Ordered the pork ramen and while the soup and noodles were hot, the toppings including slices of pork and half a hard boiled egg were stone cold, like they were taken out of the fridge and plopped on top just before serving. My husband, who never complains about anything, ordered the tempura bento and said he thought it was just tasteless fried batter. The gyoza were teeny tiny. We walk by this restaurant all the time and it is usually empty. Now we know why.

Neighborhood gem. Been eating here for years and never had a bad meal. Nice staff, too. It’s basic Japanese, not fancy, not trying to be something it’s not, which I mean as a compliment. Reliable, not expensive, perfect for a neighborhood place. Can’t say enough good things!

Ridiculously bad. I’ve had better noodles at my elementary school cafeteria. I paid $ 20 for terrible food and piss poor service.

I come here every time for some casual neighbourhood comfort food sushi. Their Negi Toro and uni don makes my day. I’m so grateful this place exists in my neighbourhood otherwise I’d be so sad!

I ate at Dan Tempura House and got violently ill a couple of hours later. I did call the restaurant the following day to notify them of my reaction. They were defensive and uncaring. The purpose of the call was to just inform the restaurant so it wouldn’t happen to someone else. i am not returning.

I came for the lunch special and ordered the shrimp& vegetable tempura bento box. The service was decent, no complaints about that. My main concern was the shrimp tempura being over cooked and it was just basically fried. When I bit bro it, you can see the different layers, which means it was cooked at one point and refried to seem fresh. It basically came out darker than tempura and hard to bite into. The vegetables were slightly soggy basis their tempura. Definitely concerning since their name is Dan Tempura.

My mother and I have come here a couple of times before a show at Lincoln Center. Both times they have been packed, however the turn-around time per table hasn’t really been a problem. The food is really good and it is clean.

Don’t waste your time or money. This was one of the worst experiences I have ever had. I don’t think they have ever heard of seasoning and the server was slow and rude. If you want ramen you would be better off with top ramen or maruchan… seriously! And the«sushi» just fell apart.

Ramen was not good at all… you can tell they don’t know how to properly make ramen broth… sushi rolls fell apart… honestly, just don’t bother.

I honestly have had better chirashi. The avocado wasn’t ripe at all. Poor presentation. Sashimi & rice not at all fresh. Definitely not worth the $ 25. I feel bad for my dad who took me out. BUT the sake was okay… eventho its diluted with an ice cube in the bottle. I think the only business they get is the rich white ppl who want to make it seem like they’re «cultured», so they can go out & go to a place where they dont get sushi in a plastic to-go box. It sucks at Amber closed. I really liked that place.

As many others, I ended up here accidentally — I needed to grab dinner before getting the train back home. I usually think that if Japanese people are eating at a Japanese restaurant, it’s a good sign. So when I saw a couple through the window, I went for it. The waiter really doesn’t clean up(I had a miso soup as an appetizer and the empty bowl was on my table the entire time. Same for my glass of water. The dumplings are not what I’m used to call dumplings and they were somewhat small. And the fried oysters tasted weird. What I really wanted was to have some sushi or sashimi, but I changed my mind as soon as I saw how much they would cost. So overall, I had a bad experience and blame it on that misleading Japanese couple :)

I stumbled upon this place last winter. My friend and I were freezing and stopped for a soup. I am so glad we did! We decided to try the place again and the sushi was fresh and very good. I introduced my boyfriend shortly after and he loved it as well. I’d recommended anyone to this place and definitely plan on coming back.

After 7 years in the neighborhood I finally decided to try it out. I was very pleasantly surprised. The service was fine. The restaurant was empty on a Saturday afternoon. So seating was where we wanted to sit. We ordered sushi, and a couple of soups. Everything tasted great and my only complaint was that they are really skimpy on the shrimp in the udon. That prevents me from giving the place a higher score. So service was fine. The food was fresh and tasty. The prices are more than reasonable from the other pretentious ripoff upper west side restaurants in the area.

I like a lot this Japanese place my first time, but my second visit was different. Ramen soups are really god, but they changed the bowls to smaller size and before, they added whole egg and now only put half an egg. This restaurant increased their prices with less food which is NOT okay.

Ehhhhhh. Ehhh. Eh. My gosh, this place is expensive. I only came here because I needed to go to Dizzy’s(do not go there unless some legendary person/combo is playing) right after dinner with friends, and I didn’t have a chance to Unilocal this place first before I went. I got a bowl of udon, like literally the most basic udon — came in some normal broth, had some veggies, an egg, and two tempura-deep-fried shrimp. Like, it isn’t as bad as everybody is saying, but my total came to almost $ 18, including tax and tip. That is just outrageously expensive and for what I got it’s not even supposed to be that expensive. Yes, New York is expensive but this is kinda pushing it a little too far. Don’t go here unless you reaaaaally need something to eat near Lincoln Center. –_–

The absolute worst. We went in only because we were freezing in the snow and standing right in front of this place. We didn’t realize how low its rating is until we’ve sat down. The ramen and udon were horrible. Stale, starchy/powdery, and with extremely little meat/vegetables. Service was even more horrendous. First, we had to stand near the front of the foor for a long time because nobody welcomed us. We had to approach them to ask for a table until they seated us. A couple minutes in, we then asked for our hot tea to be refilled. One hour later, after we were done eating, they still haven’t refilled them. Also, waiters normally refill water when it’s halfway empty. My friend’s glass had been sitting completely empty for an hour as well, and they still did not refill it. When we asked them for hot tea refills, they looked at us as if we were being too demanding to a busy staff, when really they just stood at the counter doing nothing!

Solid food for solid prices near Lincoln Center. My wife got ramen and I got a noodle dish. Both were good. We just chanced into this place and were happy with it. I don’t think we’d seek it out again, although I could see us getting takeout from there if we lived in the neighborhood. If you’re in the neighborhood and scrambling for a place, this is a good choice.

I wish I read the reviews before popping in here for lunch today. I would have kept walking. I sat at the bar and ordered a beer, crab shumai and two rolls. Not once did anyone come around and ask if my meal was ok or if I wanted anything else. Nor they did clear any of my plates or beer bottle. And most importantly, the rolls were completely flavorless even with a crazy amount of wasabi added. Don’t waste your money coming here.

Wow that was a lot of food and not that bad… is what you’ll be saying to yourself after dining at Dan Tempura house(I think this place may have changed its name a couple of times, it’s now called Dan’s Japanese Restaurant I believe). Thought I would never venture out to here as a main destination, Dan’s makes for a great pre-Lincoln center movie experience that take no planning. For less than $ 20, you can get a giant bento. My friend and I got the PORKKATSU and Chicken KATSU bento. What does it come with… lots of food. Since standards are high in NYC, I can only give the food 3⁄5 stars, but I really can’t complain about any one piece of the meal. #Bento: miso soup, rice, salad, shumai, cali rolls, veggie and shrimp tempura. Hard to beat in value. OVERALL: great deal. if you’re around the area and need to fill up with good food, come here, don’t mind the 2.5 star review average.
