It feels a little dirty for me to review one location and not the other, especially because I’ve been frequenting this hole in the wall a lot more often for the past 3 weeks, due to a location change at my job. This is the newer location. I feel it’s even smaller then the other one, but cozier. In this location, the coffee is always fresh. They carry Stumptown coffee. I always get a hot one and a chocolate chip bundt cake. I’ve gotten to know the workers in this location, it’s always either Alley or Josh. Two very sweet employees with much enthusiasm. It’s strange that two locations so close to one another both have two completely different vibes, but good vibes nonetheless. I have yet to order a cake from this location, but I’m going to assume it’s the same. I LOVEBTW.

Treats still tasty but now they have done away with individual cupcakes entirely and where they used to slice at least two different cakes a day(so you could go in and buy a slice for $ 6) now they slice one and when the one is done, no more. I went in today at 1:50, sure that was early enough for there to still be time to buy a slice of cake for the evening. I was told by the(very nice) staff that they had one cake and it was already bought up and they couldn’t slice another b/c if they didn’t sell all the pieces they cannot use the rest. People have very varied tastes so I used to think only allowing two types to be sliced a day wasn’t much but now to have one cake a day and when it’s done no other cake can be sliced? Every time I come in they offer– but you can buy a whole cake! True. But it is very costly and honestly I don’t want to have to buy an entire cake from a bakery that serves individually sized backed goods. Surprised that they stopped doing cupcakes and more than one cake/day at the same time as there is nothing else cake like in the store. So! The takeaway is, if you want a slice of cake you must call in advance and ask if they have any and what kind. Also it would be wise to ask them to hold a slice if you will be more than 5 minutes. Last week I called, decided I would get a slice of vanilla, got there and none was left. As mentioned previously I still think the prices are $$$$ for the quantity of the items. That is one of the reasons I kind of can’t believe when you have a cake selling out around 1PM you can’t slice another. At the $ 6 a slice price surely you can still make money off the sales? Sidebar I guess as they are saying they prefer to keep them intact so they can sell whole cakes that is a way to look at this store– more of an ordering a cake kind of store as opposed to a pop in bakery.

I found a gluten free bakery to die for. I will definitely be back on my next visit to the big apple. The staff were super friendly and gave me a great suggestion. A raspberry sugar cookie!!! I probably looked crazy gobbling it while I walked down the streets of the upper east side. It’s a little pricey so be careful. Oh and they are also dairy-free. So no bloating my friends.

Excellent tasting GF options. My BF and I would come here everyday if the prices weren’t so high. At LEAST $ 1 off every item here, should be considered by the owner. Please listen and make the change! Thanks! :)

I’m just so glad to have a gluten free bakery nearby! Everything is moist, flavorful, and just down right delicious. I can’t wait to go back!

Not a bad addition to the UES bakery scene. The name of this bakery references the gluten-free aspect of the food, as in, «by the way this stuff is gluten free.» I will add my own by the way. By the way, the cakes here are the best thing they make by farrr. I have had a chocolate cake from this bakery in the past and it was absolutely amazing. It was a 5+ star cake, better than most I have had with gluten. However, I tried a selection of the baked goods here today(apple coffee cake, almond cookie) and they were kind of soso. Maybe 3ish. Too sweet, texture issues, etc. So, if management is reading this, you guys should seriously make mini cakes, cupcakes, anything where you combine the frosting and cake you guys make. Maybe they already sell these kinds of things and they were sold out the day I came but man, I really wanted some again but couldn’t bring myself to buy a whole cake. Anyway, a solid place, at very least for the amazing cake. Believe me, I know it is passé to sell cupcakes in NYC, but please, please start selling cupcakes.

Super happy there’s a By The Way on the UES now, being no stranger since I live closer to the one in Hastings. I find the prices to be very fair for a bakery in the city, never mind that it’s gluten free, dairy free — which you won’t even notice unless it’s pointed out. The staff is very friendly, there is a slice of cake of the day which is awesome because I brought some back for my family and it’s probably some of the most amazing cake we’ve had — gluten free or regular. It was an almond tasting yellow cake with raspberry in between the layers and frosted with chocolate and could easily make me abandon this paleo lifestyle if the BTW by me was open at hours where I could get this cake at all times. I also grabbed some brownies(a favorite of the hubby) and muffins for my not so little one. This one stays open later, it’s the same lovely serene setting as the original, same quality(baked goods coming from the mother location), and My mom and I even found a new favorite cake. Helene has knocked it out of the park again!

Dropped by on a Wednesday night to find displays seemingly all full, presumably due to their quiet opening in the narrow space. Really warm, friendly staffers hooked me up with the tatsy $ 5 apple crumb — Mini Cakes(Apple) $ 5.00 — which was definitely more crumb cake than apple crisp, in a surprisingly good way.
