This review is for the disc golf course, although I’m not sure what else they have here outside of the soapbox derby in September. I’ve been here quite a bit over the last summer, and even though it’s not my home course, it’s not much farther away so I take advantage of it. It’s literally a few blocks from an I-43 exit, so traveling disc golfers take heed as this might be an easy one to add to your road trip. Speaking of easy, this course is one of the few courses that doesn’t make me want to douse my head in gasoline and set it on fire after 18 holes. It’s a Par 3 course with short pin placements. But before you dismiss it as just another thrown together course in some park that nobody uses, keep in mind that while it’s short, at the same time it’s very technical. More than a handful of the 18 holes here are in wooded areas so you’ll have to thread a lot of shots to birdie or ace. It’s a good way to get beginners like me to try different shots and it keeps a certain(albeit somewhat low) degree of difficulty for veterans of the game. If you’re from around here, think of it like the Estabrook Park course, only less wacky and more scenic. Yes, this course is scenic as f*ck, from it’s cool downhill Hole 1 shot to the trees in the middle of the course, this is a beautiful course, outside of a couple litterbugs and crappy graffiti artists. Keep it clean, guys! This is a beautiful course! It took me a while to figure out the course layout, and when I finally do, they have a soapbox derby and change up the whole thing on me! My buddy and I played today and we were lucky enough to have some locals play behind us and lead us through because nothing was signed! They explained to us that this was the«winter layout». I did enjoy the course since it did go deeper into the woods, but it was still very confusing and somehow we managed to miss a hole. This place could use better signage for the summer and winter course, but then again, this seems to be a problem for most courses around here. Also, most of the disc golf people I’ve encountered over the last five months have been awesome. I’ve had people give me tips, give me praise when I do good and reassurance when I do bad, heck, I’ve even had guys invite me to play rounds with them, and while I have meet more than enough nice folks here, I’ve also come across some of the rudest disc golfers here. For example, we were heading out and my buddy had a date coming over for dinner so he wanted to make a quick beer run. He asked a couple locals if the gas stations in the area sold beer, and they looked at us like we were two 10 year olds asking. We are very noticeably in our 30’s and we waited about a minute before one of the guys said«ummm…yeah…». Ok dude, whatever. Rumor is that the caretaker of this golf course comes here on Monday nights and sells discs on the cheap. I intend to head out here one Monday to see if this is true. Very much worth playing a round or two here.
