Cosmo’s Launderama

As a long time resident of the east village, Cosmo’s is an iconic staple of the area. I do drop off as well as self and the rates are very reasonable. Sophie is a doll.

Had to review b/​c this place doesn’t deserve 1 ½ stars. No offense to reviewers but most places in the neighborhood have the same if not worse issues than you are writing about.
I do not think this place is dirty, nor expensive. I do self wash here weekly.
A machine has never eaten my money. There are many size washers (3 matter of fact). The dryers work fine. Granted some run hotter than others.
Yes they keep raising dryer prices — however– I do have to say other places dryers take longer so it nets out in my opinion.
Could I find a better place a few blocks away… probably… but is it worth walking a few extra blocks… No.

This place is cash only! They have quarter exchanges in the back, however, sometimes the machines don’t accept certain bills. Washers are 13 quarters one load, whereas the dryers are charged on a quarter to quarter basis, with each quarter buying 5 minutes of drying. The dryers were more so inconvenient because who would know how many minutes you need the clothes in the dryer? Instead of a simple dry and come back later trip, had to monitor the dryer and put in more quarters frequently to extend the time in order for clothes to dry.

Forget this place. Keep looking. I went there a few times b/​c it’s close to my apartment. It kept eating my quarters… EVERY time. I would look for an attendant, but no one was ever there. One day, mostly out of boredom, I recorded myself putting in quarters to see what would happen. I figured if I recorded myself… it wouldn’t eat my quarters (Murphy’s Law, or something?).
Sure enough, it at 3 of my quarters. And I now had it recorded. But I really didn’t care. I figured if I could find an attendant, surely they would reimburse me. NOPE!
The attendant immediately accused me of lying and thought I made up the little video. The washer had my clothes in it, and he wouldn’t give me my money back, nor add the extra quarters so I could finish my laundry.
A sign on the wall said to call 311 with any issues. I did! Then the very kind 311 operator said she had no choice but to call the police b/​c he wouldn’t give me my money back. It was such an awful experience. The police actually showed up and seemed to be familiar with this place and the guy.
IDK if the owner is scamming customers, or if the staff are skimming the extra cash.
Keep looking for another place. If I find one, I’ll post it here!

Have been going for nearly 25 years, in addition to their other owned laundromat on first avenue between st marks and 7^th street. Never do drop off, but most often the washing machines lack hot water and are dirty.
Prices continue to rise to wash and recently they have cut back on the drying time from 7 minutes to 6 minutes and have noticeably cut down on the amount of heat. In short, a business that has been ripping off the neighborhood for nearly 30 years. Complaints to the staff are met with a shrug and their own stories of abuse and mistreatment. A disgrace for Cosimo and his son the owners.

Did I just spend $ 20 to do my own laundry? Yes, yes I did. This place is significantly more expensive than nearby self-​serve laundromats.
It’s also cramped and has only one size of washing machine. Two stars for not being the dirtiest laundromat I’ve seen.

Dear Unilocalers, dear friends, dear down-​and-​out souls of the East Village who are just looking for a reliable dry cleaner. Do not ever go here. Please trust me when I say this, as someone who values her personal property and her hard-​earned dollars. Terrible customer service, terrible cleaning job. Avoid at all costs.

If I could give this place 0 stars for their drop-​off wash and fold services, I would.
I’ve never used the self-​service washer and dryers, I’ve only dropped off my clothes for wash and fold. The first time I dropped clothes off, I only dropped off towels, sheets, and pajamas/​crappy t-​shirts I don’t really care about — aka things that can be put into a dryer and won’t shrink or get ruined. That went fine, so I dropped off another round of laundry a few weeks later. I wish I read the Unilocal reviews before I went because I could have avoided the disaster I encountered at Cosmo’s.
I pre-​separated my laundry into two bags, and I asked the woman working there that she please not put the items in one of the bags in the dryer and please hang dry. She instructed me that would be no problem, and she would hang each item up in a plastic garment bag as if I was having the clothes dry cleaned. I found this strange, but was just happy she agreed to hang dry the items.
When I came back a few days later to pick up my clothes, everything was folded in one bag, which was alarming since I had asked her to hang dry a separate bag of clothes. When I began putting my clothes away, it was obvious that all of the items had been put in the dryer. Half of my clothes that absolutely could not be put in the dryer had shrunk substantially. I wish I could say that was the least of my worries, but two pairs of colored jeans I had asked to be washed and hung to dry came back with BLACK STAINS all over them. These were stains that were not previously there, and were obviously from their machines, as they were consistent on both pairs of jeans and the jeans were covered in these mysterious black lines.
I went back to Cosmo’s and showed the woman the stains. She offered to put them through the wash a 2^nd time to get the stains out. When I returned the next day, the jeans still had the stains on them. I asked the woman if she could please give these extra care to get the stains out. She said that they would need to be dry cleaned, so I asked if she would dry clean them for free. She laughed and said no I would have to pay. I let her know that this was her fault, and since she agreed to provide a service and did not provide that service she needed to figure out a way to fix this. She then told me it was not her fault, and was in fact MY FAULT, as I must have put an item in with those clothes that needed to be washed on its own, and must have bled dye onto my colored jeans. I ultimately decided this place could not be trusted to fix the problem.
In conclusion, DO NOT BRING YOUR CLOTHES HERE! Like the other Unilocal reviewers, I have found that these people cannot understand the simplest of instructions — have you ever heard of a drop-​off laundromat with wash and fold service that dries your clothes when you ask them to hang dry them?
Do not expect customer service, and do not expect anything positive to come out of this experience. I would rather walk 5 blocks out of my way to find a better wash and fold laundromat than EVER give these people any more of my money.
If you want your clothes to come back shrunken and with stains all over them, THIS IS YOUR PLACE!!!

If it weren’t so close to where I live I’d never come. The lady here isn’t all that friendly and the service is pretty awful. It does a decent job of getting your clothes washed (not sure about clean) and the dryers don’t work properly for thick towels.
The upsides:
–conveniently located on 1^st Ave and 9^th
–25 cents for 6 min in a relatively large dryer
–open at 7am (so you could definitely do laundry and get to work on time)
The downsides:
–unfriendly store owner
–the coins get jammed in the washer sometimes so you have to press the release button to reinsert them. Sometimes, it’s just too difficult to insert 11 quarters ($ 2.75) for the wash so I just move on to the next washer after wasting my 75c
–washers don’t exactly do a great job in cleaning

I took a jacket here that was way overdue for a cleaning the other day and they didn’t screw it up.
Being that it’s cotton twill, it would be difficult to screw up; they did quite a competent job. The other reviews here make me hesitant to want to bring anything else here, though; also, they must be very backed up with work, because I brought it in on Tuesday and they quoted me Friday for the pick-​up time.
I notice they appear to be part of the humongous Symphony chain of cleaners, although they clearly run this business as an independent.

Do my own laundry, prices aren’t horrible something like $ 5 for big washer, $ 2.75 for small. Biggest issue is the staff. Put clothes in dryer for 48 minutes and they were cold and wet. Being a smart guy, decided to add another 12 minutes and shockingly still cold and wet. Changed dryers and success. Told woman working, not asking for refund, but so that they would put an out of order sign on and have it fixed. She understood the issue, turned, walked away and carried on with her day. Went back to her and asked if she was going to post a sign and she grudgingly stuck a torn post it indicating «no heat.»
Will probably go back because the location is ideal, but definitely avoiding the top dryer #4 as it will still be «no heat.»

I don’t mind going here to do my own laundry, but the drop off service is horrible. I even talked to them and tried it 3 times before I wrote this review to give them a chance to improve. They don’t follow very specific and very simple instructions and the fold job is horrendous. If I’m going to pay to have my clothes done, the least they can do is learn how to fold. So now I go to another place that is further away, but they do a much better job, so it’s worth the extra walk.

the dry cleaners destroyed my fave sweater, it was bright pink, now grey going on white.

I have never used the drop off service here. I was thinking about it, but after reading the previous review maybe I won’t! I do enjoy doing my own laundry here, though. Not only is too convenient not to, on the chance that I find a lazy afternoon to do the chore, I really do love it. I’ll go to Café Rakka (is that what it’s called?) and get a falafel, or the 2^nd street bakery and get a yummy pastry. I’ll sit in the open window and read or people watch… almost more fun when it’s raining. I like how the place is small and simple, and never too crowded. I hardly ever see laundry attendants there, however…

This was my first time dropping my laundry off to have someone else do it… and it might be my last after this disaster!
I dropped off my laundry bag in the AM and was told it would be ready by 1pm that day. I picked it up at 5 after work and lugged it back home as quickly as possible… not thinking to actually look inside the bag before I left.
Well I should have! My clothes we all damp. So damp to the point of almost still being WET! That was problem #1.
Problem #2. The folding job looked like something a 5 year old would have done. Wrinkles, wrinkles, and more wrinkles added to the wet, damp laundry.
Problem #3. EVERY PIECE OF CLOTHING WAS TURNED INSIDE OUT. Now… as I usually do my own laundry and like to have things «right side in» after I wash and dry… I know they were not INSIDE OUT when I dropped my bag off that morning.
So frustrated. And will never, EVER go back to Cosmo’s. Not even to do my own laundry.
