You’ve got to be kidding me. After seeing Unilocal say this is a four star place, words can’t express how upset I am. This restaurant is a shitshow. For starters, we sat near the chef. The restaurant has piled up an admirable heap of crap back here. It’s rather ghetto ambiance. Soon after we were seated, we requested a wine bucket and glasses — this is byo, after all. Okay: great: the chef drops a glass on the counter, pieces of glass flying at our heads. Then we had the pleasure of battling with our server’s strikingly limited English.

Fu, amazing naked sushi party. It’s been a while since I’ve been there but the food was amazing. I forget how fresh your food is, definitely stopping by to taste your latest creations.

Thanks to groupon, I get to discover hidden gems, and Fu Sushi made it to my list. We had a wonderful meal, complete with edamame, seaweed salad, and several special rolls. I admit the prices are a tad higher than the places in St. Mark’s or outside Manhattan, but our waitress was pleasant and the atmosphere was cozy. I thought it was worth every penny. The seaweed salad was tasty and fresh, not drenched in sesame oil. Their rolls had a fair rice to ingredient ratio and their hot sake was good as well. They even have salmon lovers and tuna lovers samplers. We had some of our dinner packed to go and the waitress came back to tell us that the kitchen accidentally threw away the food! To make up for that, she had us choose ANY two rolls on the menu and they would make it for us asap. I’m sure other restaurants would’ve just made us order the same thing again, and it was great how she gave us an option(we didn’t take complete advantage, of course! We felt bad and didn’t want them to put in extra effort). The chocolate chip ice-cream that came with the groupon deal was a great ending to our night. We were expecting the usual red bean or green tea flavors, and we were pleasantly surprised. I hope there’ll be more suprises to uncover the next time we come back.

It’s weird to see all the reviews vary so widely. This was our first trip to Fu Sushi and we loved it. We are vegetarian and rarely go for sushi because it generally involves fish. Having lived in Japan, though, we miss sushi and Japanese cuisine. So we checked out the menu and there were many choices both in the sushi and the appetizer menu. We had edamame, vegetarian gyoza, and the spicy, dragon, ochinko, kimchi and a few other roles. Everything was great! The rolls were expert and beautiful. The flavors were just right and the ingredients fresh. One detractor: The health grade is a «B.»

I must say… I was very sad to hear this place was shut down. To the dis-believers, their food was fantastic. However, as we now know, their business practices were less than reputable. Sadly, even if they do re-open I won’t be returning, which is sad, because their food was great. They had fantastic sushi at great prices.

Came here on a Saturday night around 930pm, based in the good Unilocal reviews I found on my phone. I called to make reservations so I’d have seats when I get there within half hr. I called them again to let them know I was running late and they held the table for us. When i walked in… The place was SO loud. I typically am not very sensitive to loudness, but this place was small so it made the noise level even mo unbearable. I quickly realized the reason why this place had such high ratings was because its byob. And since it was byob, everyone was drunk. We ordered our food and tried to have a conversation while we waited for our food but my throat was too dry from yelling and my boyfriend said his ears started to hurt from all the noise… so we had no choice but to ask to get our food to go. It was that unbearable. The staff was really nice and apologized. Bottom line is I wouldn’t come back on a weekend night, and prob not even on a weekday either bc their prices aren’t even cheap — miso soup/salads not included in anything. But ill give them an extra star for decent service.

BYOB restaurants. Love it. Yummy sushi, good vegetarian options. The Dragon Portobello Roll is to DIE for. While our wine was uncorked within minutes, it took about 20 minutes to order. But, they also didn’t shoo us out despite the crowds. BYOB makes it a winner in my book.

I was unsure about ordering sushi for delivery… it seems like fresh raw fish and time spent biking around was a poor combo. In spite of my hesitation, logic stepped forth and said, «Tristan, people are ordering this for delivery every night, and not dropping dead.» So I ordered two rolls and some miso soup. It arrived quickly, and in impeccable shape. The spicy tuna was fresh and delicious, the sweet potato roll was intriguing and dessert like, and the miso soup was hefty in portion and also in flavor. Would I order delivery from Fu again? I did the next night.

An EXCELLENT culinary experience! I have this friend. She’s vegan. She’s our token girl that we drag to sci-fi conventions… well, she’s a geek too, so — we dont have to drag her. Regardless, Shes a vegetarian and sometimes Vegan. I think at one occasion she ate something overtly meat, claiming freeganhood. but thats neither here nor there. We’ll call her Eltee. Eltee had a birthday recently and invited the wife and I and some friends to Fu’s for some sushi. Gina and I were feeling under the weather, so — we almost didnt make it. But then we took lots of extracts and OTC drugs and a nap. And we went. The menu there has all of the standards you look for in a sushi joint, but then you see some things on the menu called«color handrolls» that are made with tofu paper. Normally, this kind of thing would turn me off, I like my sushi seaweedy. But for some reason I went for it. It was AMAZING. Not good. Not great. Like… AMAZING. I had mushroom onion soup, something I would NEVEREAT if my life depended on it(wifey ordered that one for me) and it was great! Edamame, great! Then came the colored hand rolls… the spicy scallop might have been the best. They were all amazing tho. The rice was perfectly sticky. I sampled allot of what else was at the table, and every bite was delectable. Hot damn, this Fu guy knows his Sushi! Ahhhhhhmazing food. Great, friendly staff. The place was a tiny bit dark… the place was also pretty inexpensive. I think the 5 of us ate apps and dinner for ~$ 110!

To be a critic* requires a fine balance of tolerance and snobbishness. When assessing the merits of a restaurant, I try my utmost to maintain a ‘fair and balanced’ perception, though I’ll admittedly inject a Fox News level of spin given the circumstance. I am a sushi snob. I hate concept rolls — rolls named after fictional monsters with a propensity to laying waste to Tokyo, rolls named after cities and their associated cheese products, rolls with an ingredient list longer than… my long winded Unilocal reviews. But I realize that sushi restaurateurs have a hard time catering to purists and a city as thriving as NYC can only support so many Yasuda’s without diminishing returns. Fu plays a dangerous game between the two schools of sushi — they make an attempt at both and come out sitting as prettily as a slice of salmon nigiri on a pat of rice. The snob in me loved Fu’s sophisticated usuzukuri — delicate filaments of fluke in a light yuzu dressing. The low-brow in me also loved the habanero rolls — innocent looking rolls packed with tongue-blistering chopped habaneros will allow you to re-create a «Man vs Food”-esque eating experience. The alcoholic in me loved the fact that Fu is BYOB. The critic in me assessed with disdain, the sloppy handling of the sticky rice of the nigiri, which was packed as tightly as an uptown 6 train during rush hour. The asshole in me scornfully abandoned a complimentary ‘amuse bouche’ of a Dorito, topped with an effete dollop of spicy tuna. Here comes the«Fox News spin» part of this review — I’m giving brownie points to Fu for the bold though eclectic menu, for being unflinchingly graceful when accommodating a large party, and for keeping it real, despite fierce restaurant competition in and around the East Village. — — — — — – * If you want to be critical, Unilocaling isn’t true criticism.

I was arranging a 29th birthday for my boyfriend and 9 of his friends. considering the fact that it was byob and i recalled the food being pretty good, i made the reservations for 10 that night. big effin mistake. i arrived to the restaurant earlier than the guests to make sure the waitress had my bf’s birthday cake before the party arrived. cake AND candles(crayon candles to be exact– the most adorable looking candles) were handed to waitress. directions were given to waitress to bring out lighted candles on cake when entrees were finished. dinner was finished waitress brings out the cake in the box and hands the box to my bf as if she is feeding a stray cat. completely mortified, i grabbed the cake from my poor bf and asked for the crayons from the senile waitress. yes, food is decent and people praise the byob part but honestly, for MUCHMUCH better service and similar price range. go to haru downtown. this place is a bust

DONOTLETTHESEHIGHLYRATEDREVIEWSFOOLYOU! Just because the place is BYOB doesn’t mean the food is good… The sushi here is below mediocre. I’ve had better sushi at ACYE or Buffets. This is what happens when you have non-Japanese owners, the quality of the fish is barely edible. And the food isn’t even that cheap. All the photos are posted by the owners and the place is so dark you can’t even see your food. Spend a few dollars more and go to Sushi Yasuda instead. It’ll be well worth it…

I would have said four stars without the noise. The waitress we had was super cute, and super friendly, and very on top of her game. The food was superb, we’re talking five-star quality. But the noise was just rediculous. And I go to clubs all the time. Food: 5 stars noise: 2 stars service: 5 stars price: 4 stars Oh, did I mention it’s byob?

BYOB, so who doesn’t love that, right? The only complaint I have is that, for a Saturday night late dining option, it’s embarrassingly slow. So slow, in fact, that the owner agreed with us that 2 hours to wait for our food(and this is after 10PM) is simply unacceptable and he discounted our tab. I wouldn’t avoid it, but I’m not sure I would be eager to go back either. Also, the menu is heavily tilted towards spicy items. I won’t complain about that as I love spice, but it makes you question both the imagination of the chef and freshness of the food if everything needs to be spiced.

was looking for a sushi spot to take my Mom to for her birthday & I came across Fu Sushi. F U Sushi? Is that like Up Yours Burger on Avenue A? Jokes aside, I later learned that the place is owned & run by a certain Mr. Fu, which explains the name. They opened a few months ago in a space that was a crusty old clothing store & the décor is pretty simple, with plenty of cozy tables & the sushi bar & kitchen at the far end. We were offered tea & water as soon as we sat down as we looked through the menu. We were having a conversation about how we both hated any sort of sushi with cream cheese on it & presto, the chef sent out an amuse bouche of tuna ‘crunch’ on a corn cracker with guess what: cream cheese! Oh, the irony. It was actually really good though. We decided to order the Sushi & Sashimi combination for 1 as a starter while we looked for more stuff to order. It took quite a while to come out as it’s obvious that the chef takes decoration very seriously & I’ll admit that it looked like a piece of art(which we eventually defaced). I still can’t get over how much food there was. Both of us were stuffed after eating the plate(& we still had a few pieces left). The White Tuna was by far my favorite, but there was 2 pieces of clam sashimi(we had to ask what it was), that both of us really didn’t like, just a matter of our own tastes. Mom-Dukes got an order of Uni(Sea Urchin) as well, which was equally as attractive. I didn’t try it, but she looked very pleased. After we were done, they sent out a martini glass full of sectioned oranges which were deliciously sweet. The food was excellent, the service was amazing(no teacup went unfilled!) & it was incredibly well priced. My only real gripe was the lack of booze, a real bummer! I certainly will be coming back here soon & I hope that the massive portions & the lack of booze doesn’t lead to an early demise…

Although I had a few issues with Fu, I’m happy I found it and will return. Most important factor is the fish and it tasted very fresh. Second, the prices were reasonable. Third, the service was friendly but overwhelmed. They had 2 sushi chefs and 1 hostess/waitress. She really had her hands full and although she was super sweet we had to ask twice for water, and I ended up having to get up myself to fetch menus after we were sitting for almost 10 minutes without them. I mean, you really shouldn’t have to ask for menus or water, right? That being said she did comp us a few miso soups and the tiny but tasty tortilla chips with a tuna tartar concoction(which I believe everyone gets after seated). I had a yellowtail jalapeño roll and the Fu Roll which was rolled in soy paper and reminded me of my #1 favorite sushi roll(the kerry roll) from Tsune Sushi in the San Fernando Valley. It wasn’t quite as good but it was certainly tasty. My friend had the Sunset plate which was fish tempura on a bed of greens. As previously noted the place is indeed BYOB, and I brought a white Bordeaux, which I had never had but was a perfect pair to the fish. I’m giving it 4 stars but it really could improve in the cleanliness department. The bathroom was filthy and I saw a suspect bug on the wall near the entrance. Also, the place is busy, crowded, and loud. They should bite the bullet and invest in a waiter. Not fair to the hostess to juggle the phones, tables, and coordinate pickups and delivery. She was overwhelmed and it made for a less enjoyable experience trying to flag her over for water refills, menus, etc.

I did a Unilocal search for sushi in the east village and decided on Fu Sushi due to the stellar reviews. I was extremely impressed with my impromptu sushi outing. The sushi chef here is truly an artist. Every dish comes out like a work of art and tastes even better! My meal of choice: Kani Salad — Picture perfect; almost too nice to eat but you’ll be glad you did. Salmon Sushi — Always fresh and delicious. Spring Roll — Spicy crunchy yellowtail and jalapeño topped with avocado and yellowtail. Delicious! My favorite roll in all of Manhattan. American Dream Roll — Shrimp tempura, avocado and spicy tuna topped with spicy lobster and kani. An flavor orgy in my mouth. The service is super friendly and always with a smile. Oh, and the place is BYOB with no corking fee… need I say more?

Nice BYOB sushi spot. The service is always extremely friendly, and the food comes out quickly. It’s easy to get in for a relaxed and cheap meal with friends. It’s not the best food ever… the veggie rolls are decent, the steamed dumplings can get a little watery, and they often serve the veggie rolls mixed in with those with fish, but I can get behind anywhere that I can have a full meal with lots of wine for about 8 bucks.

Great service, good food, BYOB(with no corkage fee)! Spacious and pretty clean, sushi dinner is about $ 20, average roll is about $ 12. Sushi comes out nicely arranged, and the staff attitudes are great! Definitely worth a stop in.

Fu offers the freshest sushi available, cheaper than anywhere else in the city. The high-quality fish is consistent and served with that delightful small-shop guarantee: if you don’t like it, the owner and chefs are right there and will replace it with something else, no charge, no question. I recommend any of the Fu Special rolls, to suit your own taste(i never enjoyed cream cheese with sushi), and there’s often a new desert each week, something you aren’t likely to find elsewhere. Each dinner begins with complimentary spicy tuna & spicy salmon with panko ganache, each served on a nacho chip. You must try it! On my last visit, I tried a pamano fish(Nobu doesn’t even offer that). Fu’s best offering, though seasonal, is the decadent — almost buttery — king salmon. Bluefin toro is completely superlative as well. Any regular sushi you try will also impress. I say this as someone who spends several thousand dollars a year on sushi. The shop is small, perhaps 6 tables, but tastefully decorated though the television may be on(the only out-of-place element). They recently began doing take out. They’re open until midnight, which is WONDERFUL. Clean, consistent, and well worth the trip.
