This place is nothing like ir used to be. We waited forever for our food and when it finally came it was horrible. You would think that since we were with sucg a large party and the get a huge tip by default, that we would have received better service. $ 167.00 worth of disgusting food. Never again

The food was not as good as I thought it would be. I had heard so much about the food but it was just OK to me. I had the oxtail, macaroni and cheese, sweet potatoes. The portions could have been larger. The cornbread was very good. I can’t speak about the service because I did take out

John’s is my favorite soul food restaurant. The experience of visiting this restaurant has never let me down. It’s good to eat in or take out! Although I was not feeling the corn bread(It was a little dry but my friend raved about it). The Potato Salad is awesome… I like the chops,(Fried and smothered) The Smothered Steak(with gravy and onions) while a little pricey is awesome. The string beans, apple cobbler, coconut cake, are all delicious. Oh yes it is in the hood… hood… hood but the service is great and the food is good!

I should have stayed home and cooked for myself. The price was to high for the food. The cornbread was dry… there was to much butter/oil in the mac and cheese you can see a puddle… I had the fried catfish… I actually was expecting an actual catfish with the head. The food was eatable though after I made some adjustments to it. I am not going back…

The food was pretty good here. I had the fried catfish, greens, macaroni and cheese. The cornbread was homemade(no Jiffy box here) and it was a hearty size. I didn’t care for the uptown tea(it was too sweet for me) and I like sweet. The wait staff was fast and friendly. I even got a chance to meet the owner. A bonus is that security is extra tight.(LOL) I went late night and closed the place down, so he even walked us to our car. I will definitely make it back when I’m in the hood for some soul food.

5 or 6 years ago this would have been a 4 star place for southern food in N.J. It’s still ok.

Pretty good food. If you like southern cooking, this is a good spot to try. The wait staff is very friendly too. Mac & Cheese, and their sweet tea — Delish!

The food here is quite good. Home made biscuits, fried cat fish, grits, collard greens and much much more. Be on the look out for the sweet tea. It seems as thought someone is the kitchen may try to hasten your descent into a diabetic coma some days. But alas, if the tea is too sweet, order some lemonade mix them and have yourself an uptown. Also, the wait staff may leave a little to be desired but they won’t cut you.
