Believe the reviews. Delicious pizza with generously applied toppings. The guys in the kitchen are the nicest ever and so is the young lady who works the cash register. I live in nyc and when I brought in some nyc friends who are big pizza snobs they were blown away. My 80-something year old mother lives in the neighborhood and was previously not a pizza fan — she is now addicted to their pizza. So in summary: delicious pizza, friendly hosts. This place is a gem.

This is definitely one of 2 favorite pizzas spots in New Haven. The other being Pizza House but for different reasons. I love the antipasto salad here. It is to die for. The meatballs are also another delight. Sometimes my husband and I get just meatballs and marinara run home make a little pasta and chow down. They’re that good. Or in a sub. The marinara on the pizzas is fantastic. And sometimes I go there and buy the pizza dough which is super soft and fresh and they give it to you not in a plastic bag but in a floured pizza box. As many pounds as you like. But you have to use it that day. The dough is tender which means it hasn’t been over mixed. Plus the guys that make the pizza are really nice.

The neighborhood gem that in any other town would be the best pizza there. This is New Haven so in the land of apizza it’s still in the top ten. Try the antipasto pie for something you won’t get anywhere else and their red clam casino(ask for it with hot cherry peppers) rivals Modern’s and bests Pepe’s, Sally’s, or Bar. Extra bonus: NOLINES!

Great Fair Haven gem! I love the pizza. They also have Foxon Park soda and Polo Palo ice cream sandwiches and gelato. The service is always great and the staff is friendly and have a great sense of humor. In the spring, I received a very generous«Thank you», in the form of a $$$gift card from Grand Apizza. I used it to work my way through the pizza, ice cream and Foxon Soda. They also make a gluten-free crust, fyi.

One of the best pizza places I’ve ever been to. Don’t live there anymore so I still search for the next Grand Apizza wherever I go. Can’t comment on anything else they serve because I always get the Pizza. If you are looking for non-greasy semi-healthy pizza, this place is not for you. Keep up the good work!

This is the first pizza I remember eating as a child and it’s one of the first places I remember having a birthday party. I grew up on the pizza from Grand, and continue eating from their various locations well into adulthood. What I’m trying to say is, they’ve been making consistently fantastic pizza for a very long time. I personally think their pizza holds it own against the likes of Pepe’s, Modern, etc. I moved out of New Haven a very long time ago, but they actually opened up a location in the town over(Clinton) which is the location I’ve frequented for the last decade and a half. This is the only pizza place I know of in Connecticut that could satisfy a pizza craving for any of my friends from New York. So if delicious New Haven style thin crust bordering on burnt isn’t your thing, Grand still maintains the New Haven«apizz» without the Wooster St. char.

Grand Apizza has my favorite pizza in New Haven, hands down. I work right down the street from them and frequently order take out. I have sang their praises for their pizza, but now it is time to do so for their service and their generosity. I manage the library branch that is near their location and I asked if they could make a donation for a end of the summer party we were having for local kids who participated in our summer reading program. George, the owner was so nice and donated 5 pizzas for our program. The pizzas were delicious(of course), ready on time, and they even helped me to my car! I highly recommend Grand Apizza for fantastic pizza and wonderful, kind service.

I was just introduced to Grande… and I’m so thankful because my stomach has never been happier. Or bigger. My family wants to disown me for loving this place more than Zuppardi’s, which we went to for years. I’ve had the meatball sub. twice. and I’ll keep getting it. :) Garden salad is HUGE. the pizza is delicious… pepperoni, sausage & mushroom, plain… all are recommended.

So here’s the deal: first of all, I have the utmost respect for New Haven-style pizza. I was in town visiting my brother’s family, and we needed to get some grub in a hurry. Everybody wanted subs and pasta, and my brother recommended this place. Now, I’ve spent most of my life in either Boston and New York. In those cities, if you want subs or pasta take-out, the best places to get them are usually at your local independent pizza place. So it seemed natural to do the same here. What a disappointment! My brother insists I shouldn’t have expected so much, because in New Haven pizza places aren’t expected to make good subs and pasta even if they make good pizza. But I’m not buying it. They’re Italian, aren’t they? You’re mostly using the same ingredients, right? I haven’t tried the pizza here, but I don’t think I want to based on my experience. We called in our orders for two Italian subs(toasted) and one eggplant parmigiana. Fifteen minutes later we arrived to pick them up, and were told«10 minutes for the subs.» Umm… it only takes 10 minutes(at most) to prepare and oven-toast an Italian sub, so obviously they didn’t even start them until we walked in. The place wasn’t busy at all, so I think they were just lazy. While I was waiting, I saw on the menu that the Italian sub is made with ham instead of prosciutto… not a good sign. Once again, aren’t these Italians making the food? I was told no pickles for my sub. They weren’t out of them… they NEVER have pickles. WHAT??? Pickles last forever(duh…they’re PICKLED). There’s no excuse for not stocking them. Why even bother serving sandwiches at all if you can’t offer pickles? The tomatoes they put on the sub were flavorless hothouse tomatoes that looked like they’d been«sliced» with a dull meat cleaver. No lettuce available, either. And this is the worst part: I asked for green peppers on my sub, and what I got came out of a can. Canned peppers! See, that’s why I don’t even want to try the pizza… peppers is a common topping on a pizza, so does this mean the place is using canned peppers for the pizza, too? I guess so. So they probably use canned mushrooms, too. In fact, now I’m wondering what DOESN’T come out of a can. Where is the pizza sauce coming from? So when I finally got my sub, I wasn’t expecting much any more… and that’s a good thing, because it was pretty bad. The cold cuts were sub-par…I could get better cold cuts at the supermarket. My mother had the eggplant parm, which was basically just a tomato-sauce soup with a little cheese and eggplant hiding underneath. It didn’t come with any pasta… I guess that’s not how they serve the entrees at these places in New Haven. In Boston or New York, it would have come with pasta… I can live with the fact that it’s not done that way in New Haven, but I couldn’t help noticing it was the same price as what I would have paid in one of those other cities, where I would have gotten more. I’ve been told this place does a lot for the community(in fact, the great things my brother had to say about them are the only reason I’m giving 3 stars instead of 2). And I’ve heard good things about the pizza. But the next time I’m in town, I don’t see myself trying that pizza. Like I said, a pizza place that uses peppers out of a can, styrofoam-like tomatoes and low quality cold cuts isn’t a place I want to eat at.

I love this pizza pie! I love the place that it is in too, it is def. up and coming around the Quinnipiac RIver waterfront. Stands tall in one of the country’s toughest and best pizza towns.

I LOVE this place! I don’t like the area it’s in, but I love the food. Pizza is great! Simple salad with chicken is awesome. But my absolute favorite is their eggplant parm on a hard roll for $ 3! FAT sandwich with just enough sauce to coat the bread without making it soggy and dripping wet. Eggplant is fried to perfection and still a little crisp in the sand. excuse me sangwiche. Wash it all down with some Foxon Park and you have got a home run. When in season, the fresh tomato pie with pesto is KILLER! Best white clam in CT hands down. Pane cotta is the way I like it, crisp not soggy. You all can wait in line on Wooster St, that’s fine. Not knocking their pies, but it hasn’t been quite the same down there for some time… that’s just my taste buds. Judging by the long lines, there doing just fine without my $$. All the best to them. Parking…to be honest, I pull in back and run in and out. Never a problem unless Grand Ave is backed up or the bridge is up.

Grand Apizza is a fixture on Grand Ave in Fair Haven. The service is great, the staff are friendly, the prices are fair, and the pizza rivals the best places in New Haven. Quality ingredients, not too oily, and they never skimp on the toppings. Definitely the best pizza in Fair Haven, and among the best places in town! In addition, Grand Apizza has been an extremely supportive business to the Fair Haven community for many years, maintaining a clean and welcoming environment on a stretch of Grand Ave that has seen its share of turnover through the years. Grand has sponsored many neighborhood events and also hosts many community meetings within the restaurant. Any neighborhood would be lucky to have a good neighbor like this among our local business community.

Not sure why some Unilocalers are making comparisons between Grand and Sally’s/Bar. The pizza is good, sure, but not in the same league. Crust is a bit too thick and doughy and the toppings while tasty aren’t particularly strong. If you find yourself in Fair Haven and don’t want Mexican then I’d recommend it, but not as a pizza destination that justifies the trip in its own right.

Fair Haven is full of pizza joints and having tried most of them, Grand is the one to beat. the crust is awesome, maybe not as thin as some but still good cold the next day. they use decent toppings(tasty bacon, good cheese) and your hand does not drip with grease while you eat it(like most Fair Haven pizza). I always do take out.

Now, I might regret writing this review because one of the great things about Grand Apizza is that you can usually walk right in and get a table or if you order over the phone, it is never that long a wait, so maybe it is foolish to let people in my neck of the woods – Fair Haven – know how good it is. But really, folks, this pizza is terrific; it has great crust and sauce, for one thing, and a wide variety of toppings from the traditional to the more modern variations, like Pesto Shrimp. As a native of New Haven, I really know my pizza, and what many don’t realize is that some of the very best of it is found not in the big three – Sally’s, Pepe’s, and Modern – but in the neighborhood joints; in fact, anyone who remembers places like the old Venice on Dixwell or Dino’s on Whalley knows what I am talking about. Since I first tried Grand Apizza about twelve years ago, I have not set foot on Wooster street; I mean, seriously, why wait in line for an hour plus when you can get delicious neighborhood pizza without a long wait? Try it. You won’t be sorry.

Grand Apizza has been making terrific pizza forever. I used to go here when I was a kid and I still visit today. Even though the original owners are no longer here, the pizza is the same. My understanding is that the current owner worked for the original owner for many years. Compared to other pizza places in the area, their crust is more flimsy and their tomato sauce is more runny. I prefer it that way. It’s a «soupy» style. You can make a real mess of yourself(ie: sauce & cheese on your clothes) if you’re not careful. But nobody ever said good food is clean food. If you ever find yourself getting tired of the«big three»(Pepes, Sallys, Modern) and have the urge to try a new pizza joint, then I recommend Grand Apizza. The neighborhood may not appear to be the safest in the city, but they have a decently lit parking lot in back. I’ve never had any problems with the neighborhood.
