Love this place! I have never came to Murphys without wine tasting here! This lady is so awesome! I have enjoyed every tasting I have ever had!

Chiarella’s tasting room is a small spot near the Motorcycle Company Shop, about a half block from the hotel and in the center of town. The servers are always pleasant, and knowledgable, without pretensions. There are more than 25 tasting rooms in and around Murphys and this wine is always in my top five picks, specifically for the reds. Nathan, the wine maker, is present often and can answer any question you have about how and when and where the wine was made. My favorite is the Barbera, which varies a bit from year to year but is always good, lush flavor without being overwhelming. I like it with red meats, but it also good just for a drink before dinner. The shop has a few Italian-themed gifts, and on big weekends they often have local musicians. Good ambience. But it is the reds that bring me back over the years since they have opened.

Friendly very knowledgable and not pushy. Wines and vineyards fully explained. Low sulfite Italian style wines. All lovely reds. When the pourer noticed our interest she pulled some of her personal Barbera from behind the counter and sampled for us. Wine club is low key. Reallynenjoyed this tasting room.

Always have liked red wines, however they have not liked me… big headache the next day :-(Then I tried Chiarella wines! Oh my goodness! Amazing, full flavors and no headache! Small tasting room with Rebecca serving, like your friend for years ~ warm, comfortable and friendly. With so many tasting rooms to visit, you need to make Chiarella one of your first so your pallet is fresh and ready for the amazing Italian wines they create. Love the wines!

Well, this just goes to show that you should never buy wine at the last couple of wineries of the day; the wines always taste better when you’re buzzed and it’s easy to get caught up in the experience. In the past year, we consumed the four bottles that we purchased at Chiarella, and they were all dissapointing. I still have fond memories of our pourer, Rebecca, however. :)

I waited outside of this place for it to open, I never do that but the wines are that damn good. They have some really great Barberras and their Zin and Cab offerings are good too. The flavors are complex, and they change with each sip, which is frankly a wonder. The other great thing is they are relatively cheap, so it is the best of both worlds.

Chiarella is in a little room on Main St next to the Murphys Motorcycle Shop. They have one white and several reds to try. The white is a Pinot Grigio that happens to be sparkling by accident! Turns out that the winemaker made it unfiltered, and the sediment undergoes a second fermentation… funny! It’s quite good. Their reds are done very well, particularly the Sangiovese. Since I’m not really much of a red drinker however, I’ll let my husband review that on his own Unilocal.:D Fun little gift shop in the tasting room, and friendly service from the lady behind the bar… we did end up joining the quarterly wine club(great discount for members — 25% off!!).

I wrote this review a long time ago, like, in 2008. This winery tasting room has moved to Murphy’s. See Karen G’s review on it. As for my opinion??? This is some of the finest wine that i have ever tasted. Every time I come to this tasting room I spend at least $ 100.00. Nathan is one of the finest wine makers I have ever come in contact with. I would recommend his wine and have recommended his wine to everyone I know. His whites are superb, and his reds are Superior to any other winery in the area. Nathan has now moved his tasting room to Murphys close to Frogs Tooth. Stop in and say hi to Nathan or his wife. Let them pour you some of the finest wine you will ever taste.

Chiarella Wines was our second stop on our whirlwind tasting tour of newer wineries in Murphys. I heard about the wonderful wines from Chiarella from Charlie O. He really likes the tasting room in Angels Camp which is the original location. I was really pleased to learn that a tasting room opened in downtown Murphys. It is a great location for tasting rooms because of the frequent visitors to the area. The room itself is super tiny, but very quaint. They sell a few Italian themed shirts which were a nice touch. The lady who was pouring was very friendly. I later learned that she is the owner’s wife. Way to keep it in the family! I am not a white wine person, but I decided to sample the full tasting offerings. I have to say that I loved every single wine she poured, even the whites! They were so smooth and not at all acidic which I appreciated. We didn’t purchase any wines at first because we had a few more stops to make and didn’t want to be burdened with carrying the bottles. We made it a point to stop by on our way home and purchased our selections. Here is an interesting fact: did you know that Murphys has over 20 wineries in the downtown area? It’s true! Murphys has become quite the wine lovers destination! ;)
