Probably my favorite gallery in the city. I used to stop in all the time, at their former location, a storefront on Greene St. Now they’ve moved to Chelsea, to a building right next to FIT. It’s a lot less welcoming to the public, since it’s not a storefront, but a 4th-floor office suite, however, the staff member on hand during my recent visit was happy to have me look at the art, and to chat about various artists. They’re best known for their Salvador Dali and Leonor Fini works, but they carry other artists who work in a surreal, mythic, or fantastic vein. This visit, they had some absolutely beautiful paintings on display by Anne Bachelier and Michael Parkes, and a gorgeous sculptural art necklace by Tom Shivers that I would have bought in a second… if I were richer, or it weren’t $ 9k. The work here is expensive — but it’s worth it. This is the premier gallery for this type of magical realist work. For those who don’t currently have the budget for original pieces, they do also have posters and art books, starting at very reasonable prices.

Fantastic Realism… this place has some WILD art. One of my favorite galleries in the world. Figurative painting and sculpture in the tradition of Bosch, the Italian Renaissance, Art Deco, Art Nouveau, the Viennese and German Secession and the symbolist movements with an edge of surrealism. I first found the place looking for one of my college favorites Michael Parkes. From there I’ve discovered scores of other artists. They also have some amazing Dali’s.
