It is a small place with nice contemporary artwork. I will recommend visiting this place if you are in the area. It is free. So you lose nothing if you don’t like it. The average person will not find it worth coming, but if you really like art, give this place a visit. As mentioned, it is free.

Deitch Projects is no more. One of their spaces has now been taken over by the Swiss Institute, a gallery devoted to showing the work of contemporary Swiss artists. I stopped by and checked out the exhibition/installation by Nicolas Party, which involved chunky rocks painted to look like slices of fruit, and strewn about the floor. They don’t look like real fruit, but they don’t look like rocks either… they kind of look like pillows, actually. Eye-catching. Here are some of them elsewhere: I kind of like it on the beach better: This show is on view through April 15, 2012.

For clarification, The Swiss Institute Contemporary Art New York is a non-profit organization with funding from the Swiss government. In September 2011 they relocated to 18 Wooster Street. According to their website, «The Swiss Institute has grown from a showcase of Swiss art and artists for a mostly Swiss audience, into an innovative international venue for art that provides a significant forum for cultural dialogue between Switzerland, Europe, and the United States. This unique angle fosters the interaction between the Swiss and the many other communities and nationalities found in New York City. The result is a distinctive view of art and a way of thinking which asks audiences to break with traditional assumptions about art and national stereotypes.» The new space is beautiful and has an inspiring modern Scandinavian/Kubrick type of vibe that is worth the visit alone. The giant white room on the first floor creates a sense of comfortable surrealness and serves as a fantastic platform for display. Additional display areas can be found on the lower floor.

This small gallery is in an office building off Broadway. I thought I was in the wrong place for sure. They have interesting art that changes often and it’s worth exploring.
