You never forget your first time, especially when the subject is Gamle Ode. My first time tasting GO was at the last North Coast Nosh and man what a pleasant surprise after visiting the Ingebretson’s table with the swedish meatballs, jerky, salmon and three kinds of herring. The woman helping Mike rinsed out my mug(very impressed that they had thought ahead on that issue) and gave me a tasting of the aquavit. Imagine a bushel full of fresh organic dill fronds. Now imagine that bushel being shoved in your pie hole. It was like that much dill, really. Clean, clear, strong fresh dill taste in a clear liquid — I have no idea of how he manages to get that much of a pure dill essense into the bottle. Almost speachless I moved off with a heartfelt thank you. At least as I moved off I noticed a slight smile on Mike’s face — I think he had seen the expression on my face before. Now I did wait until the next day to get a bottle of the stuff, but I am glad I did. For the time being bottles are only available at a few(ie. three) locations in the metro, got mine at Lake Wine & Spirits on Lake St. I know I will be hauling that bottle out at the next holiday family gathering, especially if we are having salmon. Last thought — I wish it was Sunday morning so I could use some GO to whip up a killer bloody mary!
