Went there for a company going away today, the atmosphere was great, the place was packed the service was very quick. The issue was the food, 3 of us had different orders but when they arrived they all looked the same, in other words the food was okay. So if you go here don’t expect authentic Mexican seriously think chain!

We have frequented this location of Plaza many times on different days and at different times. Most of the time the service is good, the food is good and the atmosphere is good. Food comes out hot and quick, even when we have a large party. The reason for only two stars is because the worst night to go is on Sundays. On a couple occasions we have gotten up and left because after 5 minutes no one has come by the table to even bring to customers bowel of chips. I find it odd since any other time the chips are there as soon as your seated. We will keep going g to this location but not on sundays.

The complimentary chips and salsa are delicious! The server told us of a beer special which was nice and was prompt with taking the order. The enchiladas chipotle were amazing! I asked for extra pico and he brought me a bowl full which I loved! Amazing Mexican food!

Crap. Go here if you want the typical warmed over Mexican slop. They put on a show, but it’s all the same junk

Not impressed. Food was bland, service was horrible. We couldn’t understand the server at all. No refills. And sprinkles on flan? Come on man! Perhaps I was spoiled by the delicious Mexican in California but I could get better from taco bell. Edit to add, the chips were however warm and super delicious, and the décor was wonderful…

Stopped here for Sunday brunch, the food was excellent. Nice location, very clean restaurant. Language barrier with wait staff, I don’t speak Spanish but it is a Mexican restaurant, they still very accommodating. Drinks were good

Always great food, a lot of people I know hate on this place, but I’ve had a great experience every time.

Mediocre at best. The quality of the food has really gone down over the years.

The service was great, Margarita was tasty it was Friday night so they had a mariachi band making it’s rounds table side. The food was pretty good, want to return & try their fajitas. Overall great first time experience there.

My relationship is like one of a proud relative. I remember when Plaza was a small 20 cover restaurant nestled away on Warwick in an old Pizza Hut building. As they grew so did their menu, and their locations. In the denbigh area we were blessed when Plaza took over the old ChiChi’s, and now even more blessed with this renovated location If you didn’t know NN like I do, you could easily have thought this was a new building. The location had a clear aztec theme. The inside looked great, a step up from the old Plaza Aztecas of the old. The menu had also grown. Normally I was a chori pollo person. For years I found this to be a great way to go, but this visit, I was inspired. Inspired to venture off the beaten path and explore new choices. I went with the Tacos Al Pastor. Three Tacos on homemade tortillas, the beef having a tang blended well with the pineapple based salsa. It was a good layer of flavors. I think using mango instead of pineapple would have created a more authentic and richer flavor profile, but the pineapple did the job. I would whole heartedly recommend trying them. The service was fast and attentive. My only complaint is that some of the priced on the check did not correlate with the prices on the menu. .40¢ here or there, but it was something that happened, so keep an eye out for it.

Recently gave this place another try, and yet another letdown. We had a rather large group, which is the only thing keeping from giving just 1 star… but when someone orders the lunch fajitas and you only bring out the sizzling plate of meat and veg, WTF… where are my beans, rice, pico de gallo, and tortillas? Also, the servers never came back around to refill drinks. And this place has the nerve to tack on 20% «gratuity» automatically on parties of 5 or more. From what I’ve seen in this area, standard practice is 18% for 6 or more(though it should only be 15% if they’re going to pull that move at all).

We have gone here 3 times and every time the service has been less than impressive. The first 2 times we got the same waiter who hardly spoke to us, and didn’t seem to enjoy his job. We had to flag him down to get refills. The third time was yesterday and although we got a different waiter, it wasn’t much of an improvement. There was a party two tables down from us who he checked on twice as often as us. The waiter did get our order correct, and the food was what you’d expect at plaza Azteca normally. Except we had to ask for the white sauce with the chips and salsa when normally at the other Jefferson location they bring it out automatically. Overall I’d say go to the other one on Jefferson just a couple miles down the road, that one has consistently had much better service.

I can’t give it more than three stars. The food was ok. There was no wow factor. It taste like your everyday Mexican. The seasoning could have been better. Salsa had a tomato paste taste. It was pretty empty when we went. The service wasn’t good. He was standing at the door chatting with his coworkers the whole time. He first asked us for a refill when we were done.

Service was pretty good our waiter kept walking away so it took 45 mins to place our order. The food was amazing. I will differently come back but sit in a different selection.

We’ve been to the new location three times now and today was our final time. There were a of total of two tables with customers when we arrived. Once we were seated we waited 30 minutes before chips and salsa were even brought to our table. 20 minutes later our waiter finally came to our table. Asked what we wanted to drink and eat. I asked if it was happy hour and our waiter said yes. I asked which margaritas were included in the happy hour specials. I ordered the happy hour margarita which I didn’t get till our food arrived. My order was not even close. I asked for what I ordered and the waiter said that was what I ordered. Trust me it wasn’t! We both wanted to leave and asked for our check. Not only were charge for the wrong order, but the largest full price margarita they have. We called our waiter over and once again he said that was what I ordered. I asked for the manager and the server refused! We sat there for over 20 minutes hoping the manager to come over. We paid(sick of waiting) and told our server we won’t be back. He said good bye and see you soon. We’ll drive to Williamsburg and go back to South of the border restaurant.

I really like the décor of the new location. Very open floor plan and very contemporary looking. The experience was consistent with most Plaza’s I visit, which is very good. I read a lot of complaints about the authenticity of the food, but fortunately I’m not a Mexican food expert. What I can say is the food came out fast, tasted good and the service was friendly from hostess to manager to waitress. Sure, the food may not taste like it does at your favorite restaurante in Cancun, but it will taste good and imo at a reasonable price. Disfrute de su comida.

I won’t go on and on about how this is not authentic Mexican food, blah, blah… do people really expect to get authentic ethnic food of any kind when they pull up to a restaurant whose décor references every tired cliché? What you do get at the relocated Denbigh Plaza Azteca is good, filling food served fast in a boisterously friendly atmosphere. I was pleased to find the reimagined menu now offers some healthier dishes that contain actual vegetables and are not swimming in queso. I ordered a chopped salad called La Flaka(?) –with grilled shrimp as an add-on, it made a very satisfying dinner. The chipotle raspberry vinaigrette dressing was amazing! My dining companions had some old favorites– steak fajitas, enchiladas, and a tostada combo plate — and reported they were as expected, well-seasoned and piping hot. We had no problems with the service, so I think they must be getting the kinks worked out(glitches mentioned by previous reviewers). So, while it’s not ‘gourmet night’ — or even terribly original — we are glad to have this restaurant back in our rotation.

What can I say, if you’ve been to one Plaza Azteca you’ve been to them all. Not necessarily a bad thing. This newly opened Plaza has been completely renovated from the previous steakhouse it was. Owners threw at lot and I mean a lot of $$$$ for the redecoration. It was really clean when a group of 5 of us went to lunch right around 11pm during the week. A very large bar is provided with widescreen TVs as well. There is table and booth seating available. Tables can be arranged for large groups as needed. Our greeter offered to sit us at a booth, but suffice it to say it was rather tight for 5 grown men. We asked to move to a table for five and they didn’t hesitate to accommodate. Our waiter took all 5 orders and didn’t write a single word down. We were sure the food orders were coming back screwed up. To our surprise everything came out as ordered and boy did it come out fast, served piping hot. As I said at first — Plaza Azteca is Plaza Azteca. The food was as expected. It was fast, filling and good. But it’s not really authenticate Mexican IMO. But it is still great value for the service and food. Next time I think the wife and I will pop in at the bar and have a Margarita and see how that goes. Overall — recommended.

Plaza Azteca Denbigh at 12755 Jefferson Avenue closed in May 2014 and move to it’s new location about ½ mile north on Jefferson Ave. to 12835 Jefferson Ave. Newport News VA, in the old Steve & Johns Steakhouse. Jean and I had dinner with our friends Jen, Jim, and their friends Shirley and Don. Although the place was crowded we were able to be seated right away with no wait. Glad to see Martin is still the manager, but he had his hands full training the new staff that evening. One problem we saw was everyone, even the previous employees were in training mode and their seemed to be a lot of confusion, but I guess that’s normal for a restaurant that just reopened in a new location with a completely new set-up. The food and menu is Plaza Azteca, if you’ve eaten in any of their locations anywhere, you know the food is consistent, so you know exactly what to expect and what your going to get. We did encounter one major problem. The server placed our orders and forgot to come back to tell Jen that the order she placed was not prepped earlier, so it was not available for dinner. So we all got our dinners, and she had no food. The manager did go into the kitchen and prepare exactly what she wanted, but by the time it was ready and served to her, we had all finished our dinner. Hopefully thing have improved, so we will try them again next week.
