Who doesn’t love a good soup place? House of Soup is tucked away on one of the side streets in the Ironbound. Parking can be tricky as it seems to be street parking only, and navigating is a bit finicky due to all of the double parking going on. I couldn’t have picked a better day to check out this place as it finally feels like winter around here. I dropped in a little before noon, and the place was empty with no staff in sight. A woman came out from the back room, and handed me a menu that described what soup they have. Heads up, there is a language barrier but don’t let that deter you. The woman was incredibly nice and helpful through our very little non-verbal communication. I decided to go with the beef and yucca soup(I can’t recall the name). It is one of the soups that they have daily. They also have special soups each day of the week. I got a small soup($ 5), which was actually quite large. They also serve the soup with a few slices of(seemingly) day old bread. The soup smelled divine, and I couldn’t wait to get back to the office to gobble it up. A thick broth that I wished had more yucca and beef in it, however the pieces I did get were yummy, melt in your mouth goodness. The crusty bread was perfect to throw in the soup to soak up all the delicious broth. I couldn’t have picked anything better for a cold, blustery day. I’ll definitely be back to check out some of their other soups!

Do good. Sometimes there’s a language barrier, but you’ll muddle through. Get some containers full of soup to pack as lunches.

This place is great! Came here a couple of times right before closing and they only had a couple different soups, still pretty good. Then I came here in the afternoon and was blown away by the wide variety of soups! Each looked better than the next, hard to pick! Place is clean and staff is friendly!

This is a little gem tucked away on one of the side streets in Ironbound. The proprietor doesn’t speak any English so if you don’t speak Portuguese, you’ll have to fumble your way through just looking at the soup and deciding if it fits what you need. However, I’ve had 3 of their soups and they’ve all been really good so I don’t think you can really go wrong. The best one though, was a cream and spinach soup with sausage and thick cut bacon. The garlicky, creamy flavor and texture was outta this world. I also tried the chicken empanada and it was excellent. They are made when you order them so be prepared to wait, but its worth it. Definitely a spot to try if you are in the area. The ONLY complaint I have is that the bread they give you with the soup is usually a little stale.

It’s the only option around for soups. They have every day about 5 – 8 different soups. It’s really tasty and perfect for NJ winter time. It is well spiced and usually they have at least one vegetarian option. Brazilian pastry available upon request and they also have ‘special’ food everyday. Such as rice, beans one meat and a couple sides. Very reasonable price.
