is by picturing your grandparents house, which gave it a nice, quaint feel about it. Because we checked in so late we did not see any other patrons, which along with the décor, gave it an erie feel. We swore it was haunted! We made it through the night and had breakfast, a good quality continental. Then we were off to continue our road trip. It was a bit pricey, but I think they can charge that because there are not many choices to choose from.

We were looking for a place to stay in Montpelier & found the Inn. The Inn makes an immediate great first impression, which is accurate, because the place is wonderful. It is among a row of historic mansions and nice houses, and it itself consists of a pair of nicely restored very large historic homes. The buildings are lovely. The main building has a large, covered front porch, sitting rooms, dining rooms where the included(high-quality) continental breakfast is offered, & guest rooms upstairs. The second building has guest rooms on two levels, as well as a pantry where he stocks a few snacks for guests, as well as puts out fresh baked cookies in the afternoon. The innkeeper, John, was extremely friendly and hospitable. He showed us the available rooms, which were a «mid-sized» & a «deluxe». The mid-sized was very nice, larger than a typical hotel room, nicely furnished, with a King bed & spacious bathroom. The deluxe was amazing, with its own sitting area, fireplace(no longer used), and giant bathroom. The price on both rooms was comparable to what the Best Western was quoting in Waterbury, just down the road(a bit over $ 200). Our bed was large & comfortable, & the room was quiet. Breakfast was a well-stocked continental buffet, with coffee served by a couple of nice young ladies. We are from Seattle. If/when we return to this area, this is where we will stay.

(Updated) Since John was nice enough to read & reply to my post, I’m upping the Rating to four stars. As I mentioned, the Underwoods are really nice people. _______________________________________________________________________ It’s quaint, but a little shabby. For $ 250.00/night, I guess I expected more. My room was frigid when I got there and it took hours for it to warm up. You may want to set it & head out to dinner if the same happens to you. Everybody’s really, really friendly.

Looking to make a last-minute reservation in Montpelier, I decided to take a gamble with the one 5-star review given here. I was not disappointed. I note that on other popular review sites the Inn at Montpelier has 70+ reviews that average over 4 of 5 stars. The historic house has plenty of charming ambiance and the staff are quite professional, hospitable and friendly. It did not seem too busy during our early season stay. The room met our needs quite well. One of us thought the bed was too firm whereas the other found it perfect. The air conditioning and the hot water worked well, and the towels, sheets, and room were clean. There was a small tv that we did not use as well as books and national geographic magazines. Our rate was quite reasonable and included a tasty, healthy breakfast. Apparently there was a bar and kitchen we could help ourselves to, which we did not really use as we had an excellent dinner in town and did not ned any help falling asleep. This review is coming from someone who hasn’t rented a hotel room for several years, but has seen plenty of them over the years. Note, if you are accustomed to brand new, big chain hotels the Inn might not be your thing, or it just might be a great change of pace that has character and a personal touch.

The first hotel that I’ve stayed in that I didn’t want to leave. The Inn is built out of a 19th-Century home and has a cozy, old boarding house feel to it as a result. As you can imagine, the inn is small and has only a limited number of rooms, which for me only added to the appeal. The first floor offers common areas that remind one of home: a cozy den, a small kitchen, a bar, and a dining area for morning breakfast. Plus, it offers a large porch for guests, as well as an enclosed porch up by the rooms. As far as pricing goes, it’s no worse than a Marriott or similar hotel. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a much better deal.
