Would Unilocal please, please mark this restaurant CLOSED? It was replaced early 2011 by Ephesus at the same address. For some reason the«biz info» is left«locked,» so the CLOSED flag cannot be checked. That seems to be a weakness of existing UI software here. Still, I’ve sent biz-info flag messages at least once to Unilocal with no effect. But Thaiphoon keeps surfacing inappropriately as a downtown Mountain View restaurant.

I really like this place. The food is solid, really solid, and the atmosphere is relaxing. My husband and I get the complete meal deal where you can choose a soup and a couple other things that mix and match. I LOVE this. We leave feeling very full. It feels like the best Thai place in Mountain View in terms of value for money. I also feel like it is the best Thai food in Mountain View. I like Amarin, across the street, but the food there is more Chinese-y, more expensive, and more hit or miss. Also Amarin is always really loud during dinner and has a cramped atmosphere. BUT – We went to go to Thaiphoon this past Saturday night — it looked closed. ??? I wonder if just few people tried it and they didn’t do well?

Not impressed. Ginger garlic chx totally meh. Didn’t make hot as requested. Pad Thai had more heat, WTF? Wifey had sweet and sour chicken. She requested medium. No bueno. Service was ok. Décor is nice. Just too many other better options on Castro to choose from.

I’ve only had an appetizer and soup here. The Egg Roll Samosa was an Indian-style fried rolls, filled w/potatoes, peas & curry seasoning, served with peanut sauce. It was good but very heavy. I also had a bowl of Tom Kha Puck with assorted vegetables. The soup was decent but what a tiny bowl!

My co workers and I came here when it first opened. The decoration is very nice. Modern. Cute. The service is pretty good, considering it was lunch time. She was nice, checked on us, and filled out waters all the time. Food was pretty good. No MSG so that is a plus, which means no food coma when I go back to the office. I really liked the pad thai there. So good, that I finished it all. My friend ordered the grilled chicken, which was good, until we saw a dead fly. Gross! I know it’s not their fault but ughh! I’d still go back though.

I’ve been here several times already but I guess b/c I’ve been to their Palo Alto location to compare, this place doesn’t cut it quite the same. Their Chicken Pad Thai is okay — the taste just doesn’t pop out for me. Service is very slow. Although friendly and courteous, their staff just can’t seem to handle the hussle and bussle of lunch hour busy-ness quite as efficient and smooth as the Palo Alto location. Me and my group were one of the first to enter the restaurant and I went to their restroom only to be out of paper towels. I’ve given this place a try several times in hopes something willl change my mind but I’m not coming back here anymore.

I loved the Chicken with Garlic and Thai Herbs dish. $ 9 for a fair amount of chicken that is flavorful but not smothered in salt or oil. The sauce in this dish is great for soaking up with rice(choice of white or brown). Prices at Thaiphoon are fair for Castro Street prices and seemed slightly cheaper than at one of the other Thai places across the street. Service was friendly and the décor is elegant. I came here at 8pm on a Tuesday and there were people at only 2 – 3 other tables. The food came out fast, maybe 5 minutes after I ordered.

Meh. I think I went here when I wasn’t feeling Thai-Foodish. Such sadness. I didn’t want to get the typical curry, pad thai, pad se ew, pineapple fried rice. LOL! So i settled and got a Chinese dish !! BOOM! I got the sweet and sour pork that wasn’t that good. :(But I love the atmosphere. it’s calming. I checked out the restrooms. not that amazing as everyone on Unilocal says it is!

You know, this place is good. The food was good but somewhat more saucy for my taste. Ambiance and service was good. Everything is good. Nothing exciting and compelling to pull me back in but overall, good. I agree with the previous posts, nothing adventurous but«good.» If you’re craving for Thai, you won’t be disappointed here.

3.5 stars. I ordered Thai Basil Chicken for lunch as a take out order over the phone. 10 minutes later, I arrive, only to realize that I had placed the order with the Palo Alto restaurant(doh!) The server was super nice — he canceled my order for me with PA and quickly proceeded to tell the kitchen to make my food. While I waited, I sat at the bar. The place is nicely decorated(much cleaner and more modern than the Palo Alto location). The waiter asked me if I’d like a glass of water while I waited. This earn them extra points! My food came out in a box in under 10 minutes. It was also under $ 10. it was flavorful but I wish there were more basil in it. It was tasty but nothing out of the ordinary. The amount of food was just right. I would come back here again but with all the competition on Castro St, they need to really step it up to make a difference.

Wish I was back up in San Jo eating Thaiphoon on my lunch break instead of sitting at my desk with a crappy baked potato from BJ’s. Woe is me. Is there anything better than hot steamy Thai food on a cold rainy day? Maybe, but this tops my list for now. We started out with some lettuce wraps and tom yum goong… man oh man did that soup really hit the spot. I was ready to fight my uncle for the last ladle-full in the pot.(Lucky for him, I got distracted by the entrees). The chicken pad thai was absolutely delicious, as was the panang tofu curry. Oh my god, the tofu curry. I have to find the recipe. This was just one of those meals that felt like it ended too soon. The service was great, the waiter even serves the soup to you bowl by bowl. The food came out quickly and piping hot, and we ate at a calm pace, but were still in and out of there within half an hour. The complimentary candies are yummy, too. Be sure to grab a handful(or five) on your way out!

I wonder why the reviews here are so low. Maybe I didn’t try enough dishes. I had the roti prata which was quite tasty and had the coconut curry soup with brown rice which I thought was really delicious. I would come back!

My boy took me to lunch, another beautiful day in downtown Mountain View. We met up with his cousin and I was surprised that this was such a lovely spot with good food. It’s a small store front, you could almost pass it and not see how lovely the inside is. Walking inside there is a tiny spot for you too wait to be seated and upon inspection only about 15 tables. It’s a small restaurant but the décor is beautiful. Trendy/chic/modern is the feel — very clean, clean lines, neatly decorated walls and an overall warm but coolly modern feel. All the small touches, the rich colors, to the red hallway you walk down to the restrooms — it is all perfect décor. From romantic, to party, to family, to friends — it’s a great spot as far as location and ambiance. The food is good, it’s not great. We all ordered the chicken satay to start. Five fair pieces, slightly dry and with a peanut sauce that was a tad thin for my taste. It came with a small cucumber salad that was pleasantly marinaded and refreshing. I ordered a panang chicken curry for lunch. It came with a light, ok vegitarian soup. Though a nice start it isn’t memorable and I can’t remember really what was in it besides tofu. My main dish was good, the sauce fairly sweet, the vegetables very fresh and a tad too crisp for me and the chicken fairly standard. The curry itself was pretty good but not great. It also came with salad with miso dressing, fresh crisp lettuce, tomato and a hard boiled egg — pretty good. You can also choose between brown or white jasmine rice. I tried the other dishes which were pretty good as well but not great. While I would come again as the service was excellent and friendly, the ambiance perfect and the food good and quite a bit for the moderate price. A lovely find in downtown Mountain View.

Ended up here a few weeks ago after an indecisive bout. Was pleasantly surprised w/the food! I usually go to Amarin Thai across the street but lately the quality has been sub par. We both had the tom yum soup for starters and I had the chicken fried rice for my entrée. Décor was nice, service was good and prices were decent. My new Thai resto of choice in MV.

We went here for dinner Mon 2÷22÷10. Place was pretty empty, only 3 other tables during the hour that we were there. This is a new location for them — other locations in Palo Alto, & also Siam Thai Cuisine in SJ. Things we got: P. got a glass a wine — he liked it fine Roti & curry sauce $ 6.50-but if u get a glass of wine during Happy hr + appetizer save $ 2. Very small, just ok. Curry sauce had some peppers in it. Roasted duck curry $ 9.50. Roasted duck red curry w/tomatoes, eggplant, pineapple & sweet basil. Asked for really hot & got mild. Got a combo dinner for $ 4.50 more which includes a Thai salad w/peanut dressing, soup — small cup which was salty, brown or white rice. Got brown — just ok for me, good for fiber the next day. Pork w/Thai Basil $ 8.95 + $ 4.50 for combo dinner. Pork was dry, dry, dry. Skip this dish. I had a coupon $ 10 off w/$ 35 minimum purchase, otherwise I’d have never tried it. One unisex bathroom in the back.

This place is really cute! The décor was really nice, service was friendly and quick enough, and the food was fine. We had basil beef, sweet and sour chicken, imperial chicken, and pad thai. The basil beef was delicious. The sweet and sour chicken was fine(like sweet and sour chicken always is, except not breaded or fried). I think the imperial chicken was a little bland. The pad thai was a little weird. The table next to us had a curry that looked amazing, and I wished I’d been with more adventurous eaters, or at least people who wanted to eat Thai dishes.

One of those places where the décor says«wow» and the food says«yawn.» Though it is far from terrible either, as some recent posts would have you believe. DECOR: nice artwork; good lighting; modern furniture in dark wood; good vibe SERVICE was very friendly but slightly on the slow side, based on my two lunchtime visits. FOOD that I’ve tried here at lunchtime: – Green curry veggies:($ 8.25) came with soup, salad, and one split, hard-boiled egg covered in dressing.(huh?) Included very tasty brown rice at no add’l cost — a nice touch. I would’ve preferred tofu with a firmer texture; sauce lacked something, and portion was a bit small. 3 stars. – Panang Curry Chicken:($ 8.50) same config as my previous meal, with egg and salad. Portion was OK, but chicken was slightly tough and the sauce lacked«punch». The brown rice seemed a little drier this time too. Panang sauce is one of my favorites, and usually when I eat it there is a «gawd this is good!» moment. That moment never happened. 2.5 stars Food is 80% of the score for me, so 3 stars.

I came here during their grand opening, and thought the deals were too good to miss. However, the«get half-off on appetizers» had a catch that was not mentioned to my friends and me until we got our bill — apparently, you had to have ordered alcoholic drinks to get this offer. Not knowing this earlier, or from reading the signs outside, the experience was quite disappointing. Aside from a deceiving deal, the food was decent, didn’t seem to have the same quality as the Palo Alto location. Also, the service was not as great, the employees seemed to communicate poorly with us, which was also another disappointment. Castro is known for great restaurants, and there are plenty of other Thai restaurants on the street. If I were to go to Thaiphoon again, I’d probably stick with the Palo Alto one.

Wow there are a lot of Thai places on this one little street in Mountain View. My friend suggested this place since they also have another location in Palo Alto that got pretty good reviews. For a new place I was pretty shocked to see it so empty on a Saturday night. But then again there was 5 – 8 Thai restaurants in a span of a block so I figured it was still too new to bring in the crowds. I ordered what I usually order which is the green curry with a Thai ice tea. I ordered it medium hoping to add in the jalapenos and spices to make it to my liking. When I got my dish, I was disappointed in the serving size. Tasted my curry and it was just okay. Really didn’t have enough flavor and they didn’t have my jalepenos that I like to make it more spicy. Place wasn’t bad but it wasn’t great. Nothing great enough to really make me come back here when there are tons of options in the same area.

In the old Xanh space, Thaiphoon in Palo Alto has expanded into Mountain View. Add one more choice in what I call the«Thai Mafia» block of Castro Street. They’ve kept the former spaces elegant, dark, modern touches and have added some Thai art to complete the feel. Definitely an attractive space. Service is really friendly, with multiple servers checking on me throughout my meal. Good duck red curry with eggplany, pineapple, bell peppers and a solid roti appetizer. Maybe a tad expensive for the portion you get but I was comfortably full when I left. There’s probably some subsidizing for the very nice ambiance. Looking forward to coming back with the co workers to get a large family style meal in.
