To be honest, I always feared going into a small art gallery. I figured someone would follow me around, hoping I’d buy something expensive. But recently there was an exhibit called«Richard Steinheimer: A Passion For Trains» at the Robert Mann Gallery. I love trains, and I knew this photographer’s work. So I ventured down to 11th Avenue &25th Street to this gallery. The first surprise is that almost the entire building at 21011th Ave is occupied by art galleries. In fact, many of the blocks around this building, house interesting art galleries. The Robert Mann Gallery is one large room, well lit, and the photographs(23 of them) nicely displayed. Outside of a cheery«hello» when I entered, I was free to enjoy the photos, even sit for a bit if I so desired. No one followed me, or asked me any questions. Richard Steinheimer filmed in black & white, and the photos are mostly of steam and diesel locomotives and lonely train stations in all sorts of weather. It brought memories of old time railroading. When I inquired about the photos, I was shown a booklet with the prices — $ 3000 to $ 4500 or so,(as best I can recall), depending on the print. But again, no sales talk. I left with a photo postcard souvenir, which was complimentary. It was a wonderful experience. The train exhibit ends January 21st, 2012, but the photos are online at their website: (212) 989‑7600

I went here the weekend before Thanksgiving. They had the David Vestal: Once Upon a Time in New York exhibit up. It’s definitely worth checking out. Most of the pictures appear to have been shot from David’s 2nd story room or a fire escape. If you’re a fan of black & white photography of an era gone by, then you’ll definitely enjoy the exhibit. My only complaint about this gallery, and almost all galleries in New York, is that they’re small — but this one is worth the visit.
