The queen has left the building… unfortunately trying to live off the reputation of the previous ownership for the current occupants is not working. The food is average at best. What terrace was always known for was the size of the grinders, particularly the roast beef… where it was a competition with Hamilton Market to see how many pounds of roast beef could be put on a sandwich! On my last visit, if I was lucky to get four pieces of meat on my sandwich I would have been lucky. It seems the new ownership is catering more to a Spanish food crowd, which may very well work for them, but a complete facelift or makeover would have suited the new owners better then trying to keep the *Queens* legacy going.

The Queen of Grinders! The sign in front proclaims it, so it must be true. But really… it is. A really good grinder is tough to come by in Southeastern CT, but Kathy has it nailed at her predominantly to-go sandwich shop. The key is the bread. The Queen bakes her own bread daily and offers up a number of sandwich options(hot and cold) in 3 sizes Mini, Small and Large. Mini is hardly mini and is more than enough for lunch. The Italian Combo is the real deal, filled to the gills with two kinds of salami, cappicola and ham. I also recommend getting the homemade garlic dressing(when available) on nearly any sandwich, its amazing. A variety of hot dishes are also available, varying by day. Sausage and peppers, lasagne, american chop suey, chicken parm… all kinds of comfort food and all huge portions. Service is quirky, but quickly endearing. Step up to the kitchen doorway, where Kathy sits to take your order, on her time not yours, as she is managing the kitchen and taking orders. It’s the Queen’s kitchen, not yours! There are only two tables at the Terrace but people mostly use them to wait for their lunch to be prepared.
