Disgraced

Come see this show before it goes away (next month I believe?).
I LOVED how I was able to see Josh Radnor from HIMYM here! He was just like his character-​witty and sarcastic, haha. It was awesome seeing him live!
The play itself is pretty simple, with no changing background/​props and no intermission. You have to really pay attention to the content and dialogue that’s going on, which can be analyzed and discussed in so many ways. Overall, their main theme runs deep and it’s an insightful show to watch.

90 minutes without intermission, Disgraced sizzles and pops from the outset, building slowly but surely to an explosive climax.
We have seen other well executed works in recent years that explore the themes of racial and religious prejudice (Crash and Do the Right Thing quickly come to mind). Like it’s predecessors, this work explores our inner biases toward one another. But what sets Disgraced apart is that it takes this inquiry one step further, allowing the audience a window into the protagonist’s conflicted feelings about himself, his heritage, and his religion. Despite his attempt to eschew his upbringing and ancestry, we learn that he feels these traits are engrained so deeply they are inescapable. It is a complicated inner conflict with which many can identify but few can clearly express.
Disgraced delivers: love and hate, pride and self loathing, posturing and authenticity. Terrific performances from the cast and a beautiful set make this show a must see.

Do yourself a favor. If you’re even thinking about seeing this play. Get tickets and go. Absolutely amazing. Captivating from start to finish. The best play I’ve seen-​I think ever.

OH MY GOD! Absolutely sensational!
The writer won a Pulitzer Prize for this play. Serious/​heavy subject matter, not for anyone under 18.
This has got to be one of the BEST plays I have seen in a long time. Gut wrenching, fantastic momentum & VERY well acted by entire cast. The story line is very raw and real and so relevant to international current affairs and relates to human aspects at so many levels. It was amazing. Everyone leaving the theater was raving about how much they liked it.
Ends on 3÷1÷15 so definitely a must see.

This was a very entertaining play to say the least. The time went by very quickly, that when the curtains came down I thought it was an intermission rather than the end of the play.
The cast did a wonderful job of acting, the characters were complex, and it had a few interesting themes running through it. As a viewer you really develop an opinion on the characters seeing them either as despicable or relatable pending on who you are and what you have experienced in your life.
In short, I recommend this play before it leaves Broadway.

This was a comedic, engaging, and thought-​provoking show. The play is smart and, at times, pretty intense. It is about a successful corporate lawyer of Pakistani/​Indian decent, and his conflict with the typical American perceptions as they pertain to people of his ethnicity.
This play is a powerful and beautifully composed work. It will keep you thinking and discussing the subject matter long after leaving the theater. If forces us to think about our relationships, who we truly are, and how honest we are with ourselves. One of the most important questions the play brings up is: how do stereotypes really shape who we are, and have we done a good enough job to escape/​avoid them? I think it also supports the fact that we have a long way to go as a «civilized» nation, and such dialogue is key to moving beyond our minor differences, and our comfort with prejudice.
Althought it is well worth the ninety minutes (no intermission) of your time, I thought the most powerful scene did not lend itself extremely well to the rest of the story, considering the fluid movements between the scenes which preceded it. Nonetheless, unless you are a cold robot, you will cringe.
I recommend the show for anyone interested in the subject matter. There are many comedic moments, peppered with some pretty dark ones.
Note: My seat was pretty cramped. I booked my tickets two days before, so I ended up in the 3^rd class mezz section. Perhaps the seats closer to the stage were a bit roomier.

I’m a theater junkie (quality theater is hands down one of my favorite things about New York) and have to say that Disgraced is a truly fantastic modern play and very deserving of its Pulitzer Prize (for drama).
Summed up: the entire cast is phenomenal, set design is great, the theater itself is charming, and the story itself is very gripping. Be forewarned: this is a very heavy play with a lot of hard-​hitting sociopolitical themes (particularly regarding how Islam is viewed in America, as the protagonist is a Muslim man who distances himself from his religion, but the play also touches on feminism, racism, and interracial marriage). Some parts were almost difficult to watch. But these are the kinds of things, in my humble opinion, that art needs to explore and discuss. Disgraced does a fantastic job doing so. You won’t walk away from this play in giddy post-​musical stupor, but you will feel cathartically cleansed (well, at least I did).
I highly recommend this play. It’s a great and relevant representation of modern America. Also, to all you How I Met Your Mother fans, you should really check out this play to see that Josh Radnor is just as great with heavier material!
