On a trip to New Glarus to check out the brewery, we came upon New Glarus the town. We had no idea how adorable this little Swiss town was! It’s like walking down the road in Switzerland in the town center. And right smack dab in the middle of it is Glarner Stube. Glarner Stube is the quintessential hometown restaurant. We were there right before Christmas and it was decked out in holiday décor providing an uplifting atmosphere. Our server was super forgetful… not remembering dishes, that we needed silverware, a couple other small things. But she was so nice and personable, that we overlooked any shortcomings she may have had. We tried many deep fried and indulgent Wisconsin-esque items and all of them were good. Their Roesti(Swiss Fried Potatoes) was a huge and filling portion with great flavor. A friend and I shared the Flank Steak Sandwich, marinated with olive oil, lemon and garlic served on a hoagie roll. Filled us up well and again tasted delicious. Now the cheese curds… ummmm those were amazing! Beer battered and deep fried just as they should be with cheddar cheese. We also did the cheese fondue served bubbling with swiss cheese, wine, garlic and kirsch. They bring a heater out to your table to keep it going! The fondue is served with bread which is always a good accompaniment but I would have loved some more dipping options… things like apples, sausages, cauliflower, pretzels? Some variety would have been good. Aside from the food, the beer options were awesome. Of course they have New Glarus beer on tap and MANY options. More than the brewery. Way more than the brewery. And cheaper. And in different sizes. Honestly, I liked going to the brewery to see the grounds but for actually tasting the beer, Glarner Stube beats the brewery by a mile! Pro Tip: Go check out the brewery first and you’ll get a coupon for a free beer when you go to Glarner Stube. I believe you need to order a flight to get this coupon. We were all so incredibly full from this feast, we waddled out like a quartet of potbelly pigs. If you’re in this quaint little Wisconsin town, I highly recommend stopping in for an indulgent meal topped off with a plethora of New Glarus beers.

Atmosphere –check! Swiss feel — check! Great food — check! Service — not exactly. This place has all the charm of a Swiss chalet. They don’t take reservations on weekends so plan on arriving early or waiting a long time. For starters we had the fondu and cheese curds. Both are excellent! The curds have a thick tempura coating which added pizazz! My wife and I shared the wiener schnitzle and baked cod. Schnitzle was good and the cod was a bit bland but otherwise a good piece of fish. Service at the bar was good before our meal but the server seemed over worked, confused and generally trying to get us out the door. In New Glarus? You have to give this place a try!

Second time visiting the Glarner Stube today and it was a great experience again! We started off with two New Glarus draft beers — Scream IIPA and Coffee Stout. For lunch we ordered the pork schnitzel sandwiches. My fiancé got fries as a side and I got roesti(delicious fried potatoes with cheese). The meal quite honestly made me want to drool. You must try the roesti! I really enjoyed the atmosphere sitting at the bar — so comfy, warm and inviting! This is a can’t miss in New Glarus.

I’ve been to Glarner Stube 20 times over the past 20 years. Time to review it. Went there last February with family. I’m 100 miles away, my family is 250 miles away. W made the trip just to eat here. The restaurant was closed for the season. I wrote the owner a note about updating their web site and Unilocal when they are closed. Both said they were open. I appreciated the answer but was still pissed to show up in the snow to find them closed. I went back yesterday and they redeemed themselves. My wife had the schitzel and I had the kalberwurst. Both were great. I especially appreciated the side of fresh green beans. However, and I can’t stress enough, that the roesti is their best offering. Shredded potatoes with onions, stuffed with Swiss cheese fried to a golden brown in tons of butter. This would taste great on flip flop. I’ve tried for years to duplicate the recipe; I’ve come very close, but I’m not there yet. The service is great, the atmosphere is fantastic and the food is wonderful. I will drive the 100 miles again and again. The entire experience is worth it. Special secret, they boast the worlds largest urinal in the men’s room. Really! I’ve got the pictures to prove. It. You can’t go wrong at the Glane Stube, just be sure to order something that is authentic Swiss. You can get the other stuff somewhere else. Love this place.

Not only is this place adorable, the food and service are excellent. Highly recommend the bratwurst and sauerkraut(with a healthy dose of mustard).

Kind of cramped and not that clean. The food makes it worthwhile though. Also the good spread of craft brews. Will definitely come back to this place!

It’s places like this I miss from when I lived in Wisconsin. Glarner Stube is that wonderful small town bar with friendly service, great food and friendly patrons who engage with you even though you are not from their town. We walked in after a tour at the nearby New Glarus Brewing Company, and were seated promptly in the back. Now if you are a Bears or Cubs fan and are wearing your team colors, BEWARE! There is a small sign thumbtacked to the wall up front that says there is «special seating for Illinois fans», but know the second part of that sign says it’s out by the dumpster! Ha! Had us laughing from the moment we walked in and it had my friend quickly removing his cap. We were definitely in Wisconsin! Our server, Rosie, was delightful! She took our order(cheese, cheese, and more cheese!) and quickly brought our drinks. While the menu has plenty of things on it besides cheese(like there was a pork loin and potato special of the day for a very reasonable price, bratwurst, steaks, chicken, etc) we wanted heavy snacks so we ended up with fried cheese curds(a little too much breading for our group but tasty nonetheless) the cheese fondue(quite tasty with plenty of bread for dipping) roesti, a sort of hash brown dish(wonderful) and the meat and cheese plate(also good). The beer was cold and drinks well poured. The table next to us started talking to us to tell us about other brewery and distillery tours we should do in Wisconsin. And at some point, our server actually pulled up a chair and sat down and visited with us! Love that(especially since she was just the kind of person you would love to have at your table!) As we were leaving, the front bar area was packed with locals and they said actually said good bye to us and told us we were so nice they would make an exception to their Illinois team seating«rule». Loved the spirit of this place! Great food, better service all served up in a wonderful small town bar. Glarner Stube scored big points with me!

We started our meal with the cheese curds, which were excellent. Enough to feed 4 – 5 people. My wife had the steak sandwich, which was salty, slightly greasy and a bit fatty in spots. Her side was the Roesti, which we were excited to have. Sadly, it disappointed. It was VERY greasy. Such a shame, as I mentioned, we were really excited to have. I had the pork schnitzel sandwich, which was excellent. I ordered the side of the Roesti, which never did arrive(thankfully). My wife and I discussed and came to the conclusion that the waitress believed I said I would share the Roesti with my wife. I said«I will also have the Roesti.» I was charged the $ 3 for it but because how bad hers was, it’s ok. Happy to do without. The beers were good, but not as cold as I would like. I would give them a second chance, if we head up that way, some day.

First of all, if you have an army that you need to feed, this is the place to come. We started with the fondue, which is probably more than a pound of cheese. We just expected this to be an appetizer, but it could have been a meal for at least three or four people. One recommendation is that they change it so that there are different size fondues for different size parties – that way they could include other food like potatoes and such instead of just bread. However, it was delicious. A nice tang of brandy rounded out the cheese flavor. After the gigantic appetizer arrived, our entrees came out. I got the wedge salad which was fresh and delicious. The hubs had the brat, which was gigantic and tasty, and a side of rosti. Imagine rosti as a delicious hash-brown, but at Glarner Stube they up the ante by adding cheese in the middle. The food is really inexpensive for the quality and amount, and the beer is pretty cheap too. They have all of the New Glarus beers, and even one or two that weren’t on tap at the brewery. Definitely check it out when you’re in New Glarus.

Great Swiss cuisine… The hash browns the red cabbage the curds oh my! It’s a bit dark and tables close, a little loud, but look around at the history of this building. The food was great, totally fattening but you don’t eat it all the time.

Glarner Stube’s cheese curds are the crème de la crème of all cheese curds. No, better yet, if their cheese curds were people they’d be the Playboy House Bunnies. These specific cheese curds are actually the best thing to ever happen to cheese curds everywhere. Now that I’ve tasted their greatness it would be blasphemous for me to ever express undying love for any other cheese curd on this planet. You make think that I’m crazy for going on and on and on about these cheese curds, but once you try them you shall know. Oh yes, you will know. As soon as the cheese curds come steaming out of the kitchen and placed in front of you, your eyes will be gleaming with envy and you dive into the overflowing cheesiness. Part of the reason I can only rave about the cheese curds is that they are the only thing that my fiancé and I ordered. We didn’t order any other food, 1) because we’d just filled up on beer from New Glarus Brewery prior to coming here and 2) we were in Wisconsin so it was only right that we’d order cheese curds as opposed to anything else, especially when we weren’t hungry anyways. Honestly, if you order the cheese curds you won’t go away starving because they are hugggggeeee and completely filled with cheesy cheesiness. Besides the cheese curds(which I’ve talked about more than enough) my fiancé and I each tried one of the Swiss beers that they had in bottles. The beers were pretty yeasty and pretty damn good. If you don’t want beer in bottles then don’t worry — they have plenty of New Glarus beer on tap, all for about $ 5. I believe that they had some of the basic brews like Moon Man, Spotted Cow and Two Women so whatever your taste pallet is thirsty for they will most likely have it. Besides the food and beer which I could review for forever and a day(as you must all know by now) the bar was small and quaint with the right amount of charm. The wooden panels on the inside made for a very cozy ambience while sipping our beers and talking to the other folks from Chicago who also came to enjoy a drink in Little Switzerland. Just as the restaurant is tiny, you can imagine that the bathrooms are also tiny. Aside from the inside of the restaurant — let me give you a visual of the outside of Glarner Stube. It’s in the town square so it’s right by the Swiss bakery, cheese shop and other boutiques that make Little Switzerland the gem that it is. You should definitely take a walk around the town once you’re done enjoying your beer and cheese curds!

We enjoyed a late Summer Sunday drive to New Glarus. A highlight was our lunch at Glarner Stube. The Brew, Curds, Brats and service were outstanding!

Nice place, though a bit quiet for a Wednesday lunch. Had cheese curds and cured meat plate which went well with the local beer. The curds were pretty good the meat a bit dry and bland. My son had brisket which was a healthy slab. Overall good fair with huge portions if you appreciate such things. I’d go back for beer.

Go hungry, leave stuffed and with leftovers. What a cute place! We sat in the back and had a great time here. Our waitress was really sweet and we started off with a yummy cheese plate that was quite big to go along with our beers. I had the prime rib(the 20oz mind you) with yummy sides. There was so much food. Everything was so tasty. I’m a proud member of the clean plate club, but even I couldn’t finish it. Fortunately our hotel had a mini-fridge. Great service, very nice people, well located in town. Would definitely go back.

On Saturday I visited the New Glarus Brewery in New Glarus Wisconsin. With the purchase of my first pint of beer, I received a complementary New Glarus pint glass and a gift certificate for a free glass of beer at one of like 5 local restaurants. Not being familiar with the area, my friend asked the beer wench for a suggestion. She directed us to Glarner Stube. As you can probably guess by the single star, I hated this place. In all fairness it was popular with the flies, they were in abundance. Ba peek at the window cill told me that this place was so popular with bugs, some decided that want to make it their final resting place. I ordered a stake sandwich with blue cheese sauce and mashed potatoes. I would have been more satisfied if I would have just dipped my $ 10 bill into the blue cheese sauce. The stake was pure garbage. Comparing it to the tongue of tennis shoe would be an insult to tennis shoes. The mashed potatoes weren’t mashed and might not have even been potatoes. My friend had a brat and kraut. He said it was delicious.

Loved. Great service and great food. Got there in a cold Saturday afternoon and sat right down. Had a cold NG fat squirrel on tap right away as we paired it with some cheddar cheese curds with an Asian beer batter. Then we had the fonduded beef which was really good(although somewhat chewy) with horseradish cream sauce that came with a Roesti potato and cheese cake. The best was a pork schnitzel sandwich that was so tender and juicy(add the horseradish sauce and it’s even better). We had a great time. Would give this 5 stars but felt like prices were a bit high for what we had. Would come back though.

How have I not recorded a review for the Glarner Stube? I’ve been here at least half-a-dozen times… well, let’s give this a try: + Good selection of New Glarus taps; available in 5oz or pint pours + Full bar; drinks mixed well + Drinks are reasonably priced + Friendly staff — I seem to see the same staff with every visit — Smallish bar area; gets chilly in winter months(no double door) I’ve only had a few appetizers, and they were decent. Can’t comment on the main dishes, although they look to be a tad«heavy.»

Been here about 4 times don’t know why I never wrote a review for this place… Oh I know why there’s literally no cell service here I finally found the right person to ask for the wifi password. So really cute bar Swiss themed with a nice menu. I’ve had most of the same hitches today the perch sandwich with Swiss cheese of course. They have 6 new Glarus beers in Tao which is nice and a decent bar for cocktails. The cheese curds are beer battered very light with a home made ranch which is out of this world . So the things to order here Cheese curds Cheese fondue Ruben sandwich Perch sandwich Pretty decent burger The rosti potatoes which are these crispy hashed browns with cheese and onions in them Order them Well done for sure The meatballs The schnitzel Oh and if your not a beer person the try a brandy old fashion sweet ;)

Kitschy, touristy, a little overpriced, and delicious. What’s Little Switzerland without a little Swiss food? Glarner Stube is located a stone’s throw from New Glarus and smack dab in the center of the main drag. I went with the Swiss meatballs, smothered in a tasty mushroom tomato gravy. The accompanying roesti potatoes are the size of a frisbee, best described as a cheesy hash brown concoction. The wife picked the fondue, a not insignificant bowl of cheesy goodness. Did I mention the cheese? We’re in Wisconsin, after all. Service was friendly, food was good, making it a nice stop after a brewery tour.
