Food is very good. The kaisen don comes with a good amount of fish, all of which is very fresh. The set comes with chiwanmushi and miso soup, which makes for a decent deal. The chicken dishes are also very flavorful. The cocktails are refreshing. The interior is lovely and not crowded, despite the Times Square location. For the quality of food, the prices are reasonable. Only thing stopping me from giving all out 5 stars is that service can be slow.

I love«Katsu Toji». The price is a little expensive, but it is really delicious. I think Potato croquette is one of the best in NYC. :) Other foods are also great. There are always many people in this store, so it is usually noisy. However, the service is nice.

A gem amidst the Times Square chaos. Incredibly fresh fish and great set menu options. The sparkling sake was very refreshing too. The wait doesn’t seem to be as long as they tell you(they have quite a large space and quick service), and it’s worth it for high quality Japanese dining in that area. Typical New York prices for what you get BUTNOTIP(already built into price), so actually perhaps a bit cheaper when all is said and done!

One of the decent japanese meals I had in this country. I’m originally from San Francisco and this beats San Francisco japanese food. Came to this restaurant because I was craving for some japanese food and came across to this place while I was aimlessly walking around bryant park. I ordered the kaisen don mini teishoku, and it was delicous. The soba was tasty, sashimi was fresh, miso soup was just right(not too salty), chawan mushi was the perfect consistency and right amount of seasoning, lastly the pickles was perfectly seasoned and pickled. Definitely gonna come back here when I’m in NY again to try the other dishes from the menu.

Server did not give me water, and no tea. Needed to ask again for water. I’ve been to the location in Greenwich village. I’ll stick to there, not this location. I ordered the mackerel set, but it had way too many bones. The fillets were not deboned at all. I would not get the mackerel again.

Just decided to have lunch near work and to my surprise, this location is pretty spacious, my wait was under 10 minutes, I was on my own so I sat at the bar in front of their semi-open kitchen. Nice customer service, just like every other lunch set/don oriented Japanese restaurant. I ordered the Housemade Tofu for appetitzer(because I’m a big fan of housemade tofu), it’s too mushy and it wasn’t easy to pick up by spoon, the sauce was nice and light, but slightly too salty together with the bonito flakes. One other place I’ve had very good housemade tofu was Cocoron and Zenkichi, I have to say that Ootoya’s tofu is a piece of creamy soy goodness. I loved the flavor but not too much the texture. For entrée I got the miso tonkatsu, it’s served in a hotpot, as soon as it came in the pork katsu was still sizzling, smelled very good, but it’s a shame that this miso was way too sweet. I preferred all the cabbage in the meal, it soaked up all the miso sauce, it’s perfect to eat with rice. The pork katsu was not crispy anymore, no complaints because it’s sitting in a sauce/soup, but it’s not as tender as I would have liked, but I could tell it’s a great piece of pork. So? The sauce was just too overwhelming, the batter unwrapped itself as I was picking up my katsu because it was too wet. But overall the set was not bad, the miso soup was very good, not too salty not too light. The chawamushi though, was the most smooth and most slippery thing I’ve ever had, how did they make it? It just slides through my tongue, it seemed like they put oil in the egg but hey, it’s a pretty amazing experience. I will want to try another set next time and dessert.

Slightly pricey with a long wait, but the food is amazing and worth it! Went with a friend and ordered two of their set menus. Tried a variety of yakitori and their tofu salad which was really good. My friend ordered the kimchi hotpot and I had the gyu shio koji which is a platter of beef cooked to perfection paired with rice and steamed egg.

Does the food taste good? Sure. Is it anything special? No. Is it overpriced? Yes. Can you find everything they offer for cheaper elsewhere? It’s called St. Marks. Highlights: tofu that comes as a side dish with most of the sets, yuzu poochi poochi drink, and the cute spoons My breaded pork don with egg over rice was averagely good, but I’ve had better for more than half the price. Same with the yakitori skewers. Personally, I doubt I’ll be back, but I can’t really say anything bad except the price value. Then again, it’s midtown /almost Times Square area, so prices are jacked up a bit. Izakaya shouldn’t be priced like that unless it’s special. My pork don is like Japanese street food in a nice set presentation.

As Asian restaurants take over Manhattan. Ootoya Times square is one of leaders of the pack for authentic contemporary Japanese food. Its not quite an Isakaya and not quite a sushi bar and it does have the feeling of being straight out of Tokyo. Overall we loved it and I could easily become a regular here. We started out with some very well done Yakitori from Organic chicken parts. The chicken livers were the standout. From here it was onto an extravaganza of grilled norwegian salmon and Ikura chirashi style and Pressed salmon nigiri in deliciously amped up variations of grilled, spicy mayonaised’, and raw pieces. These plates were accompanied by some nice miso soup and velvety egg custard. We washed it down with some very nice sake from an extensive and well defined sake carte. The menu here goes deep with ramens, sobas, lots of grilled items and very solid sushi type items as well. The waitstaff are exceptionally nice, perhaps because they my be getting some good wages due to the no tipping policy. While not anything like the many high priced ala mode sushi bars all over Manhattan, Ootoya gives you a really nice experience for a fair price. With three locations they have got the formula down as evidenced by a packed house of mostly young well Heeled diners who are obviously in the know.

Ooooomg. WHY can’t this exist next door. SO delicious. So worth it. Phenomenal quality and taste. Beautiful, precise presentation. Service is more Japanese style than American so don’t put too much weight on it but honestly, once you see and taste the food, you could hardly give a shit. The amberjack is one of the highlights of my life. Sex in my mouth. Their cocktails were light and refreshing, great palate whetter. Yakitori were excellent starter bites and expertly done. My friend and I both got the Kaisendon and we were almost crying and orgasming at the same time while eating. It was a sight. Service was sub-par-ish but honestly, I couldn’t give a flying one. Really. They could berate me next time and I would still come back.

There are just so many good Japanese restaurants and this place is no exception. We came in around 8PM and it was at least a 20 minutes wait for seating around the bar. I didn’t mind sitting at the corner of the bar though ’cause the three of us were able to converse with each other. The menu has a lot of food listed which made choosing something nearly impossible. Thankfully, one of my friends have been there and recommended the soy-sauce infused broth set. I ordered Katsu Toji and that was so good. I think the broth made the pork lin tender and juicy. I recommend you to get the set because the rice complemented perfectly with the main entrée. Just thinking back… I could eat rice with the soy-sauce broth by itself too. I wasn’t a fan of the tofu side bowl but only because I am so used to that kind of tofu as a dessert dish. Overall, I had a wonderful time here and highly recommend it. It is on the pricier side but treat yourself if you have the chance!

Ootoya is very, very Japanese. The menu consists of the type of food that you would expect a host family in Japan to cook for you. It’s simple, good quality, not overly salty or oily, and very comforting. Second, there’s no tipping but come expecting extremely friendly and attentive service! My friend and I swung by Friday at 8pm, and there was no wait for a table of 2. Perhaps because of its slightly hidden location near Times Square, crowds don’t come rushing here? We each ordered our own kimchi hot pot set($ 26), a very heartwarming kimchi stew made with Napa cabbage, pork belly(not that fatty), tofu, scallions, and egg. It came with a side of rice, cabbage salad, and egg custard(!!). The kimchi hot pot was delicious, fairly light even compared to a soondubu from Ktown, but so filling! I mainly left my salad untouched as I was already too full. The egg custard on the other hand had the perfect melt-in-your-mouth consistency. My friend was expecting a sweet egg custard, so be warned, Japanese egg custard is cooked with a savory fish broth. We also tried the shio chicken skin skewer($ 5). I haven’t had too many good Japanese skewers in the US as they often seem to be associated with cheap late night food(thanks St. Marks), so I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this! The skin was crispy and chewy at the same time with a ton of flavor. Ootoya is such a gem in Times Square, I can’t wait to come back!

Love Ootoya and I love it even more when they no longer accept tipping ! Their service is seriously impeccable that you feel so bad you didn’t tip them. The Kasen Don(sashimi over rice) is so delicious that it’s insane ! The miso soup and egg custard come with the set are also really yummy !! The Gyu yakitori & mini fried chicken in sweet & sour sauce were just OK, I would not order them again, but highly recommend their set menu, as I have tried grilled fish set, hot pot set and Kasen Don, and I have been very satisfied for all of them ! They don’t really take reservation but the wait time is reasonable. Highly recommend this restaurant if you are in Time Square area!

They have several locations but the Times Square location is the most authentic. Lol In terms of having Japanese wait staff but again there are a lot of Japanese clientele in the area. I had eaten at the 18th Street location and wasn’t too impressed but had a more memorable dining experience at the Times Square location. Maybe it’s all psychological? Went there with a buddy and we ordered the fried shrimp app, croquettes app, and the Tori Kurozu(like chicken karage with their special sauce). The shrimp and beef/cheese croquettes weren’t greasy at all. The Tori Kurozu had more sauce than I would have liked. Next time I’ll order sauce on the side for dipping. For entrée my buddy ordered the Demi Burger and I had ordered the Katsu Toji. We shared both entrees to sample. After looking at what other people ordered, I was skeptical if I would be full splitting the meals but my stomach was quite satisfied and I was not disappointed! We arrived around 1:15 on a Friday afternoon and had to wait 15 minutes. It was packed with not only tourists but workers in the area. By 2:30 the place had emptied out. I recommend dining at Ootoya, no matter what location you stumble across!

Good, but not amazing and a little on the pricey side. I had Ootoya bookmarked for my trip to NY. Saw many pictures of this place via fellow instagramers and decided to try the times square location. Came here on a Sunday night and the place was packed. Good thing we came around 8/830pm ish so there wasn’t a wait. Restaurant was spacious, plenty of seating area. Service was poor, our server was not attentive and barely came by to take our orders/refill water etc. We basically had to wave her down for everything, pretty annoying in my opinion. Food wise, it was just average. Most items on the menu comes in a set, you get a chawanmushi(egg custard), pickles and a very flavourful miso soup. We ordered two sets, the Kaisen(Chirashi) Don and the mini Maguro Don. The Kaisen don included an assortment of sashimi. Most of the sashimi was good except the Uni and Salmon Roe. These two did not taste fresh at all and had a very fishy after taste. Honestly tasted like it was a cheap selection of sashimi. The Maguro Don was a lot better, with the tuna tasting pretty fresh. The sets don’t seem like a lot of food at first, but you definitely leave feeling pretty full. Overall the place was good, but I don’t think it lives up to the hype. It’s NY, there are plenty of amazing Japanese restaurants around.

Food is alright, just don’t get a burger! I wasn’t sure what I wanted to order so the waitress recommended the burger. She said they use a sauce that came from Japan to cook it so it’s very special and really good(of course they always say everything is really good). I was in the mood to try something new so I went with it. To my disappointment, the burger came out be a regular beef patty(maybe thicker than usual) cooked in onions and mushroom… and it was really not that special. For the same price, I could’ve gotten myself 5 good burgers from shake shack. Guess I should’ve picked something that was more Japanese. For a pricey lunch like that I kind of expected more. Picking salmon or chicken might have been a better choice. Don’t forget the wait time is about 30 minutes to an hour and they don’t take reservations ahead of time. They also won’t seat you until your full party is there.

Came here with a corporate lunch for a party of four at 11:30am on a Friday, which was perfect timing since this place does not take reservations and tends to fill up very quickly during peak lunch hours. I was excited to try this place because I’ve heard great things and love trying new Asian cuisines, and even though everyone loves sushi and Americanized-Japanese food, I was eager to try some authentic Japanese food. To begin, we had some green tea and their homemade tofu which was great, definitely needs the flavor addition of wasabi powder and salt. We also ordered the salmon sushi starters which were unreal. A colleague of mine ordered a vegetable dish that looked tasty, someone else ordered the katsu which looked quite decadent(I was definitely in the mood for something a little lighter, but definitely for my next visit), and another person and I ordered the mini maguro with hot udon noodles. The tuna was incredibly fresh, and the udon noodles were great — I added a lot of the spicy powder for flavor, but I like that it’s customizable). Our service was very attentive as well! Great experience and will definitely recommend to anyone looking for an adventurous dining experience.

Pros: authentic, good quality, good atmosphere, good variety of food Cons: expensive, very busy and long wait without reservations, service slow since they dont have assigned tables, dessert not so good Went here on a weekday night(Tues) without reservations around 7pm. Waited about 15−20min for a table. Service was not so attentive and had to call the server whenever we needed something, including ordering. Food was actually great– homemade tofu salad was good but a little too much greens and less tofu. Just tofu appetizer might be better. Kaisendon was yummy, especially the yellowtail. Just a little expensive. $ 35 for a kaisendon is like twice the price of what you will get in Japan. But I guess its in Times Square so they need to pay the rent. Dessert was disappointing. Green tea Crêpe was so bad… Strawberry parfait was boring… Cheesecake was probably the most original, but seriously I can make one better. They use too much pre-made food and nothing housemade. Desserts should be housemade if they charge $ 8 – 10 for a small plate! Probably won’t go back. Better Japanese food with better prices are available elsewhere.

Popular and very busy… even when I came here as soon as the restaurant opened for dinner! They were very accommodating considering we did not have a reservation. BLUF: Ootoya is my favorite Japanese chain I’m NYC. Classy setting compared to most Japanese restaurants making it a great place for a meet up with friends or for a date. Make sure you have time to wait or come at a less busy time as Ootoya Times Square only takes reservations at 5:30PM and is relatively crowded during high time. We arrived here at 10:00PM and were seated quickly was the kitchen was to close in half an hour. There were plenty of spots as it was near closing time. We placed our orders and then called for a large junmai sake. It was a dry, flavorful choice which complemented the ice cold weather outside. For my meal, I ordered a Kaisen Don which is an assortment of sashimi blue fin tuna, amberjack, scallop, scottish salmon, uni(sea urchin), simmered sea eel, salmon roe and egg served atop of sushi rice. The nemo(fish) was some of the freshest I have had in the city. The pieces seemed to just melt in my mouth. The only downside was the imbalance of the fish and the rice. I was left with a lot of sweet sushi rice which I didn’t have anything to eat with. However, this was still a filling meal. The meal for two cost $ 80+tip so no small change but was worth the evening with superb service and food. Definitely will be returning to this location or the one in East Village. I absolutely love Ootoya.

Come early as there is always a wait. We sat by the front bar area and ordered a bunch of things including a set meal. The presentation is very nice as with japanese food but portions are small and expensive. We ordered so many skewers the waitress was questioning if us two girls can finish. Most of the skewers were good and we liked the sea salt style more than the other one. just expect an expensive meal for small portions though.

Such an authentic experience here! They even gave me 3 types of spoons to take on my Kaisen don — reminds me of my days at a nicely run place in Japan. Clean flavors were simple and spot on — I enjoyed every bite of raw fish, udon and steamed egg. The salad came out watery — but that’s about it The katsu son was also very well done — disappeared from our plate quickly This place typically has long lines, but not on a late Sunday afternoon for us. Do try it if you’re in the mood for nice Japanese near Time Sq — 40/Broadway

Ootoya is one of my top Japanese restaurants. I came here for dinner after a Broadway show. There was no line. My favorite is the grilled mackerel set. This is a great spot for lunch. They have cute lunch sets, which include a miso soup, steamed egg, and a few pickled vegetables to accompany your entrée of choice. I really enjoy the grilled fish and the chicken yakitori box. You are guaranteed to have good food every time you come. The service is also excellent. The only drawback is that there is a wait when you come during peak meal times, so be sure to beat the rush!

When I’m having a Tokyo«jones» this is a place to come. Busy environment with lots of folks having conversation while enjoying the food. I opted in as a single on a Tuesday night. Went with the Kaisen Don. I thought it was great. Frankly anything with good uni on it ranks high in my book. The sashimi selection was excellent and nicely presented. The miso was very interesting and had onions and other veggies for some texture but not too much to stray from tradition. Service was great and a will visit again next time I’m midtown west.

Reviewing after 10 visits: Food and service are very nice. Restaurant can get very busy; it does not take reservations. MANAGER, TAKENOTE– A menu with photos would be helpful, because it is hard to visualize what some of these combination platters are. MANAGER, TAKENOTE– It’s a nice gesture that the waiter presents you with a face towel when you sit down, but the towels smell of laundry soap– as if somebody used too much soap or didn’t rinse the laundry properly. When a new customer sits next to you, the delicate aroma of your SALMONSAIKYO is replaced by LAUNDRYSOAP from your neighbor’s towel — yes, the soap smell travels 30 inches through the air. This problem has occurred every visit to Ootoya, so it wasn’t just a one-day mistake.

As far as I know this is a Japanese place that came from Japan. When I was craving for some Japanese style donkatsu, a friend of mine who lived in Japan for his childhood recommended this place for having great donkatsu, but with a price tag. So I went. I was a Sunday night, and it was pretty packed and I waited about 30 – 40 minutes before getting a seat on the bar. I ordered pork belly as appetizer, and ordered donkatsu, the main reason why I was there. I thought the food was very good. Pork belly was well cooked. Donkatsu was perfectly friend and very crispy with very good quality of pork in it. Well, I thought it was a bit too expensive for the food I have had for the night, but it shouldn’t be bad to take a trip back here once in a while.

Despite any shortcomings with service, the food sets remains consistently delicious, reasonably priced, and well portioned, so it’s hard to give it any less than 4 stars. As far as I know, they do not take reservations for prime time such as 8pm on a weekday. There’s never not been a wait but they can take your number or you can wait on the long bench area. This includes the bar seating — it’s not first come first serve. The last time I visited, there were no Japanese servers or hostess to be seen and the staff came across as somewhat unprofessional. Food — I always go for the set option. I’m a fan of the Kaisen don and pork hot pot. The katsu don seem a bit meh since it’s fried and then drenched in sauce rendering the fried part soggy. The dessert — mochi/ice cream/red bean — is ok. It could be a bit more delicate.

I went for lunch with a friend at this place on a Sunday. They dont take reservations, but you can usually get a seat if you went right at opening time at 11:30 am. Be warned, the seats are usually all filled within 15 minutes of opening, and then you might have to wait 20 mins for someone to finish eating. The food is EXCELLEnt. I ordered the pork belly cutlet, and they were succulent and savory, with a slight hint of smokey flavor. As I chew, it feels like the meat is melting in my mouth, setting off an explosion of flavor. The egg tofu that came with the meal was creamy and flavorful. The miso soup and salad was only decent, but they are not the main part of the meal so whatever. I also ordered an additional poached egg along with my meal, and it was smooth and silky like an oyster. Delicious! The décor is very traditional japanese themed, with bamboo, asian lamps, and japanese art work. The wait staff is nice and friendly. We also met a nice Japanese couple sitting by us who explained parts of the menu to us and offered some recommendations! Will definitely be visiting this place again.

My friend made us a reservation and although the whole party was not present, they had no issue seating me first. The table for two is unfortunately a little cramped and very close to the neighboring couple tables; there’s really no privacy of conversation. Service was fabulous and the meal was really wonderful. It’s certainly more Japanese comfort food with the set meals rather than sushi rolls. I absolutely loved it. Yuzu Poochi Poochi($ 9): Sparkling sake mixed with yuzu sake. Tasty! Great apertif. Salmon Sushi($ 19): Pressed Scottish salmon sushi — 6 pcs — raw, seared, and seared with mayonnaise and basil sauce. This thing was PHENOMENAL. This was the highlight. I usually don’t roll with seared fish because I love them raw, however, this seared salmon had a wonderful texture and the flavor from the mayo/basil sauce was fantastic. Homemade Tofu w/World Selected Salt($ 6): Delicious, delicious tofu. Who doesn’t like housemade tofu? I guess if you didn’t like tofu — you’re missing out! Very silky and creamy and I loved the selection of salts available for flavorings. I prefer having salt to season my tofu instead of soy sauce, etc. Bara Chirashi Don(Set $ 29): Sashimi of Blue Fin tuna, amberjack, scallop, Scottish salmon, simmered sea eel, simmered shrimp, egg, and salmon roe atop sushi rice. Fabulous Chirashi. I loved all the sea creatures in this bowl. Sushi rice plus raw seafood makes me really happy in any form. The set comes with miso soup, housemade pickles, and steamed egg custard(Chawanmushi). For the two additional dollars with meals, it’s completely worth it! All of the accompaniments that make up the set is delicious.

Ootoya is a great place to visit if you are in the mood for some traditional Japanese comfort food in a traditional type of setting. The place looks amazing and really gives a sense like I am not in New York anymore. I was seated fairly quickly as I continued to admire the place. I ordered the Tororo Oyako Don which is grilled free range chicken and onion is simmered in dashi broth and later wrapped with layer of custard like egg. Japanese grated yam is poured over the dish served with Miso soup and a nice chicken jelly texture soup. This was a different experience than I ever had in a usual Japanese restaurant. The chicken was moist and tasted delicious as each bite left me wanting more. Ootoya Menu is vast and offers a range of food from Soba to Hotpot to Sushi Bowls to Don(Rice Bowls) that I had. I would recommend this place if you are looking for a casual place to try some Japanese comfort food with a surprisingly entertaining presentation look no further. Check out Ootoya.
