Very good ice cream, on the sweet side. I like that they make their ice cream in house, and the overall funky vibe adds to the experience. This is similar to the old-school, intellectual coffee houses that used to pepper small prior to the domination of Starbucks. It’s got that hip vibe. The ice cream is better than some of the other creations, such as crepes, which are weak imitations of the real thing(check out Bonjour Creperie for the real stuff).

Charming ice cream shop in downtown Newtown. They have some really great ice cream with lots of space for families to kick back and relax. Good, clean bathrooms too! I love their limited edition seasonal offerings like egg nog, maple walnut and pumpkin pie. The deep dish apple pie from their regular offerings is also amazing. Oh yeah, free WiFi is a big plus! Love this place.

Overpriced, overpriced, overpriced. Supercute, but save your money. It is just regular ice cream served by kids at $ 4 for a cone.

Honestly not worth the money. It’s «cute». And that’s really the only difference between them and their less expensive competition

They have ice cream and nice people that work there. It’s ice cream and it’s awesome. The space itself is super cute in an adorable part of town(I copied this sentence from someone else’s review). But more importantly they have iced cream. I didn’t care for the chocolate covered come but that may be because I filled it with chocolate which may have downplayed the chocolate of the cone. Tldr; don’t get a chocolate dipped cone if you plan on getting chocolate ice cream

I didn’t want to drop my review rating for this place because I do like it here. The ice cream is delicious, as well as the Nutella lattes. However, my past few experiences with regular coffee have been bad. I tried to let it rebound before changing my review, but I just want to give people a heads up. Stick with specialties. I guess I’m just a little let down since I feel like regular coffee shouldn’t be that much of a science. Coffee is always either room temperature or cold. I don’t have it in me to bitch about it because they’re usually so busy. It doesn’t have much flavor either. My most recent visit, I ordered a coffee. They were out of creamer(all good), so I got almond milk. The coffee was barely warm and the almond milk was rancid. I gave up and threw it out. I can’t order coffee from this place anymore. The service is still really great though. I just know what their strong points are now.

Friendly owners, unique little shop. Our faves are the Nutella lattes, crepes and chocolate covered pretzels. And ice cream of course!

What is a zebra striped whale anyway? The name enough is reason to go inside and check it out. This dessert/coffee spot in Newtown, PA, is a favorite of my fiancé’s niece to finish off the evening after a night out on the town. As stuffed as I was from dinner and happy hour, the delicious selection of crepes served here is motivation for you to forget that and order up! I hate desserts that are overly sweet and heavy, but the banana/strawberry nutella crêpe was right on. Fluffy, light, and a good portion to share with one or two others. Five stars for the ambiance, its cozy, charming and designed to be a students ideal study area. Hey coffee, sweets and ice cream are all you need to stay motivated to concentrate on a subject you don’t want to! Couples, families, visitors, and students a like, should check this place out. A very cool treasure to find in this town!

Awesome ice cream here! We were staying at the Homewood Suites nearby on a family vacation, and I wanted to find a nice ice cream place to treat the family. I found The Zebra-Striped Whale and I’m glad that I did! I ordered the Jersey Shore ice cream(Vanilla ice cream with salted caramel stripes) in a waffle cone, my wife got the Cappuccino Crunch, and my daughter got the Chocolate Moose Trails. My son is allergic to milk, and fortunately, they had some sorbet flavors that we could choose from. He ended up getting Raspberry. All of the ice cream(and sorbet) were delicious. The Chocolate Moose Trails was probably the best flavor. One note of warning — these is a small step up in the entrance once you open the door. I didn’t notice and stubbed my toe pretty good.

The place is VERY cute, probably why I am giving it 4 stars. Its cozy and colorful and kids love it. They have great selection of pretty overpriced treats. The prices match evetrything else in Newtown so they are not shocking. The ice cream flavors are plentiful but not the best, in my opinion. Overly sweet, even according to my 5 year old son. The back room is adorable with lots of seating and books for kids. Again, my kids love it and I would definitely recommend.

I love the zebra stripped whale! It’s an adorable little ice cream shop situated right on main street in Newtown. The interior is very bright and colorful with lots of funky furniture and art. Basically the way it works is that you have a large selection of ice cream choices and then you can add basically any sort of topping you want. Then you can either have them put on top, or mixed into the ice cream. It is pretty much ice cream any way you want. The only reason why I did not give this place five stars is the ordering system. The employee who makes the orders for an entire group and then rings it up. It is a pretty inefficient system. One or two people should be making the orders and someone else working the register.

Super cute and original dessert spot in an adorable part of town. Crepes are amazing(we always get banana Nutella), ice cream is also delicious. Cute gifts as well! A must stop place in Newtown. :) Very friendly staff — helpful and welcoming.

What a great little ice cream and coffee shop in Newtown! I passed this place one day when I was headed to Starbucks and thought I would stop in and check it out. I was greeted immediately with a smile and a hello, and offered recommendations on the sundae they were offering(the Graham Slam Sundae). While I opted against the sundae, I went right for the Pumpkin Pie ice cream and was delighted by the intense, but magnificent and fresh flavor it had to offer. The café is clean and inviting, whimsical but comfortable, and a great place to take a few friends on a lunch break(when you are having ice cream for lunch!) I will definitely be a regular here, and am even impressed to hear that they offer gluten free, custom made cakes! Love this place! Keep up the great work!

I strayed from my usual wi-fi and coffee experience at Starbucks down the street to try ZSW. I was intrigued by the name and the sign and decided to check it out. I love how this business is family run since there are so few of them out there anymore and I was hoping to give it a five star review, I just was not able to make it happen. I found it to be expensive for what it was and a bit too obvious with cross selling the ZSW books and artwork by the artist. Although there is a lot of seating in the back it is kind of a hodge podge of mismatched furniture and most of it being uncomfortable. I read on their website that they are involved in community charity work and I think that is wonderful. I hope that ZSW succeeds and it seems to be popular enough that it will. I just don’t see myself putting this on my repeat customer list.

Very good ice cream in a cute ice cream shop. Décor is inviting and there is plenty of seating. I went with oreo ice cream which I liked a lot. You can order coffee and a bunch of other things as well. They accept credit cards and have free wifi!

I came here with friends on a boring summer night. We pulled up to the little street full of shops and the name of the place instantly sparked my interest. It was like walking into an old timey, homey, ice cream shop. Not only do they have ice cream here but they serve crepes and waffles. My friend and I split a Nutella and banana crêpe and I had a small(not actually so small) cup of the butter pecan. The Nutella and banana crêpe were pretty good and the butter pecan ice cream was excellent. The only problem I had was with the staff. Although the girl at the ice cream counter was very nice, the cashier wasn’t very friendly. Regardless it was a pretty good experience.

The staple of quaint downtown Newtown! A mom and pop Coldstone! Fun flavors and standard mix-in/toppings. Wish they had more fruity flavors/sorbets. There was not one! Deducting one star for that because I tend to go for sorbet options since they’re not as heavy. The kids sizes with toppings are $ 5. Perhaps on the more expensive side compared to froyo, but I couldn’t even finish my kids size! The staff is friendly and gives you huge samples. Lots of ambiance-y seating to catch up with friends.

Any place that has a Nutella Latte on the menu gets 5 stars in my book… thankfully everything else about ZSW is just a awesome! My beau and I came here a random Tuesday in search for a decent coffee place and probably put on a good 5 lbs thanks to their captivating menu. As soon as you walk in, the place is all earth tones, towers of chocolate covered pretzels, glossy kid’s books and friendly attendants behind the counter. We ordered a White Mocha Latte(deliciously piping hot white morsels that have melted into a liquid serum of love) and I decided to be adventurous and try the Nutella Latte. I gave the girl behind the counter some grief because I was suspicious it would be overkill nutella or too thick or just plain crappy… and boy was I wrong! This was like a thick hot chocolate/coffee mixed within layers of fluffy delicious nutella. I really could have left the place with just this coffee and would return for the rest of my days, but my fiancé had to go and sucker me into a Apple Pie a la mode crêpe. The crêpe was ginormous! We definitely should’ve never ordered it, much less at 9 pm, but since we are over 30 now, this is us living on the wild side. The crêpe was well made, lots of ice cream. The ambiance of the whole place is so friendly. Surrounded by art and fun furniture, it makes you want to sit here all day and get fat on nutella lattes and then work your debt off as a crêpe maker.

Zebra-Striped Whale, named after the children’s book of the same name and authored by the owner of this pleasant ice cream café, is an Alice in Wonderland place to disconnect from the outside world and kick back for a while. Sitting on State Street in Newtown Borough, it is a center of activity most warm evenings. It is necessary to make reservations for the bench out front — it is that popular. The ice cream is very good, and the coffee is too. The back of shop seating area is comfortable and eclectic; a great place for a small meeting like I had this afternoon. It is quiet on a weekday afternoon, and no one comes back to ask if you need anything else. Walk up to the front counter if you want a refill or another scoop. While ZSW is not my favorite ice cream emporium in Newtown’s creamy rich population of chill zones, it does possess the best options if you like to mix your SCREAM on cold marble with Reece Cups or Mason Mints. To my tongue, Goodnoe’s and OwWowCow taste better, but our Zebra is a whale of a place for the kids after dinner or weekends, and for us business folk during the day. Glad they are here and successful.
