Canal’s is my favorite«city to shore» liquor store. It’s conveniently located on my way from Philly to the AC area and doesn’t involve going too far out of the way. The wine selection isn’t huge, but it’s priced pretty well enough. The real draw is their beer selection; they have a great craft beer aisle. And they have employees who are willing to help you find something or just chat about beer. The beer prices are pretty good. The parking lot can be a bit of a pain as it’s located right along the Black Horse Pike. Rather than being a traditional«lot» there are spaces along the front of the store. There isn’t much room to wait for a spot to open up if you are coming from the BHP. It’s also hard to make that left turn back onto the highway. Parking aside, the selection, prices and convenience to 76÷42÷676 make it a good place to stop for my Jersey beer needs.

Decent selection of craft beer, very friendly staff, and it seems like they do a pretty steady business of kegs, if you need larger quantities. Best part is the growler station. Don’t be alarmed when they take you behind an unmarked door, up a staircase, and around a corner. It’s not a strange initiation into the growler fraternity, but just some silly legal nonsense that requires the growlers to be on a different license. As far as the growlers, what they had is what was on their page.

Canals in Mt. Ephraim is your basic large liquor store. They have a decent selection of beers and spirits but where they shine is the wine department. There are bigger wine shops in the area but the guy who runs the wine shop in Canals is fantastic and really knowledgable. They have your typical Aussie critter wines and the lower end mass produced stuff that everyone carries but more importantly they have a large selection of the(really) fine wines which range from $ 10 to $$$. What I also like are the guys that work there like Chris and Brian, they know their stuff!!! Just tell them what you are looking for or even what you are having for dinner and they can point you in the direction that will make you happy — they do not try to upsell you to a more expensive wine so do not hesitate to ask them!!! I really recommend them. Oh and you should also go there on a Saturday as they do a wine tasting which showcases some different stuff that many would not normally try. I go almost every Saturday myself sometimes just for a tasting ;)

After attending a very exclusive Verizon iPhone pick-up party at FedEx’s Bellmawr shipping office, on my drive home I spotted a Canal’s location I had never previously visited. As I am always game to browse – and likely pillage – the beer selection at their other locations, I stopped in. It was a fortuitous decisions, as I discovered they maintain a similarly diverse and satisfying stock of domestic & imported microbrews at a great price. I would rank this location roughly on par with Pennsauken, but below Marlton or Delran on that basis. They appear not to offer the $ 10 build-your-own sixpack option, unfortunately. Items of particular note were the 24 oz. Hitachino bottles. I recently paid $ 7.50 per at Foodery(12 oz. bottles) and they are difficult to locate otherwise, so I was delighted and surprised to discover the White Ale for $ 10 and the Red Rice & Japanese Classic Ales for $ 11 per. That is an uncommon bargain. I restrained myself from purchasing the entire stock, but next time…

Not one of my favorite Canals, as they don’t have as big a selection as some of the others, and their selection of premium liquors is really lacking(or so hidden/locked up I couldn’t find more than an 18 year old JW). But it’s clean, it’s convenient to my house, and there’s no arguing that their prices are hard to beat. If I need a quick case of something like lager, or a bottle or run for mojitos, this is a great place to stop at.
