Barry’s Bootcamp Tribeca

Went here for my girlfriend’s 31^st birthday. birthday barrys with brunch. it kicked my ass and I loved it. I do like it hard and rough!

Trust me— I’ve done everything from random boutique classes to soul cycle & flywheel, barre, Bikram, cross-​fit, and then some… and they all shine in their own ways. BUT the Truth is: if you’re looking for the most effective workout— if you’re looking to SEE results in the mirror— Barrys Bootcamp is where you need to put your dollar and time.

My first Barry’s experience was at the original West Hollywood location. I must say, this TriBeCa location gives WeHo a run for its money!
I have attended classes by Dagmara, Abby and Bradford and they were all great. I felt the most accomplished in Bradford’s class, he pushed hard in a very motivating way. He also pushed teamwork/​team support the most. The treadmill is my least favorite and most challenging part. I have a love/​hate with dynamic mode. I have taken arms & abs and butt & legs. I prefer legs but that is because it’s easier for me.
I am happy to have a bada** workout and the familiarity of LA out here.

I hate the dreadmill! But somehow I find myself coming back each week. The class is challenging. The sprints and intervals and inclines are kind of crazy, but I just keep thinking to myself, it’s only one minute long. «you can do it «
You can definitely run at your own pace — the instructor usually gives you a range which you should run between. The first 10 minutes of class is the treadmill and then you’re on the floor doing some sort of ground workout. 2 rounds of tread and 2 rounds of floor and you’re done! I always leave here dripping in sweat.
The studio itself is okay. It’s not the most fancy but everything works. There’s a juice bar where you can order ahead as well.

I’m a Barry’s fan. my favorite instructors are Layla and Rebecca for this location. I’ve taken them a couple times for the butt and legs classes. Usually by the end of their classes, I have trouble walking/​sitting for the next couple of days. Both of them are very motivating and give such great workouts. as for the studio, it’s my least favorite out of the three (noho & Chelsea). half of their lockers don’t work. hopefully they fix the locks soon…

Wow. I walked out of this class wanting to cry, but feeling more accomplished than I have in a long time!
This was my first time at Barry’s and I was honestly PRETTY nervous. I have heard such amazing things, but also that it is INTENSE. I was pretty sure I wasn’t going to be able to hang and I was sort of right.
My first comment would be on the studio itself. With the price tag on these classes, you would expect a top of the line facility. The locker rooms are currently under construction, so there’s no showers. Also, there’s no water fountain or cooler to refill your waters. The nice man behind the juice counter will gladly fill it up for you from the sink, but I feel like these days a «do it yourself» water cooler is pretty standard in 95% of the studios I’ve gone to in Manhattan.
The class itself = AMAZING. Wow. The instructor was so motivating and encouraging and CHALLENGING. I really felt inspired to push myself throughout the two treadmill portions of the class (first round is for ~10min, then you go to the floor, then another ~14 minutes on the treadmill, then back on the floor). I normally take it PRETTY easy on the treadmill, never pushing myself pass 7.0 mph. With the confidence I received from the instructor, I was running as fast as 10.0 mph at one point, with an incline of 12.0 at others. The combination of music/​lighting really sets the mood and makes it FUN! I felt that I may not have been doing some of the floor stuff correctly (I found lunges, squats, etc. to be really challenging while wearing the booty band), but I still felt the burn. I’m really excited to come back for an abs or arms class!
I also love that you order your smoothies before and pick them up right after class. My smoothie was AMAZING, and filling enough that it was my meal replacement for the evening. Protein shakes are ~$ 9.00, which isn’t as expensive as I would assume them to be in a pricey studio.
I can see myself becoming a Barry’s addict! I highly recommend.

Work out itself was good, not as challenging as the San Francisco location, but it’s ok since I was on vacation and didn’t want to work out THAT hard anyways. I thought the staff was a lot friendlier than the Noho location.
The building itself is large and looks like it would be hip and modern, but it’s not. I agree with all the other reviewers that the facilities are gross. Bathrooms are small and look like they haven’t been cleaned in weeks. This was my 3^rd Barry’s location and I was curious about the Woodway treadmills that they used here. They looked like it was a much older model than the ones I’m used to. There was also crumpled up tissue and garbage behind the treadmills. When I was on the floor doing push-​ups, I instantly regretted not grabbing more towels, as my hands were covered in dust and hair left from previous clients.
I love you Barry’s, but this location needs to be clean, especially for $ 34 a class!

Still love the workout and enthusiastic instructors, but the facilities are in desperate need of some repairs. About half the lockers don’t work and some of the treadmills are a little ratchet (the heartrate monitor metal detectors falling off, screens have some problems). For the prices that Barry’s charges I think they should really have fixed these problems long ago.

No help whatsoever, I sprained my ankle in Barry’s class the previous day, and I needed to cancel my next class with a few hours notice. Despite my spending a ridiculous amount of money on classes almost every single day, they were unable to make an exception. Not impressed.

The facilities could probably use an update but Barry’s is one of the hardest workouts I’ve ever done.
Barrett was my instructor and even though it was my first time, he didn’t let me off easy. The treadmill intervals were crazy. I’ve never gone faster than 10, especially not at an incline of 6. Not for the faint of heart. I was scared I was going to fall off and break my face. Thankfully, the floor section was a lot more manageable than the treadmills. But Barrett was very encouraging through the whole class and had a great sense of humor. I would definitely recommend him for a first-​timer.
I felt super accomplished after the class was over but I’m still working up the courage to take my second class.

I love the workout here and some of the instructors are great, but it’s got issues:
–locker rooms are dark, dingy and plagued by maintenance problems
–maintenance issues in the workout studio itself: some treadmills are super shaky, parts of the floor are worn down and dangerously slippery
–front desk staff can be a bit frosty
–there’s nowhere to fill up a water bottle, save for annoying the person working the smoothie counter. It’s a bit ridiculous to not have a water station; buying bottled water is needlessly expensive and bad for the environment
I hope the studio will work to improve, as the workout itself is wonderful

Finally tried the class. I’ve been walking past this location for a while, and heard of the celeb/​cult following, but for some reason didn’t get around to it until yesterday. I took the hardCORE abs class with Natalie R. She was so nice! After reading all the reviews about how intense and scary the class gets, I was prepared for the worst… but it turned out to be really fun.
The 5:30 wasn’t too full, so everyone started on the treadmill. We ran for 9 minutes, and then switched to floor exercises, which focused on core. The treadmill was fine for me because I’ve been training for a half, but it was still intimidating when she started piling on the incline, which I normally keep at a nice, flat 0.0%. We went all the way up to 9% this class, which wasn’t all that bad, and sprints were up to 9.0mph, if you could do it. The core workout was pretty standard, we used one weight to add resistance to some of the moves.
Natalie was encourging, and emphasized allowing people to do what they could. She is super fit, so just looking at her made me tap the up arrow on my treadmill (a note on that: I’d never run on a Woodway treadmill before and they are AWESOME). She didn’t yell at us or call out anyone for not doing the moves (I took a few breaks during the crunches and elbow pushups) but the group atmosphere helped keep me accountable.
I think I was expecting to be completely spent, which I was, but afterwards, I felt like I could do even more. I loved it. I came out of there in the best mood, and totally obsessed. I will be going back for more, and considering buying a pass (way better deal if you end up trying it and liking it).
As for the bathrooms, I overall agree with the other reviewers. Not the swankiest, but that’s comparing it to the latest boutique fitness studios where everything smells like a Yankee Candle. This location’s shower area was fairly standard, about what I expected from a gym (maybe more along the lines of NYSC and Crunch than Equinox).

Love Barry’s — I have been coming to this location for about a year now.
Tips:
— Not all instructors are created equal. If you are coming here at an off time, you may get one that isn’t super motivating /​involved.
— Modify. If it’s too hard, make it easier on yourself so you can keep going. If it’s too easy, do the opposite :) (also, if this place is too easy for you — super jealous)
— The smoothies are expensive! The last one I ordered, they added chia seeds that I didn’t ask for which was $ 1 extra. W tax, it was a $ 10 smoothie! I don’t get smoothies often so maybe that’s market price in nyc but wow. Minus half a star.
— Minus the other half star for the locker rooms. I live in TriBeCa so I don’t shower here but over half of the lockers are broken (locks won’t properly close). This has been getting worse over the last couple of months — fix them!

Very Addicting.
Love Barry’s Bootcamp, it’s the most intense workout I’ve ever had.
If you’re ready for the challenge give it a try.
Minus 1 star for the high price tag coupled with the lack of amenities; no excuse for 2 shower and 1 toilet stall.

Firstly, for people who are scared to take a class at Barry’s because they don’t think they’re fit enough, I’d tell them to shake off that insecurity and just go for it. The beauty in the setup of each class is that while the coach will certainly give you a range to target (either on the treadmill or for floor weights/​work) you can always, always adjust to your current level of fitness and push to your personal best.
that said, I would rate the overall workout to be roughly a ⁷⁄₁₀ in terms of intensity/​craziness. After taking ToneHouse, I feel like anything else is a cakewalk by comparison. HOWEVER, that’s not to say this isn’t a legitimate workout (it most definitely is!), but while I warn people AGAINST taking ToneHouse unless they’re really confident in their fitness, I would not necessarily say the same about Barry’s.
You start either on the floor or on the tread. I personally had wanted to start on the floor but was told by the front desk girl that since the class was small, we were all starting on the treads. OK, no biggie, I’m a runner, I’m down with that. However, when we got to class, people were definitely split between floor and tread, so that’s a minor complaint I have overall (there was plenty of room for me to start on the floor if I was adamant about it, but you’re assigned a spot in class and I didn’t want to potentially displace anyone, so whatever!).
I took a Saturday evening Full Body class and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I’m still recovering from a foot fracture and was able to handle everything the instructor threw at me, including the gnarly 15% incline sprints on the treads (although I did dial it down a little on the speed just to avoid any faceplanting).
My training definitely skews heavily towards cardio and less on weights and crosstraining, so I recognize my weakness there. The floor work definitely felt great though, and breaking it up into 2 segments gave me a nice break in between (I found myself looking forward to getting back for part 2 on the tread!).
To get the whole Barry’s experience I also placed an order for a Skinny PB shake to be prepared and waiting for me post-​class. It’s really nice to have a nutritious and low calorie /​low sugar treat to refuel yourself with right after class, although honestly I didn’t/couldn’t finish the whole shake. Not because it wasn’t tasty, but mostly cuz my body takes awhile to be able to consume food and drink after exercise. It was also slightly pricey, and given the gym’s proximity to GNC, I think next time I’ll just grab something on my way to the train to eat a little later instead. Still, delicious shake and a nice touch.
As others have noted, the shower and locker area is definitely funkytown — not my jam at all, but I’m also spoiled by some of the higher end amenities many studios in the city are now offering. I also scheduled my class so that I could just go home and shower, so luckily I did not have to subject myself to that experience. In the future I’ll be planning to shower at the gym near my house as I can see how crowded and crazy it can get here after class.
Overall — I highly recommend Barry’s to athletes of ALL levels as you can tailor it to your level, but if you can avoid the shower area, maybe coordinate that! Shakes are good but didn’t feel like they were worth the sticker price per se given the options nearby.
More like 4.5 stars, minus the half star mostly for the funky shower sitch!

I had a terrible experience at this location of Barry’s Bootcamp and I will not be returning.
I’ll admit, I was running a few minutes late because it was my first time here and I never go to Tribeca so I had some difficulty finding it. When I walked in, I apologized profusely to the front desk girl who just rolled her eyes at me (red hair girl). She then proceeded to walk me into the class, pointed at the weights and the block I was assigned to, and then just walked away before I could ask any questions! I was left standing there, not a clue where the instructor was because it was so dark, could just hear his muffled voice yelling out commands over blaring techno music, so i started to move and try to follow along.
Besides the cold first impression at the front desk, I found the class to be sub par. There’s no instruction on how to lift the weights properly and safely. You’re sharing a block and treadmill with another person, so if they’re faster or slower than you, its an imposition, and the overall «clubby vibe» was just annoying, it serves zero purpose. I feel sorry for the people who succumb to celebrity marketing and image of a place that is not giving you your money’s worth.
There are MUCH better classes and gyms in NYC. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.

Just started going to Barry’s and I am LOVING it. The treadmill sprinting intervals add the right amount of intensity to make me really sweat. They need to fix the digital locks in the locker rooms though. About half of the lockers don’t work so you end up having to run out to your locker in the hall in a towel.

This is only the second Barry’s bootcamp I have ever visited, the first one being the one in San Diego. I’m a big fan of Barry’s so I decided to try the New York one out. They have 3 Barry’s in NY, so I accidentally bought the wrong pass when I purchased the class online, but they were able to credit me back the class. This Barry’s is bigger than the one in San Diego, I think they had at least 17 treadmills and at least 17 weight areas. The place was fairly easy to find in the dark with the GPS on my phone and thanks to the large Barry’s bootcamp trainer pictures on the outside of the gym!
If you know Barry’s, it’s all about dark room with red lighting, club music, and spending half the class on the treadmill and half the class on weights. Natalie was the instructor for arms and abs class, and she was great! She was motivating and instructional and a real sweetheart. Everyone in class was really nice also, letting me know I was reaching for the wrong bands. We split our time into 3x on the treadmill, and 3x with weights. I was definitely sore after the class, and that is how I judge a class!
I will say thought, the $ 34 drop in fee is quite steep. I wouldn’t feel comfortable doing too many drop ins here, and seeing as I don’t actually live in New York, I wouldn’t buy the bigger class passes.

I much prefer the location in Chelsea to this one… for a couple of reasons.
— Locker rooms here are smaller and the shower area is much less clean.
— Location has a lot of regulars, which is fine but it does make class feel a little more inaccessible
— Class wasn’t as intense or fun as the Chelsea one
Front desk staff is very friendly though, and I think this class was a little bit less crowded than the Chelsea one. It might have been because it was earlier in the morning though.
No complaints, just nothing spectacular. Still a great workout, and definitely better than many of the studios in New York.

I love and HATE Barry’s Bootcamp, especially when it’s time to run. I get all weird when I have to run on an incline and though I end up doing it, it seems like the world’s hardest thing. Barry’s classes are divided with 20ish minutes on the treadmill and then sets on the floor according to the day’s theme like Thursdays are full body.
The facility is clean, accessible for me near my job, and I like the space and amenities in general in the women’s locker room.
My 2 cons: they need to seriously pay attention more to FORM! It is on and off with folks. The prices are EGREGIOUSLY high. I wish there was a discount for educators :(
