Save A Thon Stores

I’ve been going to this store since I moved to the area 5 years ago. I am a young designer here in New York and always felt a responsibility to support local businesses. The two older gentleman (African American/​Spanish) and the ladies have been amazing! Their customer service always make me feel at home! They are always amazed to see my growth! But, there is this one man (tall caucasian) who always dismisses me in the store. I can ask him a question and he’ll answer in a manner that I am not welcomed in the store. Today I decided to pick up some fabric for a special project, and asked if I can purchase some fabric he had stored in the corner, he refused to sell it to me, stating that it was not yet in inventory. Mind you, he eagerly offered to sell fabric from the same pile to a woman a few seconds before I asked. I asked him «when will they put it out so I know when to come back» he answers «when we have space» and walked away. I am very disappointed in the way I was treated today. I really enjoyed shopping at this place!

Check the table in front of the store for discounted patterns. Got a $ 13 pattern for $ 3.

Recently visited this location in Harlem. The prices are very good. But the selection is lacking-​kind of hit or miss.
I do recommend you stop by and see what catches your eye. I was looking for material for a dress and found nothing that caught my eye. But the have some nice selection just wish they had more variety. Did get a few odds and ends but nothing that I was looking for the projects I’m currently looking to start.
The upstairs is mainly crafts. They also have some nice Wilton products but again I didn’t find what I needed.

Before we left PHL, i began looking at places where i might find some great deals on fabric. Reviews from others suggested I might expect poor service, not the case for me on the 4^th of July weekend, and it was fun to laugh w/​another customer who was buying R/​W/​B glittery tulle to make her dog a parade tutu! Our timing was great, since there was an inventory sale that offered 20% of end-​of-​bolt fabrics. The African prints, while not plentiful, were wonderful. I also found a lovely cotton print that was 60″ wide and bolt end. Two pcs. of upholstery, over a yard on each, were a mere $ 2.50. Will seek this place whenever I have a chance to visit the city.

I just had my machine serviced at the East Harlem Save-​a-​thon and it was both reasonable and hugely improved my use of the machine! Great service, thanks Mr. Kane!

I love the prices here! There’s a moderate selection but the fabric quality is great and so are the prices. There’s plenty sewing and craft supplies which is rare to find in this area. The staff is pleasant and friendly except for one fucking asshole that would harass me sexually despite me telling him I’m underage and uninterested in his creepy advances. His name was Eric. thank God I haven’t seen him the last few times I went.

Cannot believe a store like this exists. While I was on the first floor, an employee was mopping with this sickeningly sweet cleaning fluid that permeated the space. (The large swath of black scuffs remained on the floor.) There was a sewing class going on in the back and there is also a space in the back for upholstery classes apparently. That whole area looked like a disorganized mess. There were fabrics on sale that looked filthy! Nothing appealed to me on this floor. I walked up the stairs, lined with oversized plastic Coke bottle banks. (Huh?) This floor was just as bad. There were cake decorating supplies, yarn, knit and crochet items, and lots of household items (why?). Nothing looked like quality supplies to me. The entire time I was there, not one employee greeted me.

If it was not for people like jane n Lilly, that work there, the store would get 1 star. Jane teaches upholstery, n she is really good at teaching. She knows her stuff. Lilly is the sewing teacher n she is extremely nice n knowledgable at her trade. The rest of the staff seem to have an attitude. Like they rather be somewhere else.

I used to shop here for yarn, but now that climbing up and downstairs is an issue for me, I don’t feel like going out of my way to go to this store. The branch on Flatbush Avenue, near Kings Plaza, is more easily accessible for those of us who are disabled.

This place has awesome prices for fabric! They have a lot of accessories too for sewing. I also crochet and have been here to pick up yarn! Also great prices! What’s amazing is that they have these great warehouse sales once in a blue and the prices are crazy cheap! Can’t wait for that!
The place can be a bit overwhelming at first but all you need to do is ask for help. First floor is fabric and sewing. Second floor is crocheting and cake making and other crafts. This place doesn’t get enough credit. There aren’t many craft stores in Manhattan. Wish they would open more locations (like maybe one on 125^th Street! ;-)
They even have free classes at their different locations! I’m heading to the free sewing class!
The staff was also very nice to me. Even though I had no idea what I was doing.
For fabric you grab what you like and bring to the big table in the middle of the room and ask for your yards.

Kane, the manager was very attentive and welcoming. Very nice staff and the prices were great! I would definitely recommend this store to anyone who sews, bakes or crafts!

Bought a groupon for a class here and was very happy. The instructor Lily is incredibly articulate, very patient and extremely pleasant to learn from. She spent time going over each student’s issues and tried to teach us the maximum possible in a limited amount of time. They have a full course of 5 sessions I’m going to take. My only complaint with the store (classes are in the back of the store) is that the place is really freezing cold and the folding chairs are very uncomfortable to sit on for any length of time while you are sewing. Wear your warmest sweater!

The women in the cake supply area are lovely and helpful. It can be challenging if you are using a deal — prepare to wait. Each certificate needs to be verified by one person in an office far, far away. Merchandise goes from abundant to scant quickly. Call if you are searching for a specific item such as 8oz of black wilton fondant. Convenient location.

Bought a $ 175 for $ 100 Unilocal deal for Save A Thon Stores. I shopped at the East Harlem location. The staff was incredibly patient while I meticulously spent down my voucher (you must spend it in one visit). This is my all-​time favorite place to shop for fabric. They carry very inexpensive home decorator fabrics and some decent apparel fabrics. It is my go-​to store for Halloween costume supplies. I never miss a Warehouse Sale.
The only downside is that the classes are held in the back of the store which is a little grubby. Unfortunately the open house I attended was facilitated by a not so well-​versed ‘teacher’. Otherwise, they deserve 5 stars!

I like this place and the staff have always been nice. They leave you alone to browse but are willing to help find an item. Great selection of very reasonably priced fabric. I mainly buy fabric for making kids clothing and costumes. They have all of the basic zippers, elastic etc. I haven’t purchased any but they have a nice selection of upholstery fabric. The upstairs has some crafty stuff and I always find something fun to bring home for my kids art projects.

I forgot to show the cashier my 10 percent coupon before checking out. I apologized because I wasn’t paying attention. However, they made a fuss over nothing. I feel like I my apology was in vain because of manager felt the need to come back to say something to me I already apologized

Save A Thon has proven useful in gathering supplies for my ridiculous Halloween costume ideas time and time again.
Last year after my colleague and I decided to go as Rosie and Sophia Grace for Halloween, I ventured to Save A Thon where I was able to purchase yards on yards of tulle for only $.99 a yard.
This year after being inspired by Miley Cyrus’s classy VMA performance, I wanted to find fabric that would serve as a good base for the grotesque teddy-​themed leotard. Once again, I found exactly what I was looking for. For $ 4.99 a yard I snagged some awesome, grey furry fabric– perfect for the trainwreck that will be this costume.
While I’m dedicated to ridiculous Halloween costumes, I prefer to spend as little as possible and Save A Thon helps me do just that every single time as it’s like the Marshalls of fabric and craft supplies. Sure, you may have to do some digging to find the right colour thread in a giant bin, but you’ll score 4 spools for a $ 1. In addition to all kinds of art and craft materials, the store sells seasonal decorations, at a fraction of what you might end up paying at Michael’s. They even sell party supplies and kitschy things one might want for themed get-​togethers. They were selling a huge box of Jesus shot-​glasses (?) for $ 2.99– I’m not sure what they were exactly but there was probably potential there.
The staff is a little rough around the edges but they’re helpful. Know what you want before you line up to get your fabric cut, they don’t have much patience for hesitation and will get snippy with you (pun intended). I used the discount that came as a result of checking in with Unilocal (10% off) and they were perfectly pleasant in honoring it.
I look forward to more visits inspired by questionable Halloween costume choices.

This store sucks. Every time I go in there are very few cake decorating supplies and when I try to use a coupon I always have to wait 5 to 10 minutes for a manager to approve. Really, update your system. Also I was given a hard time for using my husband credit card. Because he has to sign, where’s the pin pad??? I usually go to Michaels but this was a last minute stop. I would never come back to this run down store ever again.

This is store is more for home crafts and not fashion sewing. If you want fabrics you can make clothes with, dont come here.
But if you are looking for cheap curtain fabrics, very cheap notions or cheap bunches of muslin, come here! The second floor is entirely dedicated to handcrafts.

I like this place. Not gonna lie, I read the reviews before coming and was a bit nervous. But 1^st off I’m going to Harlem to a place called «Save A Thon’ I’m not expecting Louboutin service.
Nice selection, nothing fancy. Buttons a little low. But really great selection for any crafts you want. And they offer various decorating classes. Cool!
I had 2 people help me and both were completely pleasant. I left with a smile and some new cutesy fabrics. I’m a fan.
