Gracie’s Laundry

Wish i could give 0 stars. The place is horribly run down and has an odd smell especially in the back by the tables. We noticed that a few dryers had what looked like were burn marks on the front. Should have been a sign but we dried our stuff anyway. We lost a comforter and a few sheets do to the extreme heat of the dryer. Staff is attentive and helpful but machines are no good. Stay away

Gracie’s Laundry. Sigh. I wish there was a nearby laundry shop in the area. Two stars because some machines are not working well [like last time my downy didn’t go!!] and the machines were obsolete. I wish they had those card-​operated so I didn’t have to worry about looking for quarters every time I do my laundry. The last time I did my laundry was really annoying because there were some kids playing with the carts and the laundry staff just didnt do anything about it!

«Out of service» papers taped up on various washers and dryers rotating around.
Out of service machines with no out of service papers on them. Usually there’s washers and dryers that don’t work (don’t open up to give my clothes back, eat my quarters, don’t dry the clothes, dry the clothes too much to the point where there’s smoke).
A sense that this place was abandoned around 2002. There’s computer station ghosts and what looks like monitors from a decade ago. There’s also a sitting area in what used to be some sort of vibrant hang-​out diner spot.
Taped up spaces, pieces of equipment, doors, etc. that look like they should be repaired but aren’t.
The people who work there have heard and seen it. So they understand when I’m pissed from a washing machine or dryer nazi and try to help out.
Too bad the owner sucks so much he can’t put repairs into this place. Someone should take this place away from the owner and give it to someone who is going to care.

Nothing extraordinary about this laundromat. It has numerous double ($ 2.25) and triple load ($ 4.50) washers and the dryers ($ 0.25 for 6 minutes) have substantial space (if you need more than one just for your colors, I would recommend visiting more than once a month). The few times I’ve been there a few of the machines were out of service.
They do have a dry cleaning service but I’ve never used it.
This place is located below street level and has two entrances/​exits. The entrance facing 109^th St. has steps. If you’re arriving or leaving with your cart, consider using the entrance on 110^th St. which has a ramp. Don’t be like some of the geniuses I’ve seen struggle to get their carts down the steps.

Washer prices start at $ 2.25 for a «double» load (though the machine says double, I think it’s small enough to be a single load), $ 4.50 for a «triple» load and $ 5.00 for the really large machines. There are a few machines that are $ 3.75 that seem to be the same size as a «triple» load machine, but when I went this evening, only one was in service. That being said, too many machines, both washers and dryers, are out of service. Dryers are $ 0.25 for every 6 minutes. What’s nice about Gracie’s is that it is usually not too crowded, there is ample space with tables and chairs, and my main reason for going here is that it’s open late in comparison to the other laundromats in the area. It closes at 11pm, with last wash posted as 9pm.

This is a good, no frills laundromat. It can look a bit dumpy from the outside, but don’t let that fool you.
I use this laundromat quite consistently. First, the longer hours are nice. I always hate it when some laundromats close so early — some people work, you know! So being able to do laundry at 8:00pm on a random Wednesday is important for me.
Secondly, it’s spacious. I’ve never had a problem getting a washer or a dryer. I never have gone during a weekend afternoon, however, but that is because I assume that’s the busiest time to go. Also, I don’t know the people who work there personally, only asked them for change, etc but they are helpful enough if I ever needed change, any issues arose, etc.
Also, because the place is big, I already read a book, etc and like that people aren’t packed into one small, cramped space.

I used to think this place was ok but they’ve just become so unreliable. The laundry is NEVER ready when they say it will be and sometimes when they send someone for pickup in «20 minutes», I’ve waited for more than an hour.
Sigh.
I’m gonna have to find a new place.
Also, the laundry does come back really reeking of soap.

We decided on Gracie’s after looking at a few other laundry locations purely because it was more spacious and looked cleaner than others around. We went this morning and it lived up to expectations. Since others have chronicled other specifics about this place, these are the prices that we remember (as of the date of this review):
Double load Wash — $ 2.25
Triple load Wash — $ 4.50
Dryer — $ 0.25 for every 6 minutes (you can alter the temperature between High heat, Medium heat, Low heat, and something else)
Also the hours of operation are «Monday-​Sunday» from 7am-​11pm (last load can be put in at 9pm).
We will definitely be back.

The owner, refuses to reimburse his customers when his dryers burn your clothes. I have lost $ 300 worth on high thread count sheets because random dryers are calibrated too high. The owner is cheap, so he is unwilling to pay for the regular maintenance of his dryers. Beware! Either the dryers are broken, too cold or too hot.

I called & they came and picked up my laundry. There was a slight language barrier so I wasn’t able to ask when my laundry would be ready but I called 2 days later & it was done. They offered to deliver it but I just went ahead & picked it up. I thought it was relatively cheap, they washed everything in my hamper for less than $ 15. My one complaint is when the clothes came back they didn’t have that nice clean cotton smell. I think next time I might ask them to use my own detergent… I like the way it smells!

I know most people get their laundry done for them, but I really want to do it myself.
For self-​serve laundry this is a very comfortable, spacious and even peaceful location. It’s slightly underground so it doesn’t get any un-​laundry foot traffic. In fact it’s easy to miss, but it’s right at the SW corner of 110^th and Columbus. I had previously done my laundry at Sud’s (110^th and Amsterdam) and I found it tolerable and probably what I would expect to find an this neighborhood– crowded, a little dirty but generally civilized.
But Gracie’s is so much cleaner and spacious. I felt comfortable taking a walk around the block and leaving my things unattended. The seating is plentiful, and the floors and other surfaces look like they are regularly cleaned.
If you’re counting your pennies like me, compared to Sud’s, it’s a little more expensive for the triple washers, but a little less expensive for the doubles. But for the comfort alone this is worth it.

I get my dry cleaning done at Gracie’s, and have not been disappointed. The prices are cheaper than other places in the area, particularly for men’s shirts (washed and pressed). I’ve never had an issue with anything being late or not ready.
My roommate had a problem, however, when she brought our decorative pillow covers to be dry cleaned. When she brought them home, one was missing both beads that were threaded on strings on the front. She brought it back and they told her they would find beads and fix it. She went back when they said it would be ready and it wasn’t ready. She left it and the next time it still wasn’t ready. She just took it home at that point. Our pillowcases are clean but still missing the beads.
Overall, I wouldn’t take anything too valuable here, but for regular dry cleaning and washing it’s a good place. I haven’t used the laundry facilities, but there is a large area with tables to sit at while you’re waiting for your clothes to be done.
