Deitch Projects

I made it out to Deitch Projects and saw the Shepard Fairey May Day exhibit with one day to spare before it ended. Rich W. already uploaded a ton of pictures, but pictures do no justice to the craftsmanship and attention to detail Fairey puts in his work. My favorite pieces were Iggy Pop, Jimi Hendrix and young kids holding machine guns. Deitch is on a quiet little block of Wooster and the huge garage windowed store-​front lets plenty of natural light shine in. My pictures turned out excellent as a result. It’s too bad they’re moving to L.A. because this place is great to show off when friends come visit from out of state.

Wow, it was worth the trip so run don’t walk because it will end very soon.

Here is the real review– Following the advise of Rachel A., a couple fellow co-​workers and I headed out at lunch time to see this soon-​to-​be-​closed exhibit by Shepherd Fairey. Some of us were not really expecting much but a gallery from just seeing the photos posted on Unilocal and the website; we were surprised.
With careful examination of the individual artworks all of us were fascinated by the method used by the artist in creating the pieces; cutouts, newpapers, stamping etc.
Many of the details have special meaning and connection to the larger subject; like Debra Harry, the POW, the Rock Stars, the Dali Lama.
Take a view from five feet away but make sure you take a good look from 6 inches too or you may miss the essence.)

Go before it’s too late. I first caught wind of Deitch Projects back in 2008 when I read about the art installation of Os Gemeos, a brazilian duo of graffiti artists. Distracted by the many other activities in New York, I never made it. Now at the end of Shepard Fairey’s May Day, Deitch Projects will close it’s doors forever.
Talk about going out with a bang. I saw Fairey’s work at the ICA in Boston. It made the museum. Now, at Deitch Projects, Fairey showcases portraiture and one larger than life mural. The exhibit is good but somewhat two dimensional. I wish I got the chance to see other exhibits at Deitch Projects and experience the use of space with installations.
Deitch Projects is a huge open white space which lets in natural light through what looks like a glass garage door. Outside firemen were tending to a homeless man while a couple was taking wedding photos in front of the graffiti across the street. Throw in the snobs who summer in Maine and you’ve got SoHo. Deitch Projects, how could you leave us?
Time to plan a trip to Los Angeles.

i love, love, love, love, love deitch wooster. i also visit grand and lic, but i must say that the wooster location for deitch has the best exhibitions. just this year os gemeos, chris johanson and michel gondry’s be kind rewind.
today, i saw kehinde wiley’s down. another ahhhhmazing exhibit. the space is open and allows for creative installation. if you were fortunate enough to see chris johanson’s maze like installation and os gemeos’ playful barrage of color on the walls, you know what i’m sayin’. don’t forget the loft space upstairs. there’s always gems up there.
check it out, you won’t be sorry. that staff are pretty reserved, but when asked about the artist they warm up.
