I’ve only had one experience at Plaza Azteca and this review reflects that, even though I’ve heard of people really liking this restaurant. I went in for a late lunch and got the lunch special #10 which was a chicken enchilada and a chicken burrito. I did not notice much of a difference between their enchilada and burrito since both basically only had chicken and maybe some tomato on the inside with an enchilada sauce and cheese on top. There was also some lettuce on top, but the«pico de gallo» was basically just some quartered slices of tomato… which is not pico de gallo. The enchilada sauce tasted like the kind you’d get from a can at the grocery store. The chicken inside tasted decent but there wasnt much to the dish besides chicken, unfortunately. Usually burritos have at least some sort of beans and or rice. Like others have mentioned they could probably use a renovation and the service could have been better, but my review is just based on the food I tasted. My friend got some fajita quesadilla, which tasted a little better but the meat was overcooked.

I love Plaza Azteca, but this place disappointed me. First, it needs a makeover, bad. Second, I had the Tacos Pastore and the meat was over cooked and tough. What really surprised me was that the beans came with the dish, had pieces of hot dogs cut up in it. The salsa they served with the chips was doctored up canned tomatoes. I’ve been to their other restaurants and have always enjoyed their dishes, but this place is not for me. And take make it worse, although not the restaurant’s fault, 2 young children bantered and screamed the entire time and the parent did absolutely nothing about it.

I am a routine customer here. Absolutely the best Mexican food around. There’s also something more«homey» about this location than some of the larger and newer Plaza Azteca’s. They have excellent margaritas, and you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. They make their salsa, «white sauce», and queso fresh — as well as their own tortilla chips. Chuy and Maria are incredibly friendly and their entire wait staff is a pleasure. This location is small and can get busy on Thursdays and weekends. There is little waiting room — but they do a great job of turning tables so you are not standing idle for long. They also offer carryout. Note: This location does not have a sitting bar. Reviews that mention bartenders are probably for the location on Jefferson Ave — about 3 miles away.

My friend was there last night. As he was served his Margarita a loud fight/brawl broke out in the kitchen. The manager passed by my friend on his way to apologize to a couple at the next table. He(my friend) remarked«what am I, chopped liver?» The manager took my friends drink and told him to leave!!! He was shocked and angry as he left, but then he was surrounded by 4 officers for not paying for his drink! He explained that he had just received his drink when it was taken from him and he was asked to leave. The officers spoke with the manager who decided he did not want his money, but he is now banned from returning! What a joke! Seriously? You can’t control your unruly staff so you assert your authority over a guest trying to enjoy a night out? This is shocking and beyond unprofessional to me.

Food was good. We went on a Friday night when there was Karaōke and it was PACKED and very fun! Unfortunately, the service from the bartender wasn’t as enjoyable. She got our order wrong twice and then charged us double, which took quite a long time to fix. At one point, a guy down the bar ordered me a drink and she put it on my tab. It was just a frustrating experience, but I would go back for the food and the fun!

Worst plaza in the area. I’m not some hot chick so I guess I can’t get decent service. All the other plaza’s in the region have food similar to each other but this one seems to do whatever they want with theirs. I love Plaza but I will never return to this one. Chicken Fried Rice DOESNOT come with onions at the others, I’m allergic to them, it’d be nice if you stuck to the plaza model on your menu

This is the slowest Mexican restaurant I have ever been to! We have been waiting for our food for about 20 minutes and still counting. I had to come back in and edit my review. The refried beans are not refried(still has whole beans). The fried Chimichunga has big chunks of chicken instead of being shredded. My husband ordered the stuffed chicken and it looks nothing like the picture.

The food here is tasty and plentiful and the prices are decent, but it’s not really authentic, and has a lot of the pratfalls of chain Mexican restaurants. I eat there every once in a great while, but if you like authentic Mexican food, this is not the place to come.

It’s a Mexican restaurant for gringos. The menu definitely leans on the tex-mex side as opposed to the authentic side. The salsa, and really the food in general, are not very spicy, which probably suits the taste of most Newport Newsians. Despite lacking a flavorful kick, the food is mostly decent, but not good enough for me to make a special trip here. Pretty much the only reason you’ll find me here is to join a group for happy hour. The margaritas are not bad. The service is polite and attentive. They have a few locations around town, and one doesn’t seem any better than another.

Serving an American bastardization of Mexican food, you’ll be starting off with some stale chips and two kinds of dipping sauce. One that tastes like mayonnaise with a hint of anti-freeze, and the other tastes like vine ripened tomatoes and feet. Drinks are served in 55 gallon drums of 99% ice. For the main course, you have a choice of 12 different names for a burrito. Dessert is a delicious assortment of 10 year old vending machine candy. ENJOY!

We won’t be eating here again. 1) We wait over 25 minutes for our food and it was just barely warm. 2) We were told the chicken was shredded in the taco salad, it was not. 3) Our waiter did not check on us for a while after we got our meals, but he did check his other tables. 4) Asked for peppers in my burrito fajitas, when it came out it was almost a half a chicken breast and onions, no peppers at all.

Hands down the best Mexican around Newport News. Of all the Plaza Azteca locations in tidewater it is also the best. Always fast seating(for 7 usually), quick service, friendly and food is out fast. It is very reasonably priced for the large portions. I recommend the chimichangas dinner or for vegetarians the mushroom quesadilla!

I want to give this Plaza Azteca location zero stars for atmosphere and service, but the food is actually decent, the portions large, and the prices super cheap so I can’t. As a CNU student, I go to Plaza A LOT(but always the Jefferson Ave. location). However, I’ve been convinced to try this Warwick location a few times by friends and each time my experience has been memorably bad. The restaurant is extremely in need of updates and repairs. Plus, it is always crowded and very loud — probably because the inside of the restaurant is so very small. The wait staff, or at least the ones I get, are always very unattentive. I usually have to ask several times for something or ask another waiter as they pass by for a refill or more chips, whatever the case may be. The first time I went to this location, the group seated next to us was ridiculously drunk. They were being so loud and obnoxious that several surrounding tables asked to be moved. The manager never attended the situation. After trying to get out of paying their bill, these people got in their cars and drove off drunk(my friend and I called the cops to report their drunk driving). The only saving grace of this location is the food. I love texmex and this place serves consistently good fajitas, enchiladas, and chiles rellenos. Plus, it has a large vegetarian section. Their white sauce is out of this world good, though you have to ask for it now. The fried ice cream is HUGE and the perfect indulgence for a crappy day. However, don’t order Flan it tastes like it was dumped on the plate straight from a can; it’s just not good. So, if you want to eat decent texmex for cheap in a place with décor that screams for help and service that is lacking — this is the place for you. Otherwise, go to the classier, larger, and overall better location on Jefferson Ave. It’s only like 5 minutes away and has yet to disappoint like this location. Plus it just got renovated after being burned down by a fire so it is even nicer now than before.

Food was good, the staff was friendly and attentive. Parking is minimal and I felt cramped in this small restaurant. There are 2 other Plaza Aztecas in the city. My favorite is the one on Jefferson Avenue, just east of Oyster Point Road.

What else can I Unilocal about Plaza Azteca that hasn’t already been Unilocaled? Really, what else is there? I don’t feel like reading all of the other Unilocal because frankly some of you are Unilocaling at a 2 star level! Last time I was there there was a big display about how Natty Boh’s were $ 1.50 all day every day. And I thought the fine purveyors at Plaza Azteca couldn’t already improve on perfection. You’ve done it again! Word on the street is that a Plaza will be opening up in Northern Virginia. I will be camping out the night before opening and drinking a big beer or six!

The Burrito Rulleta is a personal favorite. As far as Mexican food goes in Virginia, this may be as good as it gets.

This place has the same track record of all Mexican food in this area, blah blah blah! There is a heavy emphasis on the white queso which is used on literally everything, to the point where it is overwhelming. The salsa had no spice whatsoever and reminded me a livened-up ketchup. The place is always packed so there must be a lot of people who don’t know good Mexican food.

Good portions and the equal of most mexican sit-down restaurants in southern california. The guac is awesome. My beef taco was just so-so. The chicken quesadilla was surprisingly delicious. I still prefer the hole-in-the-walls in San Diego, but this will have to hold me over while I’m in VA.
