Does this place need a little love? probably. okay, maybe a lot. However, have you had the chipotle chicken? That dish alone is worthy of the 4 stars. That is all.

Came here twice in the bar area: once after a haunted house event and another after a hike. Their margaritas are good and well portioned. Tried my friend’s fajita burrito and that was good, too. Their free chips and salsa are tasty. The servers in the bar area are very chatty, but friendly and helpful. There is a jukebox in the bar area and they have trivia(with a buy in) on Wednesday nights and karaōke on, I believe, Fridays. One downside is both times I was there, friends who had ordered drinks or a meal were not able to get what they originally ordered since they were out of it. The first visit was later on a Saturday night(9pm) and the second was near evening on Saturday(5:30pm). Generally, this doesn’t happen to me twice at an establishment, so that’s something to keep in mind. I have gone to Azards and Magoos in the area, and the Alamo is a good alternate, especially since they have a separate bar area from the restaurant.

Where to start! I’ve got it. My message to the owner of The Alamo; Please go to Don Cuco Mexican restaurant in Moorpark and learn how it is done. We took the family to the Alamo for my Mom’s birthday about 3 months ago, waited for over an hour for our food because of another big party that was seated across the restaurant from us. When we got our food, it was cold and barely eatable. Mole was crusted and disgusting, the carnitas were really bad and we ended up leaving. Fast forward to this weekend. We so desperately want to have a great Mexican restaurant within walking distance from our house, so we walked over to The Alamo, forgetting the past experience. We got seated at a table with chairs that were practically falling apart. After getting re-seated, we realized that it was over 80 degrees in there. My wife and my daughter ordered the eggs and tamales. They only have one type of tamale, beef, which they pre make or buy somewhere else, so my wife substitutes it for an enchilada. I ordered the carnitas… I got gray soggy carnitas, and my wife got horribly overcooked eggs. After two tries to get better eggs, we give up. Other observations. The booths need a paint job, the carpet was torn is multiple places, and the chairs were falling apart, and did I say it was hot? The music is way to loud in the restaurant, but everyone is having a blast at the bar! Chips, Salsa, and a great Margareta, good service, and great Mexican food, is that too much to ask for??? I guess so! Sad face :(

Our first visit was 2pm on a Thurs afternoon. Twelve«Ladies who Lunch» were having a Bday party and were on their 4th cocktail :) Only a few other tables were occupied. The friendly efficient waitress brought out warm tortilla chips & mild salsa as soon as we sat down. We only waited 15 minutes for the meal. The Carnitas plate came with refried beans, guacamole, fresh pico de gallo & soft tortillas. Very good flavor and moist. The Tres Enchiladas were very good as well. We just moved into the neighborhood and will come again. Looking forward to trying the Tex-Mex night.

Saturday dinner was off. Maybe the staff was short or changed because of the Thanksgiving weekend. Wife could not finish the tasteless burrito. Young man asked if we wanted more chips and salsa. We said yes, then he never returned. Still love the Alamo and hope management will read this review.

Probably a 3.5 star, but I just can’t say«I’m a Fan» any longer. * Restaurant: buffet is really only worthy on Friday, where they go full-tilt on an expansive list. * Service: nice, but scarce. * Bar: divey 10 years ago: great. now: okay. 10 years ago: you say Alamo, and I say I’m there already, where at ya? now: go without me.

Take out deal has declined. Chicken was dry over cooked and looked more like a small game hen then a chicken. Chips are no longer included. Owner called after he returned and offer me another meal. I will try again and post the review.

This was my boyfriend and I’s second time at The Alamo. The first time we sat with two other friends in the bar area and although everyone was nice, the service was very very slow. My boyfriend and I decided to try it again, but sat in the dining area(around the corner) and the experience was perfect. Raul was our server and he is the sweetest, most attentive, and helpful server I have ever seen. He helped us with our groupon and was quick to serve us and check up on us. The food was amazing — I ordered the Original Alamo burrito($ 10) and my boyfriend ordered the Burrito Del Mar($ 15). The burritos are very large proportions. We also ordered the funnel fries(SOSO delicious!!). Make sure to ask for Raul!

Okay so the to-go window is a totally different world than the restaurant. This is for the to-go window. This is dirt cheap and amazingly delicious. Bean and cheese burrito is sub-$ 1.50 and a taco is sub-$ 3(bigger than a street taco btw) and cheese enchilada is like sub-$ 2.50 ish. And it’s shockingly good food for that price. Yeah, you can get full plates and those are pricier but let’s you’re like me and a college student and want to get full on the change you have in your car. Come here, done. Call ahead, it takes deceptively but not problematically long(like 10 minutes, not biggie). Also, if like my parents, you came her twenty years ago and had terrible experiences, yes it’s under new management as of a few years ago, give it another shot.

Finally made it over here on a Groupon deal last night. I had heard about it from a friend for years. I went with the Tex-Mex buffet when I saw they had Beef Ribs. Amazing! Everything they had out was really flavorful and fresh. I also loved the Cheese Enchiladas and Roasted Corn as well. So good. My wife had the Shrimp Fajitas. Everything on our table was fantastic. It’s a traditional, family-style Mexican restaurant and they do it all wonderfully, I couldn’t have been more impressed. The ambience is great, the service was top notch and the lively Cantina portion of the restaurant even had the Dodgers game on. A+++. What a find for us, we’ll be back.

OMG! Talk about the best Taco Tuesday ever! Regular size tacos for $ 1 all day every Tuesday. And just found out from our waitress that on Margarita Monday’s, they serve Margaritas from open to close for only $ 3, street tacos are $ 1 and regular tacos are $ 2. What a deal. I think I just found my new hangout spot for my girlfriends.

Dropped in for the 2nd time this year today for lunch. Last time it was more or less so-so for a free standing Mexican restaurant. Today we went in with a $ 20 Groupon coupon which I bought yesterday for $ 12. So we expected a roughly 40% savings if we could keep it right at $ 20 — which is what they had on the menu for a burrito. However, we saw they had a lunch buffet for $ 8. This included cheese enchaladas, a taco option with ground beef and chicken, simple salad + rice and two kinds of beans. We added iced tea for $ 2.75 and out tab was some $ 2.16 above the $ 20 Groupon voucher. Out net was thus $ 22.14 but out of pocket was $ 14.14… a good deal for a buffet with beverage. Anyways — service was good but the dining table booths were just a bit tight — and we’re not overweight by any means of comparison?! Sigh. Anyways I find that I might be going back again for their buffet at regular price again — but if I can get that Groupon coupon again I will… and you should too. Drat — I didn’t take any pictures becuse my battery on the phone was dead… oh well. ;-)

In short, the food is good but somewhat expensive. I’ve always been a fan of their fajitas, which will cost $ 15 for steak or chicken or $ 18 for seafood. Their portion sizes are large, and the chips and salsa they give you are great(ask for the spicy salsa if you’re game!). However, that being said, we came on Monday for lunch and the place was deserted. Maybe 4 tables sat in total with one server. She honestly couldn’t care less about the service she was providing — walked past empty water cups multiple times, never stopped to check on us once, and wasn’t in any hurry to pick up our check. While she was off neglecting her tables, the gentleman that appeared to be a busser/food runner was extremely friendly and helpful! He refilled our chips and salsa, fetched us a variety of salsa choices, refilled our water, etc. He didn’t appear to be a server, but he was seriously going above and beyond! Props to him for stepping up where our server fell short!

What a mistake to celebrate Mother’s Day here! First time going here with a bunch of friends having dinner for Mother’s Day. The place is not inviting at all, almost a bit depressing to be honest. It’s dirty carpet and just not inviting at all. Service is not good either, takes like an hour for the food to come out after we ordered. We only went there because one of our friends bought a coupon from Groupon, but let me tell you. If a restaurant needs to short sell their food on Groupon at half of the value, what does it tell you? THEYAREDYING! And you probably should not go to a place like that to eat anyway! But our friend is very adventurous and likes to try new things. So she called in advance and confirmed that they accepted the coupon on Mother’s Day, so we all went. At the end, the manager had to come out and interrogate us whom we spoke to because they really would not accept any coupons on special days. The total bill is $ 80 and the coupon takes $ 40 away, we ended paying $ 40 plus tips. And that is really what is worth, if you are generous. The food is cold and it took forever to come! The rice and bean is cold. The Enchilada is cold! The tortilla is cold! The Fajita is fine because it’s on the grilled plate. The Margarita is sour and no good even we asked them to do it twice. So we ended up cancel the order and let the waitress took back the drink! The only thing good is the Salsa and the Chips. If you are only after a quick snack, go there for a bowl of chips and salsa. Dinner is Out Of The Question! We will not go there again. Sorry to say that but I cannot recommend this place to anyone.

We sat in the bar area, and I must firstly mention how good the service was. The bartender balanced serving the bartop & the tables expertly. On the subject of the bar, the margaritas are delicious. The table behind us had jalapeños in their margaritas, something I will have to try on my next visit. Baja Fish Tacos. They’re on the appetizer menu but I had them as my entrée and will do so again!

Quite divey for the Newbury Park area, but it’s where the corporate slaves go to de-stress. The Alamo is separated into 3 sections: outdoor, whole in the wall, with limited seating; the restaurant area, where it’s family friendly, kids allowed; and the bar, where it’s packed for happy hour. This review is for the bar area for taco Tuesday happy hour. They have a pretty good selection of the basic alcoholic beverage options, nothing fancy. I went with red sangria, and it was okay. It’s on the watered down side, and is missing the sweetness I enjoy from the fresh fruits. Taco Tuesdays are $ 1 taco nights. The tacos are not small. The crispy corn tortilla shells are coated with Parmesan cheese. Between the two options, chicken or beef, I preferred the beef. It was better seasoned and it wasn’t dry like jerky. These tacos are delicious and I can’t believe they’re only $ 1 each.

The food here is good and the prices reasonable. We usually come for happy hour and have good service in the bar area. On my last visit we had dinner and the places was busy. I noticed this place does not receive high star reviews but when ever I’m here it’s always busy and a popular place. People having a fun time and enjoying their food. The chips and salsa are good. The salsa is not too spicy but it has good flavor. Free chips and salsa bar in the bar area. Everything I have ordered has been good. Burritos, tacos, enchiladas, albondigas soup and homemade tortillas. Every Thursday you can enjoy an all you can eat BBQ buffet. They also offer Sunday champagne brunch from 10 – 3. Everyone here has been friendly, helpful and good service.
