Typical BBQ joint … With a drive thru. The burnt ends sandwich was great! With a nice smoke ring, good peppery flavor. We also ordered the pulled pork sandwich with the special sauce it was pretty good. Mac n cheese was soso probably wouldn’t order again. Besides that I would recommend it.

Not bad for mass production BBQ. Ribs and pork was good, brisket was sliced in very large chunks and cut the wrong way making it stringy and tough. Woman cleaning tables was nice. Not a fan of the onion ring mass of sweet dough.

I’m from Michigan and I’ve had BBQ all over including Memphis and Texas, and this place rocked! I’d move to SC just to eat here every day!

I’m from Texas and this BBQ is a WIN. Gluten-Free Marinades Get the ribs, the chicken, the pulled pork, some sauce, and you are good to go. This is melt in your mouth BBQ, it’s almost on point with Swig & Swine I’d have to say they are both equal in quality and taste just depends on style of BBQ your into. If your hungry, this place has a drive through, or go in for their legit staff who’s attitude is great and ready to serve you some damn good BBQ. The interior of this place is also awesome, kind of like I’m at the ranch house just chillin.

Our experience was SO bad! The food when we got there was obviously leftovers or they were just careless. It tasted horrible, and it’s really hard for me to be upset with BBQ. They dudnt have most of their sides available and their cornbread was gross. We are never going back.

Outstanding BBQ and sides. This was my first time here and I had ribs and my son had bbq pork. Both were amazing. Sweet potatoe soufle was great and beans were pretty good. A little pricey but worth it.

Very good bbq for when you’re in a pinch for time(or not). The condiments they offer for your bbq delicacies are endless and you won’t leave here without a full belly. I love their pulled pork sandwich with the mustard-based sauce and their baked beans and cole slaw. Next on the list for me to try is their fried pickle spears — as if pickles couldn’t get any better! You won’t be disappointed if you choose Melvin’s.

It is hard for me to write this review. I’ve patronized Melvin’s in Mt. P for over a decade on and off. My last trip was the proverbial«last straw». The quality and portion size has gone so downhill over the years that I simply can not justify going there any further. I came in for lunch recently on a weekday. The drive thru line was full and the inside area was heavily populated. They take the orders at the counter fairly quickly, although there was a «What the hell do you want?» feel to the process. Ordered a two meat combo(turkey and pulled pork) with slaw and potato salad. $ 18 bucks, which is just about what it would cost at Home Team BBQ, so this better be good. Sigh… First off, for 18 bucks the portions are downright paltry. 2 small slices of turkey. It came out as a pile, but it was one whole slice with a few portions put together to make it look bigger. The taste was alright, the spice on the outside wasn’t very potent. The portion wasn’t dry, but it wasn’t overly juicy as well. The pork was very disappointing. Multiple, large pieces of gristle, and it was pretty dry. It is impossible to expect fresh pull from a place like this, but there was no effort to conceal the heat lamp. The red sauce makes the pork a little passable. The sides are a disaster. The coleslaw tastes like it was made with cola. There is no tart element in it at all. The potato salad is a 50⁄50 mix of potatoes and mayo. The cornbread was the best part(at least it was included). The watermelon slice is a nice touch, but too little, too late. It’s too bad, I used to love this place because of the price point and value(quantity and quality). Now with all the new joint popping up(Lewis in downtown, the 3 Home Team’s, etc.), it just isn’t worth it to fight over the bridge to get here.

The best SCBBQ in Charleston! I have been a regular here since I was a cadet in the 80’s. The menu has all the usual BBQ favorites, pulled pork, beef ribs, chicken and even brisket. I just love the smokey tender pulled pork, and the sweet mustard sauce is perfect. We usually go for the pulled pork tray/platter as they come with 2 sides. Now these aren’t just some small side, expect delicious steak fries, large onion rings, baked beans, coleslaw, and many more to fill you. Plus you get a piece of their soft as cake cornbread. Besides the fantastic BBQ they also have nice large burgers, which were better than some other well known burger establishments. I fully recommend Melvins for the food! Minus 1 star for just average counter service, could be friendlier.

One of the best BBQ restaurants around. The chicken and brisket are delicious! We loved everything we have tried so far. The sides are good too. Cornbread is sweetly southern. Mac and cheese is rich and cheesy.(Doesn’t taste like baked Stouffers as do many other restaurants.) There is also a condiment bar with pickled veggies and peppers and Melvin’s sauces. They also have daily specials.

Every time we go to Melvin’s we do ribs and briskets! Both are my favorite and I refuse to give anything else a try. My fiancé and I usually share the entrees and generally choose Mac & Cheese, green beans and fried okra as our sides. Melvin’s also has the best cornbread and sweet tea in town. Hands down. Would give five stars but I don’t always feel the FOH staff are always nice and personable.

Yummy!!! Had the chicken sandwich with the secret mustard sauce. It rocked. Collard greens were wonderful. hubby had the brisket and baked beans which were also delicious. We had a small dog that we brought with us and they let it sit on the patio. very friendly staff. Will definitely come back again before we leave town

Being a ‘home Smoker’, Q joints are held to a higher Standard. Pulled Pork was ok, could have had more Smoke flavor, really enjoyed the Carolina sauce the most but wish it wouldn’t have been drenched in the Sauce. Brisket was fantastic… it was 5 Stars!!! Nice bark, juicy, top shelf. Onion Ring(Yes, singular) was different for sure. Fries were excellent and Cole Slaw was good and reminiscent of The Colonel’s.

Went to this place twice a few days ago and it was outstanding. The people are very friendly and seem be be very caring about their customers. I had the half chicken one day and the brisket the next. The brisket was the better choice in my opinion because of the moist, tender meat that it was. Not to mention the sweet tea and the BBQ sauces are off the charts. Be sure to go visit this place if you have the time to do so.

My wife and I are vegetarian, but, when our carnivore friends wanted to dine here, we joined them. We ordered their Veggie Plate which consisted of four choices off the non-meat menu. I had Fried Okra, French Fries, Side Salad, and Mac & Cheese. It was very adequate, and very large. I was surprised at how much food I got for $ 11.00. It really filled me up. The French Fries were good, and as expected. The Side Salad was very pedestrian, but good, too. I like Fried Okra because I can’t get it at home. The Fried Okra here seemed a bit overcooked, and more«hard» than I expected. The Mac & Cheese was not very flavorful, and kind of disappointing. What I really liked about this place was the atmosphere, and the«Pickle Bar.» They had all sorts of pickled treats that diners could help themselves to. There were pickled jalapenos, pickled banana peppers, a pickled salad, and, of course, pickles. It augmented the dining very nicely. I also liked the decorations around the place. The decorations add to the ambience and the experience. There is nothing I know of anywhere near where I live in Colorado.

Drove from North Charleston to Mount Pleasant, got in the drive thru and went up to the window to pay just to hear: No ribs. Which happened to be my order. Waste of gas, waste of time, and huge disappointment. Had I been told this when we rolled up to order then I would’ve been less disappointed. We usually come here for good ribs and a good time, but to go and have neither is definitely a turn off for future visits.

My wife and I found this restaurant on Unilocal and decided to go after a day spent walking around the Magnolia Plantation. We had not previously tried mustard based barbecue sauce. The wife was skeptical, but is now a convert. Speaking of being a convert, this restaurant is a little heavy on the Jesus. A version of the 10 commandments is on the cups. That was amusing; what is not is the constant Christian rock. This is the kind of place where you want to eat and leave ASAP or the music might become overpowering. Despite the painful music, the employees manage to efficiently and politely take and prepare orders. I don’t know how they do it. I would require hearing protection. We each ordered the Carolina wet ribs. They were delicious. The wife liked the Mac and cheese and cole slaw sides. I had baked beans and onion rings, which had too much batter and were hard to eat, which trespass can be forgiven because this is some outstanding pig.

Melvin’s defines southern cooking. I’m going to make a bold statement: Melvin’s has the best BBQ in the world. Note, this applies to all of the Bessinger family restaurants(Bessinger’s, Maurice’s, Joe’s) because they all use the same recipe. I have to review on behalf of Melvin though, because being a Mt Pleasant gal, this is my closest location. The Bessinger family’s secret recipe is their sauce: the vinegar and mustard based delicacy. Fact: Sticky Fingers stole their recipe some years back but failed in replicating it. Always go with the BBQ sandwich because you cant go wrong here. Sides: mac & cheese and their green beans. and FRIES. ah i love their fries. they are large and always very salty. you also need to try at least one onion ring. also the PICKLEBAR! love being able to snack on pickles and peppers as I anxiously await my order. if you’ve left room, go for a milk shake.
