The menu is vast enough to satisfy a variety of tastes, prepared with care, healthy portions and not overpriced. Lovely staff, and pleasant environment.

First in line waiting for the place to open at 5, small party of 8 l, was told can’t be seated cause they have 6 parties already book. Place is small, seven 4 chair tables. And three couple tables. Don’t plan on just showing up before there open for a table. The owner needs to take an ex amount of reservations and leave room for

This place has been a great addition to NC! We’ve had wings, meatloaf, fried chicken, salad, and soups. I prefer a bit more seasoning, but overall a wonderful place to dine.

Great food and service. My wife and I shared the fried chicken and the mac & cheese. The chicken was moist and tasty and the mac & cheese was just the right strength of cheddar. The service was prompt and friendly without being intrusive. Prices are reasonable too.

Wow… What a wonderful discovery!!! We love Bistro 221!!! We had grilled salmon with one of the most delicious rice pilaf dishes ever. It was served with a nice assortment of freshly grilled veggies. We also tried their meat loaf — such a nice change it was topped with a béchamel sauce and a red sauce. We started with house salads and clam chowder — both delicious. I was most impressed by their gluten and dairy free options for many of their dishes … Even gluten free beer(OMission)!!! A sweet picture of the owner and her daughter(waitress)! Another plus — they loved our well behaved little one!

I had planned on getting the fried chicken as my friend raved about it but the specials all sounded so amazing we went another way. I had butternut squash rissoto with shrimp and my friend had the short ribs. Both dishes were excellent. Service was very friendly and good although perhaps a tad slow at times but nothing to complain about. We did have a reservation which I would recommend on the weekend. All and all a wonderful restaurant.

Place was super cute. Great service. Menu had a ton of items I wanted to try. I had the meatloaf and my husband had the rib eye; both were excellent. Prices were good. Can’t wait to come back!

You know a great chef is in the house when the sides accompanying a delicious dinner out do the main course. The buttermilk chicken is delicious, the parsnip potatoes and greens are the best I’ve ever had. And we live in downtown Sac, with hordes of great restaurants.

My wife and I dined here on a Friday night, while traveling one weekend. While the meat loaf was a real treat, the braised short ribs served on a goat cheese polenta was absolutely in a different class of its own. Rich, complex and Sublime… Paired with a glass of local red made it a memory we’ll not soon forget. Did i mention that the folks In the front of the house were wonderful and attentive? Yeah, I just did.

While in Nevada City, was looking for a place for dinner, and found Bistro 221 on Unilocal, and the mentioned of «fried chicken,» I was sold. Went across the street to the Mineshaft for a few cocktails before the Bistro re-opened at 5. The bartender, Kelly, at the Mineshaft was wonderful btw.(It was nice too, because I ventured into another bar on the other street and I got a contact high as soon as I walked in and immediately out. «When in Rome,» but this guy does not partake.) Chicken and fixins were great! And an OMG to their clam chowder! Who knew the best chowder in Cali was in Nevada City?! My wife had the mac and cheese and loved it, but didn’t eat much cause she was full. Great little place, great service, and wonderful food.

Being originally from the southeast, a southerner by birthright, I could not pass up the opportunity to eat at Bistro 221. They artistically carry the flavors of the south to California, with pork-flavored greens, exquisite fried chicken and decadent mashed potatoes and gravy. I really don’t eat fried chicken much these days, but it is a pleasure from my past, AND Bistro uses Mary’s free range chicken(awesome), so I decide to give it a taste. And I’m so glad I did. Bistro chefs pin the flavors of true southern fried chicken. So if you like chicken, this is a must! At the bottom of the dinner menu, it reads, produce sourced locally. Thank you, Bistro 221. Going local is sustainable, good for the environment and helps to bring money to the local communities. And this community in and around Nevada city is a charm. I only wish I read about them choosing organic produce too. As for the ambiance here, there are candles on the tables that emit a softly romantic glow. The old brick showing along one long wall is completely charming. And the tables are covered with cloth, topped with quality paper coverings, which looks very nice. Great date night. And as others have said, the service is on point.

Omg omg omg, I’ve finally found some goooooood fried chicken in northern CA! We(stupidly) waited over an hour last weekend in San Francisco for supposedly the best southern food there, and their fried chicken wasn’t half this good. I’ve been searching far and wide for the past few years, and this place takes the cake! Their sides were also delicious and the waitress was quite nice. Get the fried chicken, you won’t regret it! Sincerely, A southern girl who knows her fried chicken

Always great food and great service. It’s nice having the owner there, she seems to really care. I ordered the meatloaf for the first time. I didn’t look that close at the description and expected a traditional meatloaf. I was pleasantly surprised. The best meatloaf ever. Made with layers of ground beef and potatoes and zucchini. And a wonderful sauce. Try it, you’ll love it!

I would move to this town just to eat at this restaurant every day. Everything. EVERYTHING was AMAZING. The food and service were through the roof! I was excited with the menu but when the server read the specials — I wanted to go back in the kitchen and meet the chef! The servers and workers acted like it was their first day of work — eager to please and do things right — yet nobody was new — the server just explained that they loved their job. The salad was by far the healthiest and the most delicious salad I had ever had. Perfect. The owner greets everyone and this place is magical. Thank you Unilocal for getting me here.

Great place for lunch. They had a Zinfandel from Lodi(OZV) that was delightful. It paired nicely with the pasta we had. Fresh and not too heavy on the sauce — nice lite olive oil and garlic. The atmosphere was quaint and the staff were both friendly and helpful. I plan on eating their again next time I am in town.

Not impressed. I wouldn’t go out of my way; however, I would come back if prompted and try something else. Overpriced average tasting food… The fish n chips were bland and the batter was kind of soggy inside. The gnocchi was chewy and reminded me of tortellini, which I like, but not what gnocchi is supposed to be. The cheeseburger was good and something I would order again. I was really disgusted by the water though! It tasted like it came out of a rusty pipe… Yuck! We only waited 30min for our food, which I’d expect on a Saturday night. The staff weren’t particularly happy to serve you. I’d say they were tired and complacent… Not rude, just not invested? I can’t say I’d recommend Bistro 221. :(

Heard the story about how this place opened and the story itself is pretty awesome… I leave that to ya’ll to find out when you try this place out. We stopped by during work for lunch and their food is BOMB!!! I ordered a basic cheese burger but this sucker had a soft bun, grilled onions and a juicy patty. Fries, well I’m a sucker so any French fries order is amazing. Also ate a house salad with lemon dressing… that was refreshing and leaving wanting more. Give this place a try, you won’t be disappointed. The waitress and hostess that greeted us were sweet lady’s. We’ll be back for sure.

This place has the most amazing food i have ever had in a long long time! I feel like a spoiled brat after eating here. My boyfriend and i came here because we were staying next door at the cool national hotel. We walked around this cute night lite up town looking for a good place to eat, and the smell of this place brought us to the bistro . I ordered the skirt steak, and my man got a regular steak. The meat was mouth watering and the seasoning was so good. The sides were amazing. They made a crazy version of potatoes gratin but with sliced fried potatoes and gooey cheesy goodness, and the creamed spinach was so good . I often think about driving all the way up here just to eat at this place again. Dear bistro thanks for spoiling me :)
