16 Handles

After scarfing down fried pickles and onion rings, in drunken elation, my friend drug me to 16 handles with some game show excitement.
It felt like a special treasure in suburbia, giving you that kind of spoiled kid comfort in busy Gotham.
It felt busy for a Wednesday night as we tried a few flavors that seemed a little unusual if a bit sweet, and they didn’t have plain, but this is about excess which became evident at the large and fun topping buffet.
I settled on chocolate with fruity Peebles, captain crunch, minature Italian rainbow almond cake cookies.
It was my treat and my friends portion was more gluttonous than mine and the bill for two fro yo’s was around $ 11.
16 handles has a sort of addictively dumb mall carnival feel, that has a delightfully unprentitous quality compared to say a gelataria with flavors like goat cheese and fig. I tend to favor the latter, something more adventurous and sophisticated.
But we had fun picking our flavors and toppings and even sat outside on the bench to enjoy our suburbam treats with urban street view bliss, even tho it was January.

Reminds me a little bit of Yogurtland on the west coast… except with better options! Ask for sample cups at the front to help you decide on the perfect flavor.
One of my absolute favorite things about this place, and the reason for the extra star, is that they have the option to add a divider to your yogurt cup! This has always been a problem I run into while getting frozen yogurt. I cannot decide between two options but also do not like to mix my yogurt. 16 handles is the perfect place because now I do not have to pick just one, i can have both without mixing! SO GREAT! I’ve been here a few times and tried many of the yogurts and toppings. Some are good, some aren’t that great so make sure to get a taste before buying a whole cup.
Yes, it’s expensive so if you’re enjoying it for dessert do so sparingly — they charge by weight and some of those toppings are hefty.
Make sure to join their rewards program — you will earn a free fro-​yo very quickly!

Good vegan froyo options here! There is usually at least 1 to 2 sorbet options and 1 soy froyo option, labeled clearly as vegan! This 16 handles usually has the soy «creamy» froyo although I haven’t seen it at other locations. I think this is what sets 16 handles apart! You can usually find sorbet dairy free froyo at other stores though.
Even the toppings are clearly labeled if vegan. Lots of fruit at toppings bar!
They are willing to give sample cups so that’s nice! Price is reasonable. I got a reasonably big cup for $ 3.70!
I like the acai sorbet a lot. Really refreshing. The soy vanilla froyo is delicious and super creamy! I like the vanilla over the chocolate which wasn’t chocolate enough for me. From what I remember it tastes like soft serve ice cream!
For non vegans: they have waffle cones if you want to put your froyo in it. Great variety of other flavors too!
They also have these awesome cup dividers if you wanna get 2 flavors without mixing. Genius!
Nice clean store. Overall I would definitely come back here for my froyo fix !!

Service is non-​existent and mostly dismissive in this very busy FROYO spot. But I love FROYO. And this place is already in my permanent cold treats rotation :)

Everyone knows the drill at a frozen yogurt shop… you taste a few samples, fill up your cup with the chosen yogurt flavors and add a mix of fruity or chocolately goodness then get it weighed and pay a ridiculous amount before enjoying your creation.
The thing, to me, that sets 16 handles apart is the selection of flavors. My personal favorite is the graham cracker or the old faithful, euro tart. They’ve got some interesting flavors switching in and out on a normal basis, flavors like salted chocolate chip and watermelon tart that peak my interest.
Can’t forget the toppings and this place has them all covered, from fruits to every type of chocolate you can think of plus candy bars and pretzels. My cup of yogurt is like the united colors of beneton, with a little mix of everything.
If you’re craving frozen yogurt, search for your closest 16 handles and load up that bowl!

This is my favorite froyo by far. I walk out of the way past pink berry and red mango to come here. Graham cracker and no sugar added praline are my favorites!
I love that they let you sample and it really isn’t very expensive for self serve yogurt. The hard spoons are also a major plus!!!

16 handles is my place!!! I am so loyal I never go to any other froyo shop, because I truly think they are the best. They open early enough for breakfast, although many of the machines are not set up, so your choices are limited. But during peak hours, they have 16 machines pumping out delicious flavors.
The staff here is great as well. I really appreciate how they let you sample the flavors without babysitting you. Some places will give you 1 small taste as they escort you to the machines and it makes you feel useless.
The toppings bar is also hard to beat. They really have everything from candy to cookies to brownie bites and many different drizzles (fudge, fluff, peanut butter, honey, etc.)
Favorites:
Euro Tart — low calories and not as heavy as Pinkberry’s, which I appreciate. Much more refreshing.
Graham Cracker — I dont know how they get the flavor, but the Graham Cracker taste is so strong!
Peanut Butter — One of the higher calorie ones, but just so delicious
Salted Caramel — so rich, so decadent, so good.

I love a good yogurt on a summer night. 16 handles was near my hotel and had a great selection of yogurts and fruits. It was really refreshing and such a great night cap after a long day of work. ENJOY!

I went to this 16 Handles yesterday and the experience was very good. They had many flavors to choose from, including low fat options. I really wish they had the coconut flavor that I’ve seen at the 16 Handles on the Upper West Side, but I still went with two flavors I knew I would like.
I had the the Peanut Butter Obsession (low fat) and the Brownie Batter. I am obsessed with brownies and really expected to love the brownie flavor, but I wasn’t extremely impressed. It was good, but I had higher expectations due to my love for brownies. Peanut butter is something I also really enjoy, but I was nervous since it was low fat. After finishing, I surprisingly thought the Peanut butter was better than the Brownie; it had a rich flavor, but it did not overpower the toppings or anything. I definitely recommend it and it being low-​fat isn’t too bad either!
There was a large choice of toppings and they even had some toppings I’ve never seen at frozen yogurt places, like large pieces of chocolate chunk cookies and peppermint bark pieces.
I only saw one lady working at the time and she was extremely nice and pleasant. Also, it was not too crowded at the time I went and there was available seating. It was an overall great experience and 16 Handles is definitely one of the better frozen yogurt places out there!

One of my favorite self serve yogurt spots in New York! This spot on 8^th is always busy, but you never have to wait a long time to get your sweet tooth fix. All the flavors are delicious, but one option I like is their soy vanilla began option. It has no dairy in it yet it taste delicious! Great option for all the lactose individuals out there.
They also have shakes and smoothies you can order if you don’t want icecream. They have lots of seat in to side and a little bench outside which is nice for people watching.
Fro yo plus unlimited yummy toppings how can this place not rock?!!

GRAHAM CRACKER! NUTELLA! AÇAI BERRY! Those were some of my favorite flavors from this location. Staff was friendly, toppings were fresh. My only complaint is that they didn’t have those juicy bubbles.
I was very, very, sad about that :(
Convenient location for a snack-​to-​go. My pal and I picked some yogurt up before heading for our walk at the Highline.

The flavors always taste like the flavor they’re supposed to (hopefully that makes sense… e.g. The graham cracker flavor actually tastes like graham crackers. Yummmm.).
The staff is friendly. Place is always clean.
The only downside is their 16 Handles don’t always work. Several flavors are often sold out or waiting to be «refilled» several hours before the store closes.
Nonetheless, this is my go to froyo spot.

We love this place so much that we try to avoid it as much as we can. My gf and I live around the corner and every time we go in we feel like we are five again.
The wide verity of flavors is great but our go to flavor is the birthday cake. You cant go wrong with it! I also like the mango which adds a bit of sour flavor to all this sweetness.
You can’t pass the toppings section. Cookie dough, different chocolate chips, bars crumbs and for the healthy persons around us some fruits.
In my opinion if you already have a treat go all the way!

I don’t know why this place got such good reviews, it was a major letdown. The flavors were all bland. This is a serve yourself kind of place and you pay by the weight of your froyo. I saw some kid reaching into the toppings & another adult coughing on them. Luckily all I did was sample the flavors and walked out. Went to my local grocery store and got mint chocolate gelato which was 20 times better.

16 Handles is the best frozen yogurt in NYC and this is their best branch.
The location is great and this branch has become a gay hangout on weekend nights in the spring /​summer.
So in addition to great variety of high quality frozen yogurt, it feels a bit like going to a party.

I was surprised at how friendly the employees were here. I was greeted upon entering and when I checked out all the employees had a smile on their faces and seemed genuinely happy to help me. What a nice experience.
Lots of great flavors to choose from, lots of toppings and all in a very clean and organized environment. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for some good foyo in the area.

I have eaten a lot of self-​serve frozen yogurt all over the country. Should I be admitting that? Not sure. But the real point is, I’ve been around the froyo block, and 16 Handles is my favorite. I have a little bias, though, because it was also the first one I tried, and my mind was a little blown that first time.
All the froyo is tasty, but the toppings are what really stand out. They’ve got Italian rainbow cookies!
Also, what a great name.

The cold weather won’t stop me from frequenting 16 Handles! I have a HUGE sweet tooth for frozen yogurt, and can eat it any time, any season. Of all the different frozen yogurt places in New York City, 16 Handles is my favorite because of the expansive selections as well as flavors that taste true to their names.
My favorite flavors are Graham Cracker and Salted Caramel. These flavors also go really well together. I love the Green Tea Vanilla as well, but this flavor seems to be seasonal and not available at all times. I also recently tried the NSA NY Cheesecake, and liked that as well! I typically don’t like No Sugar Added flavors because they taste artificial, but this one was very satisfying. The only flavor I didn’t like was the vegan vanilla one… it had a very strange aftertaste that left my tongue feeling icky.
The selection of toppings range from healthy (fresh fruits like blueberries, strawberries, mango, etc.) to sweet (chocolate candies). The danger of pay-​by-​the-​weight is that you could easily put a little bit of all the flavors and dish out ~$ 10 for a bowl of frozen yogurt.
