If you have that fancy laminated military ID card you should be shopping here. Now, I myself don’t but I’m blessed to have a retired navy Mother who likes to spoil me with gifts of fresh produce… and condiments and juice and just groceries in general. I always point out to her that I afford to feed myself, but then she says, «why should you pay so much money when I can get it cheap here?» And she’s right, the prices are rock bottom for good quality stuff. They have a decent section of staples for Asian food. Very slow to pick up organic products, but it’s been moving more towards that direction. The freshly made sushi section is pretty good if you’re shopping while hungry and want something to satisfy you as soon as you get home. Just don’t forget to tip out the baggers, they work for tips!

Every single time my wife and I shop here and use our WIC coupons, we are treated like the biggest inconveniences to ever set foot in the store, even though it’s their internal system is messed up and often rejects the foods it should accept, not to mention that the people in line are also rude as well. Besides that, the store feels dirty and unorganized. There’s only ever 2 or 3 cashiers working, so expect to stand in line for a while. Oh, and never ask where anything is… you’ll be made to feel like an idiot. By far, this is the worst commissary that we have been to. For a new family with a young baby to be treated like we are when we use WIC is unacceptable. If it’s that difficult to scan checks and food, and treat your customers with respect, then don’t accept WIC. If you ever decide to shop here, instantly punch yourself in the face repeatedly. You’ll have a better experience doing that than shopping here.

You have to be a DOD member or dependent to shop here. The people here are amazingly nice and prices are about 10−20% lower than what you pay at other locations like Shaws, Stop and Shop, etc. Selection is a little limited, but considering the size of the Newport base compared to others it isn’t bad. The thing I like best is that the store PA is set to an actual radio station instead of the standard adult contemporary that repeats the same 18 – 20 songs over and over that you’ll here at other stores.

This is on the Navy base, so if you can’t get on base, you’re out of luck. I was tipped off by a friend in my class that the commissary deli sells made to order sandwiches which are reasonably priced and very good — so I tried it out and ended up ordering a few of them while I was staying here. The selection is pretty good considering the size of the base; everything you need is there. The deli is great, again the sandwiches! And the staff is courteous enough for base staff. All in all I was impressed, but that may have been because it was a god-send to be able to come here for food that wasn’t galley food.

This commissary is located in Naval Station Newport, so it is only accessible to Military personnel. It has all the groceries you need without ever leaving the naval base. One downside, it is closed on Mondays and is open on Sundays until 6pm, so if you need groceries, you will have to travel off base to the Walmart of Stop and Shop. They have lots of workers that will help you bring your groceries to your car, so you don’t have to lift a finger when exiting. They also have a sushi area, where a worker makes fresh sushi for you.
