Furry Rascals

Customer service here has gotten really poor. I started coming to Furry Rascals in May, and the major appeal over Amazon or Petco was the friendly staff here. I ate the higher prices because I want to support local entrepreneurs and see small businesses do well.
And for the first few months I went in here, the staff was really nice. I loved going in with my dog because it was like a treat for us both. They seemed to love dogs, and the conversation with me was cheerful as well. Good vibes all around.
However, the last few times I’ve been in have been almost embarrassing. Nobody has greeted us when we walked in, nobody has asked if we needed help (even when we clearly did), any help we do seek out is weak and rushed, the supply of some items I’ve wanted was out (and when I went back on the shipping day they were still out with no apology). I felt like I was starting to become a regular there, and now I just feel like a burden when I walk in. Uncomfortable.
I gushed over FR with a friend on one occasion and a family member on another. And as we left, both were really puzzled over why I had said I liked the place so much. Now I can’t really remember either. I’ll be going back to Petco and Amazon.

The owners are very nice and knowledgeable. They have given me plenty of advice for my dog. The woman is Italian I believe and she never tried to oversell me but rather gives me advice on what steps to take for whatever problem I have. Its a great place for wet and dry food as they have some good reputable brands. They have everything a typical pet store has, confined into a smaller space. Place is always clean and the Mexican cashier always asks how my mother and I are doing. I am very grateful this space opened up. The other pet stores in this neighborhood, although very nice, are incomparable.

Well stocked store. They’ve had everything I’ve come for every time. The staff is always friendly and I love that this store has a delivery service. It makes things super easy when you’re just busy busy. I do feel they’re a bit on the pricey side but in a emergency or when youre just too tired and busy (living in NYC this is always the case) I think it’s worth it. Also, I might have found it pricey because they carry good brands.

I was trying to support a small business rather than go to the chain stores. Plus I heard they had the good dog food… But at $ 80 for a 23 bag of food, I’m going to need it to also take my dog for at least a walk or two. Guess I’ll continue to go to the chains where I pay $ 50 for a 30 bag of good food.

This place is right near my job and I’ve been here a couple of times when I was running low on dog food and was too busy to go downtown to Petco to pick some more up. They have a lot of high quality premium dog food, which is all that my spoiled little baby eats anyway. Great selection of Stella & Chewy’s, which is our go to brand these days. The resident store cat is a cute friendly little black cat who lounges on the counter. Customer service is excellent. The prices are noticeably higher than Petco or Amazon, so I really only go there when I need pet supplies urgently. But it’s definitely worth checking out!

This place is my safe haven when it comes to my boys Panda and Dexter. Rubin and Carlos run the store six days a week and they are our personal saviors. They have always been there whenever I’ve come running to them. They care for my pets. Anyone that knows me, knows that this is the way to my heart. The store has a large variety of quality foods and if they don’t carry it, just talk to Rubin or Carlos and they will order it. They have everything any pet store has but with the added bonus of genuine friendliness and real love for our animals. The owners are there on Sundays and they are just as wonderful as the staff they have working for them. They really go out of their way to make their customers happy. They have another store (Spoiled Brats) in Bennett on 181^st and as expected it’s just as great as Furry Rascals. Keep up the great job guys! Love love love you!

I’ve only been here once, but I already know I’ll be back. They have a great selection of high-​quality food and supplies and the staff is super, super nice. I got to talking to one of them about the older black shop cat, Negrito, and the guy told me he rescued him off the street a year or so ago. So sweet! After that he asked about my cat, and I’m always down to talk about my cat, so he definitely won me over, haha.
Sure, you can get most of what they have cheaper on Amazon, but it feels good to be buying from a local business whose employees seem to really care about your needs. Definite old-​school neighborhood vibes!

FREE, NO MINIMUM delivery! They have all of your essentials and if they don’t have a particular item or brand… just tell them and they will order it.

Great selection of high quality pet food with really excellent service. The fact that they are always willing to deliver and do so quickly and for free is a huge incentive to shop there. Their prices are competitive, but the fact that they will deliver – even at the very end of their day! – is fabulous. We don’t shop anywhere else.

I really love these guys. They have such a great selection of food, snacks, toys and other items that sometimes I end up just browsing around for a while even though I’ve been there many times before. It’s OK, they don’t judge me for being a crazy cat lady. At least not to my face, anyway.
Yes, some of the stuff is a little bit pricier than what you can get it for on Amazon (just a few bucks, usually), but these guys are just so damn nice and helpful that it’s worth it to shop here for the most part. They deliver if you can’t carry it back to your place or just feel like calling in, they give great recommendations, and they really seem to care about your pet. The prices are still pretty competitive and it feels good to support a neighborhood store. I consider myself lucky that they’re in Washington Heights!
Oh – and if they don’t have what you’re looking for in stock? They’ll call their other store and have it brought down from there that same day or order it in for you if they think they can get it. How awesome is that.

What a great place! I recently got a puppy and had many questions about foods, grooming and snacks! Many friends recommended other sites to buy food and treats for the puppy but I found that Furry Rascals is actually cheaper! They even deliver! They don’t sell the typical commercial brands that aren’t good for pets. They have only the best!
When I first got my puppy about six weeks ago, he was being fed a popular commercial brand causing itching and dry skin. When I went into furry rascals one of the workers listened to what I had to say and went through all the different food options with me. After about 24 hours I noticed a much, MUCH happier puppy! This is definitely my go to place!

Nonexistent customer service — I’ve been to this store several times and I’ve asked for specific items to purchase… All they do is point to an area and sit or stand behind the counter. I went in yesterday and no other customers were in the store — you would think that someone would walk me over to the item or help me find the item I wanted to purchase. No one asked «May i help you?» These things are important to me when I am spending my money in a store. Will not be going back nor recommending this store to anyone. I try to shop in my neighborhood, but now I will go to a pet store on the UWS.

I haven’t found them to be more expensive than major chains in NYC. For example, I’ve spent less at Furry Rascals on Nylabones, Blue Buffalo dry food for dogs, and puppy training pads than at major retailers. They even compete with online, auto-​shipping retailers because Furry Rascals delivers for free (not that it’s too far to walk) and I don’t have to worry with the typical mail-​delivery-​drama of «will I or won’t I be home when the dog food comes?»
On a more personal note, I’ve had great experiences with the counter staff — who’ve made policy exceptions and great recommendations based on my purchase history, and who’ve insisted on delivering items between stores when one location is more convenient to me. They’re great folks and the prices are fair.

Great pet store, and great service! Very clean inside and has a ton of products for such a small place. From food, to leashes, to medication – this is the ultimate local pet store.
I haven’t tried the delivery service yet, but from the sound of the other reviews, they aim to please.

I live around the corner from this place. My dog was scratching a lot and a saw a flea on him. I went right over to find something. The guy that works in the store was not very helpful and had a bad attitude. He recommended some flea drops for $ 60. I said that sound like a lot. I looked on my phone at petco and the cost was $ 7 for the exact same product. Buyer Be ware!

I’ve been going to Furry Rascals for about a year now, since I moved to Washington Heights. Not only do they have a nice selection, but the sales representatives will hook you up with anything they don’t already have in the store. The delivery staff is also great (no complaining even though I’m on the 6^th floor and the elevator’s under renovations), and delivery is free! Really!
So why 5 stars instead of 4? Well, two reasons. The first is that the sales representatives ask about my cats and how they’re doing, and how they like their food (if I’m switching brands). The second is that once, when my cats didn’t like food that I got them, the sales representatives refunded my entire purchase, even though I didn’t have a receipt or the uneaten food with me, and told me they trusted me to bring in the uneaten food later. I did, of course. But they wouldn’t have trusted me to do that if they didn’t bother to get to know me in the first place.
As another reviewer wrote, their prices may be a bit higher than a bigger chain, but it’s definitely worth it for the service and to support local businesses.

As a cat-​fosterer, I really like this place. Their selection is excellent in terms of food and litter, and they’ve got lots of other odds and ends too. They’re also in a nice part of town, so I enjoy taking a stroll there when I’ve got time. But the best thing about them is that you don’t need to go there in person – they deliver! They’re super fast and super nice about it, too. Their workers are quite nice and have very good phone demeanors, so it’s relatively easy to find what you need there despite not being there in person.
Also they donate food and litter to the Washington Heights Cat Colony. So extra points for being awesome. All-​around, they’re a great little shop – the best I’ve found uptown – and I’d recommend patronizing them.
