Pop Up Yoga NYC

I have never heard of Pop Up Yoga NYC, but I am definitely an exercise pop up junkie, so I was pretty excited to attend one of their recent events (Feb 2, 2016) held in conjunction with W Hotel and Sound Off.
The yoga practice was held in one of the ballrooms in the W Hotel Union Square location. And what is really awesome about this yoga session is that Sound Off provides DJ music for the class through headphones. I know what you are thinking, «how does that even work to have headphones on while being in downward dog?» And at first, I was pretty skeptical that this concept would work, but I attended a previous Sound Off Yoga event last year, and it worked out extremely well (and the headphones do not fall off). The yoga class got started 15 minutes later than planned because so many people actually showed up (not expected by the organizers) for this event, and the organizers were trying hard to squeeze everyone in. So this was definitely a «mat-​to-​mat» class, so hopefully you’re comfortable practising this way (I am ok with this, as a New Yorker, I am used to cramped spaces).
Once everyone was settled in, the yoga instructor got down to business and it was a solid class. There were yogis here of all levels, so the instructor was able to tailor poses for beginners and more advanced students. I really like that there is a DJ spinning upbeat tempos (mainly house and top 40) and simultaneously you have the soothing voice of the instructor coming through the headphones. Class ran about 15 minutes over the posted time, but most people did not mind.
This event sponsored by yoga apparel vendor (tanya-​b yoga lifewear), Agua Brand hydration (I did not like the the taste of the drink, tasted very artificial), Hickies (modern lacing system that replaces shoelaces), Mama Chia products, Pretzel Crisps, and a few others.
This yoga event will cost you a pretty penny ($ 35 but with 10% discount), but they did gave away goodie bags after the event. This was a BYOM event and bathrooms weren’t too convenient and walking around in the hotel’s public bathroom with bare feet could be a germophobes nightmare come true. But, overall, it was worth it to experience yoga through headphones with a like-​minded community.

I attended two events, one at pushcart and one at modca. The instruction was great. My skill level is intermediate, and I brought along a friend who had never done yoga. We both felt like the class was great for our levels. And I love that it’s all for a good cause, and had really positive energy.

Checked out Pop Up Yoga at Seward Park on the Lower East Side on Tuesday and it was a really great experience. I’d never done yoga outdoors before and was excited to finally try it out. The instructor was lovely, making sure to introduce herself to everyone in the class prior to beginning and thanking us each personally upon the class’s completion. The class itself was good! Perfect for literally any experience level, as the instructor let us all know how to modify each pose. Also just loved doing the yoga outside in general, with the fresh air and the setting sun it was really a beautiful atmosphere to be a part of.
5 stars to Pop Up Yoga for providing busy NYC residents with a free, fun way to relax!

I love Pop Up Yoga for the Intimate classes, good teachers, and unconventional environments (my personal favorite are the coffee shop pop up classes), It’s a great way to meet other yogis in neighborhoods around the city… perhaps neighborhoods you may not otherwise frequent (ie art galleries in Chelsea, bars in the lower east side, or in the open air at Dekalb market in Brooklyn.) Always a great experience and comes highly recommendended!

I was visiting a friend in NYC who took me to Pop Up Yoga. It was a great time!
Good for beginners (like me) or for experts (like my friend).
I only I wish I lived closer so that I could attend more events!

Usually, the only yoga I do is stretching to grab my beer when I’ve set it on the coffee table too far away from the couch.
However, I attended a pop up yoga class at Modca and had the best time! The instructor gave us options on how to do each pose and allowed us to go further if we felt comfortable or do an easier version if we were struggling. I brought a friend along and we both felt very relaxed and limber afterwards. It was a ton of fun and I’ll definitely be going back to some of their other classes. I love that they offer them all over the city in multiple boroughs! Props to Pop Up Yoga!
