Sonny’s is kind of ridiculous, but that’s why I like it. Great views, good(overpriced, of course) cocktails. Really, just come for the view and a drink. The décor is tacky in a kind of self-deprecating way, like an old-timey candy shoppe meets South Beach. The crowd is fairly yuppie/Hamptons/pretentious. Lots of polo shirts and white pants, but you’ll fit in fine in any semi-upscale evening/club attire.

These people are crooks. Pretentious, racist, crooks. I was a fool for going and you would have to be crazy to go here. Avoid at all costs. I would not wish this experienc on my worst enemy. I would be stunned if this place is in business in six months.

Visited Sonny’s Soda Shoppe on a Saturday evening in August. Definitely had some great views of the city! However, it was a huge hassle to get in. We had a reservation and were still treated quite rudely. Food cost was a bit over the top. The pizzas were very small. They ran out of gelato as well. Isn’t that the point of a soda shoppe?

Rooftop bar for friend’s bday, just hip-happening enough for a coming-of-age celebration. Great experience because of great company, but nothing to write home about.

The view at this rooftop bar is amazing. One of the best views of the city for sure. The place is nicely furnished and decorated with taste. I think we went there on a Sunday night and it was pretty empty. The cocktails are really, really, really good. Overall everything is stylish, including the waiters and the DJ and the patrons. Not giving five stars as it is truly expensive and it is closing too early in the night.

I dined at Isola on Sunday and the host was very rude said we needed reservations or to be guest of the hotel. I have been recommending people here and I will no longer do so.

Horrible Management — Do not book an event here! After reading a plethora of bad reviews, I trusted a recommendation from a friend and booked a birthday party at Sonny’s. I confirmed with the special events manager and she forgot to schedule my reservation! It was a hassle to deal with the staff where everyone’s attitude is «that’s not my job.» Service is not their goal obviously. The team here needs a course on communication. The views are great but there are many other rooftop bars with views just as good!

The latest hottest downtown spot ! hands down the view is unbeatable. one side you got midtown view and another side you got downtown view ! Crowd is a little bit over the top, dress to impress type. however doesn’t mean you won’t get in if you don’t dress nice. just need connection. hence, be patient to wait online. I gave 5 stars simply for the freshness, overall experience with waiting, hassle to get in. it’s probably not my type of thing, certainly not a place I will go every weekend, but it’s nice to experience one or twice !

Why did you go changing on me? They had renovated the former«Soaked at the Mondrian Soho» to «Sonny’s Soda Shoppe». I don’t like the new décor. It is tacky with the candy stripes. Gelato instead of popcorn? Wicker chairs instead of white sofas? Where are the healthy drinks? It use to feel like a hipster penthouse party but now feels like some touristy themed rooftop lounge. The crowd has deteriorated significantly. People just weren’t dressed up or overwhelmingly attractive this time and there were way too many couples. No one was dancing either. Just taking selfies and photo shoots of themselves on the roof. And the music. .. there was a reason these people weren’t dancing. Door is super easy. There is a faux black rope and the lady asks«do you have a reservation» or «are you a guest of the hotel» to everyone but she *still* lets them all in. It made me wonder if she was asking for statistical purposes. Like to see how many hotel guests actually make use of the rooftop? Or do hotel guests get a voucher for a free drink? A separate elevator, perhaps? Because if it was to pretend to be exclusive, make people wait longer instead. Let that anticipation and frustration grow. Make that line grow. Use headsets or walkie talkies and pretend you are communicating with upstairs and then let them in after a good long wait. At least pretend with flair. Tilt the head and ponder, be hesitant, and then let them in reluctantly like you aren’t sure. Make them feel«lucky». At least they served pizza. We had some and it sucked(don’t you have an Italian restaurant on the ground floor?). One of the bouncers asked us if he could have a slice. That was inappropriate and took me aback. Despite all this, I still give this place four stars for the wrap-around view of Manhattan, floor-to-ceiling windows, multiple balconies and for well, being located in the Mondrian Soho. I can’t argue with real estate. But why, why did you go changing on me? Actually, please change back.

Was excited to check out Sonny’s after hearing about the soda float drinks. Now having been… I don’t think I’d ever go back. GETTINGIN As all the other reviews have stated, the place is extremely pretentious. The entrance is on the other side of the hotel(not the green plant covered way) and they ask you to wait in line… even in the middle of a lazy saturday afternoon. when the place is dead empty upstairs. got the same snotty hostess attitude«do you have a reservation» and«are you guests of the hotel». … Now, if I was actually a guest of the hotel I’d be pretty peeved if I had to exit my room, take the elevator all the way down to the lobby, EXIT the hotel and stand in line — instead of just taking the elevator to the rooftop. Oh, did I also mention there were at least 2 other checkpoints? After getting the ok from the first hostess, we were told to wait again about 5 steps later, this time in front of the doors. Then again, before boarding the elevator where we were checked by another bouncer for our stamps. After all of that, I expected to find the most amazing magical soda shop /rooftop /bar /whatever… but it was really just a small turfed balcony and an interior space with a tiny bar. i will say — views are amazing — it is a highrise in soho after all! THEDRINKS we go to the bar and asked for the blood orange gelato float. immediately, the bartender then responds«oh…don’t order it, it’s really not that good». …way to totally kill the vibe of this place. we tried the vagabond and dolce verde on his recommendation, both of which were watered down and bland. to add insult to injury, when closing the tab, the bartender decided to include his own tip without it actually being noted on the bill. um, what? since when do you ADDYOUROWNTIP? I mean, I know america is tip crazy and all but this is a whole ‘nother level. we also tried the affogato bambino(downright disgusting) and the chinotto(tastes like sangria). while we sipped on our drinks, we couldn’t help but stare at two girls stage an endless photo shoot of each other on the roof. i think that about sums up this place — if you like to plaster an «i’ve been there» all over social media and couldn’t care less about actually enjoying yourself /having a drink at the venue, Sonny’s is the place for you.

Simply the best views of manhattan at night that I’ve seen. The entrance is hard to find and slightly complicated but it was worth the patience. The crowd was well dressed and fancy(we actually bumped into Bob Geldof!) and perhaps a little bit pretentious but if you don’t judge them you can pretend they’re not judging you so no problems. The cocktails were fun and in keeping with the vintage summer theme and the bar tenders had good banter. Music was only slightly louder than average but at least they played some excellent tunes!

I requested a reservation through the Sonny’s Soda Shoppe website weeks in advance for 3 people and received an email stating«all parties under 5ppl are at the doorman’s discretion.» Fine. I arrived with two friends at 6:15pm on a Wednesday night and we were told it would be a 10 minute wait(their website says they open at 6pm). We waited in the hotel lobby bar for 30 minutes(checking in with the staff about the rooftop opening every 10 minutes) until we realized a line had been forming outside, which they apparently«forgot to mention.» We then stood on line and were told by other patrons that now the opening would be at 7:00pm. At 7:15pm they started letting in groups of people standing behind us with no information about when we could possibly get in, despite the fact that there were no more than 20 people outside, and we had been the first people there. My friend went to talk to the bouncer again and he inexplicably kept touching her arms in a flirtatious and invasive manner, saying«don’t worry about it, you’ll get in soon.» At this point we were so fed up with the mistreatment, misinformation, and poor communication from the hostess and bouncer that we left. The entire process of opening so late — seemingly only to create an air of exclusivity/self-importance– was a ridiculous show for the small group of people waiting outside. We patronized a lovely, friendly French restaurant across the street. No rooftop is worth that kind of drama.

I absolutely agree with the first reviewer. Two of my girlfriends were finding places to check out during the summer for rooftop bars and decided to try out this one. They told us to head over after they waited in line and entered the rooftop. There was a small line when we got there about 30 minutes later. The hostess asked us(two gay dudes) if we had a reservation(we said no) and if we were guests of the hotel(no, again) and because of this we weren’t allowed to enter. We asked our girlfriends and they said they were never asked those questions and that the bar was mostly women and very pretentious people with a good rooftop view. Afterwards, when our friends left with us to find another place, there was a male and female couple in line and were let in without any of the questions we were asked. Overall, unless you like pretentious crowds with a sexist,(possibly racist) staff, I would HIGHLYSTAYAWAY from this place! There are way better rooftop bars with great views, pleasant crowds, and friendlier staff than this place.

The most pretentious, full of themselves crowd I’ve ever seen. From the power hungry woman at the front door to the obnoxious people upstairs. Stay away. Just stay away!!!
