The hodle has recently gotten new bar and kitchen staff &WOW what an improvement! Wings have amazing choice of sauces now,(yes, ACTUAL buffalo sauce), and the bar staff is super friendly & attentive. The menu is also a lot more diverse & unique than it has been in the past. Beer selection & liquor selection is surprisingly amazing. During summer months they have $ 1 crab night on Wednesdays that uses some of the best made crabs in the MD region. The outside space is really relaxing and the twinkle lights adds a nice ambiance to the place. I’m really happy with all the improvements this adorable little town bar has made!

My wife and I were on a bike ride passing thru New Freedom and noticed the Hodle tavern open sign on and decided this would be a nice place to stop and have a beer on our way back thru New Freedom. I gave them one star because they didn’t serve me because they were closed even though open sign was on and front door open. Employee told me they were closed and will open in 25 minutes. I told her that the open sign was on and she was surprised the front door was open. I asked if we could have a beer even though she said they were closed. She said no. They had a chance and will never have an opportunity again to serve me.

This is a fun place to go to that is local in New Freedom and has great priced drinks. It’s not fancy very very casual and has the usual bar foods. They also have a pool table and a modern juke box. On the evening I went when you go on the patio outside their is a food truck parked that has really good food.

Updating this review to four stars since the got rid of indoor smoking(smoking still allowed on patios). I know I said I’d give them five if they did, but they also revamped their food menu and honestly it’s just not very good. The menu changed so much we thought there might be new owners. They’re really pushing burritos now and honestly they’re really not that good. Especially in an area where your clientele are used to places like Roburrittos and Mexitaly. So +2 stars for no smoking, –1 star for menu revamp.

I love this place and its part in the Pennsylvania RailRoad’s civil war history. Plus I can bring my Doberman along to sit out back with me! I recently moved down to New Freedom and love the town and this tavern. I have always had good food and the staff is very nice. It has become a regular hangout on the weekends and a perfect stop after a hike on the trail :)

The Hodle is right off the rail trail in New Freedom. New Freedom is not a big place, so it is hard to miss. I’m not sure why, but I love the Hodle. I’ve never even eaten here, but something just seems right. Smoking is allowed, but I’ve never been overwhelmed by it here. I have to admit, I’ve never been here when it was busy. The one thing about this place that I know makes me happy is they carry both Hypnotiq and Hennessy. I love Hypnotiq and Hennessy(Incredible Hulk) and this is one of the few places(that I will go) in the York area that you will find with both liquors. Maybe that is what keeps me coming back. If you find yourself thirsty in New Freedom, definitely check it out!

Here is one of those places that I wish Urbanspoon had a 50⁄50 like button. Cause I am on the fence about this place. I voted Like for now, cause I really want to like it. Mainly cause we had a bad first time there. Also for the record, this isn’t the place it used to be! I remember growing up in the early 80s when my dad and his friends would go here. It was a rowdy place back then. Not so much anymore, quite a younger friendly crowd. We stop in one night after taking the dog for a walk on the rail trail(yes, you are allowed to have your dog there. Just have to sit outside). I went inside to see about getting a server to take our order and was told by the bartender that there wasn’t any, that he was the only one working. Umm ok, I ordered our beers and took the menu back outside. We decided on a Chicken Sandwich for myself and Danielle a Reuben. Back inside to order and grab another beer. Thankfully the bartender brought us the food. My chicken sandwich was ok, the lettuce was kinda old. Dani’s Reuben was just horrible. The meat was slimy and had that purple color that old meat starts to get. She really didn’t want to make a fuss about it, but it looked really bad. She complained and the owner/manager came out to apologize to us. He said the chef had bought the meat fresh the day before(I highly doubt that), but agreed it looked bad. He took it back and gave her a free order of hot wings. Told us he’d comp all but the beer, which was cool with me. We said we’d go back and try again and we may at some point. Besides the food issue, I didn’t like that they didn’t have a server for outside, could have been just that day. I refuse to eat or drink inside, as its a place that elected to allow smoking inside. And there is no air flow in there. Oh and either they have no AC or it was broken, cause it was hot as you know what inside! Hmmm, maybe I should change my vote to dislike. Nah, I’ll give it a chance.

My local spot… great food, great atmosphere. Owners are very involved and will stop to talk and see how the regulars are. Live music can get a little loud but all in all an awesome place to be around Southern York County
